This Week’s Featured Show

Saturday
April 23
Two Star Symphony
@ The Orange Show

There are a lot of good shows out there this week ( Peelander, Nat Baldwin,  Jessica Lea Mayfield, Omotai, Mydolls, Cactus stuff, and a lot more) but given the weather we’re having right now, why would anyone want to be indoors.  Soon it’s gonna be 90 degrees even at night. Plus, you’ll have skeeters buzzin’ you and getting all vampire on your ass.  So when we saw this happening at the Orange show we figured - perfect.  Two Star, maybe a few beers and hopefully a nice Texas breeze would go well right about now.

Jessica Lea Mayfield, David Mayfield @ Fitzgerald’s -Mayfield nice sense of melody and chill delivery should make for a really nice chill way to start your Easter weekend.

The Houston Sound Spring Concert Series, featuring Sauce @ Market Square Park (downtown; 6:30-8:30PM) -No explanation of what kind of sauce will be offered but we hope it’s not that crappy ketchup like sauce they serve at Chuey’s.

Hope: Benefiting the American Red Cross, featuring The Society of Bandits, A dream Asleep, Runaway Sun, & Lockehart @ Fitzgerald’s -Good bands, good cause, ’nuff said.

Mydolls, No Love Loss, The Biscuit Bombs, Zipperneck @ Rudyard’s - Classic Houston Punks Mydollslead the charge here along with Randy “Biscuit” Turner’s former backing band.

James Taylor @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion -Attention Olds.

Nat Baldwin, Hearts of Animals  @ Avant Garden - Dirty Projectors’ Nat Baldwin plays a mean cello and puts on a great show.

Family Force 5 @ Warehouse Live - YUCK!!!  This shit is so god awful that you can’t help but wonder if it is some meta joke.

Super Happy Fun Time Burlesque @ Super Happy Fun Land - I think the title speaks for itself.

Saturday, April 23

Something Fierce (3PM) Young Girls  (5PM)@ Cactus Music  - Two great bands you can see for free plus free beer!  Woo.

Tax the Wolf, Laura Eve, Cadence @ The Mink - TTW best band hair in Houston in my opinion and they are fun to catch live to boot.

Honky, Karma To Burn @ Rudyard’s -Jeff Pinkus makes the 3 hour drive down to Houston again.

William Fitzsimmons, Slow Runner @ Fitzgerald’s - Quite indie rock balladeer with a very very righteous beard.

Ricky Martin @ Toyota Center - OH MAN, Really?!!!  I mean really?

Umphrey’s McGee @ House of Blues -I’ve gotten a million e-mails from this band’s publicist.  I still find the music tedious and wanky in that frat boy prog way but, hey, I gotta reward that kind of tenacity.

Sunday April 24

Sleigh Bells, CSS, Bosco Delrey @ Warehouse Live -Brooklyn electronic duo Sleigh Bells are fun upbeat stuff with that we “mix everything in the red” aesthetic.

They Who Sound @ Avant Garden - No word as to what experimental/jazz/improv musicians will be playing this week but, as always, it’s worthwhile to drop-in on.

Monday, April 25

Ron Pope & AriHerstad, Zach Berkman @ Fitzgerald’s -You know when you hear a singer trying too hard?  Umm, yeah, that’s kind of my reaction here but, ya know, some people dig that sound.  What ever floats your boat, man.

Tuesday, April 26

George Thorogood & the Destroyers, Jim Suhler and Monkey Beat @ House of Blues -Don’t hate Thorogood plays a mean slide.

Johnny Falstaff @ Fitzgerald’s -Get your honkey-tonk on brothas and sistas.

Tony Bennett @ Jones Hall -Smooooove man. That Bennett is smoove.

Wednesday, April 27

Peelander-Z, Anamanaguchi @ Fitzgerald’s -Crazy ass Japanese dudes and that band that plays music that sounds like the music you heard on the old Sega system (but with guitars and drums).

Robert Ellis & The Boys @ Fitzgerald’s - If the stuff upstairs is too crazy then Robert will treat you right.

As always proper respects goes to Space City Rock whose calendar is always my jump off for this weekly piece.
