Houston’s Very Own Time Capsule: The Astrodome

Panorama 2

By: Jacob Calle Photos: Richard  Ramirez There has been many rumors floating around about what will become of the Astrodome. Once such rumor mentions the Astrodome becoming an exotic animal hunting lease. This glorious building with its Empyrean dome is considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World and, for some, is considered as awe-inspiring as The Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, The Great Pyramid of Giza, and The Great Sphinx.  So why do we even have to raise the question of whether or not this brilliant structure should be destroyed? While there doesn’t seem to be a definitive ... Read More »

Sports Brief

houston dynamo

Wow! What a week in sports as the
Houston Dynamo started their season with a home opening win last
Saturday against DC United. Houston went ahead in the 80th minute when
Houston’s Brad Davis shot a corner kick toward the penalty area where
Houston’s Ricardo Clark and DC United James Riley were battling for
the ball.  Riley headed the ball accidentally in the wrong direction
into his own goal giving Houston a 1-0 lead. Ricardo Clark came back
and scored again for Houston in the 89th minute when he received a
pass from substitute Warren Creavalle making it 2-0. That’s how ... Read More »

By Monday, the superstars that were in town, the limos driving them, the private parties that millions were spent on, will be gone. NBA Cares left a lasting impact of millions donated to the local community organizations. While the players are known for making millions, and for getting in trouble off the court, some also give back to ... Read More »

Sports Brief: First Annual International Rugby Board’s Women’s Sevens World Series

GE DIGITAL CAMERA

Rugby makes a return to Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium, this time for the second stop of the first annual International Rugby Board’s Women’s Sevens World Series. This series hits four global destinations: UAE (Dubai), USA (Houston), China (Guangzhou), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam). The inclusion of rugby sevens in the Olympics in Rio in 2016 adds national interest in the sport. Rugby sevens is similar to the traditional 15 side rugby, but is played with seven players rather than 15, each playing seven minute halves. These numbers can lead to some exciting rugby, which is exactly what we got here in Houston ... Read More »

USA vs. Canada, International Soccer Came to H-Town.

BBVA

By Maxwell Morgan The US Men’s Soccer team came to H-Town Tuesday to kick off their centennial celebrations at BBVA Compass Stadium (home of the Dynamo and newest soccer specific stadium in the US). They played an international friendly against our northern neighbors, Canada, to get a warm up for those not currently playing overseas before they head to Honduras next week to undertake World Cup Qualifying. Unfortunately for the 11,737 people in attendance, it was an atrocious game with very little action in and around the goals, as the game played out to a 0-0 draw. So I suppose ... Read More »

2010-houston-marathon

By: Rad Rich Hello– here’s another week in sports with a lot going on. In Major League Soccer news, yesterday was the start of training camp for the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo are looking to get everybody on the same page since being one game away from winning last year’s MLS Cup against the LA Galaxy. This year brings lots of hurdles, as there is World Cup Qualifying, the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer, and the CONCACAF Champions League play. During the off season, the Dynamo were able to keep most of the players intact. During the 2013 MLS Super Draft, ... Read More »

Houston, We Have A Schaublem.

Thugga live tweeting

By Maxwell Morgan The Texans most successful season in franchise history came to a close Sunday, as the New England Patriots defeated the Texans 41-28 in the Divisional Round of the playoffs at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. For any NFL fan, losing in the playoffs is devastating. All Superbowl hopes and dreams are crushed in a single afternoon or evening. Oh how Texans fans wanted to crush Tom Brady and the Pats, but through missed opportunities and poor quarterback play there was no crushing to be had. Which leads to the most important question; How do the Texans improve ... Read More »
