Wow! What a week in sports as the Houston Dynamo started their season with a home opening win last Saturday against DC United. Houston went ahead in the 80th minute when Houston’s Brad Davis shot a corner kick toward the penalty area where Houston’s Ricardo Clark and DC United James Riley were battling for the ball. Riley headed the ball accidentally in the wrong direction into his own goal giving Houston a 1-0 lead. Rad Rich’s All-Star Weekend Report Back
The pomp and extravagance of the National Basketball Associations’ All-Star Weekend ended Sunday night. The Western Conference beat the Eastern Conference 143 to 138. Chris Paul Of the LA Clippers was named the Most Valuable Player with 20 points and 15 assists. By Monday, the superstars that were in town, the limos driving them, the private parties that millions were spent on, will be gone. Sports Brief: Soccer and Rugby; NBA All-Star Weekend Coming Up
Here’s a quick Sports Brief: In soccer news, the Houston Dynamo will have their fan-fest as they march to the start of their 2013 season this Saturday, March 2. The event will be held at the BBVA Compass Stadium, located on the east side of downtown Houston, from 12-4pm. Thirteen of the Dynamo Players and the Dynamo girls will be present, and the 2012 and 2013 Eastern Conference trophies will be on hand for fans to get autographs and take pictures. Sports Brief: First Annual International Rugby Board’s Women’s Sevens World Series
Rugby makes a return to Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium, this time for the second stop of the first annual International Rugby Board’s Women’s Sevens World Series. This series hits four global destinations: UAE (Dubai), USA (Houston), China (Guangzhou), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam). The inclusion of rugby sevens in the Olympics in Rio in 2016 adds national interest in the sport. Rugby sevens is similar to the traditional 15 side rugby, but is played with seven players rather than 15, each playing seven minute halves. USA vs. Canada, International Soccer Came to H-Town.
By Maxwell Morgan The US Men’s Soccer team came to H-Town Tuesday to kick off their centennial celebrations at BBVA Compass Stadium (home of the Dynamo and newest soccer specific stadium in the US). They played an international friendly against our northern neighbors, Canada, to get a warm up for those not currently playing overseas before they head to Honduras next week to undertake World Cup Qualifying. It’s a New Year and there is a lot going on in sports in and around the Houston area. In the National Football League, the Houston Texans are getting ready for their big playoff game after their 19-13 win at home last weekend. They now go to New England and play the Patriots and the cold. The last time the Texans were there they suffered a devastating loss at 14-42.
