The Water Tastes Weird, It’s Not Just You

No, it’s not just you. Water in The Heights, north side, Memorial Park and La Porte has been tasting weird lately. People are calling it “grassy,” “mildewy,” and generally “gross.”

Turns out it’s not just your imagination or that suspiciously rusty tap in your new apartment. We reached out to the city’s Public Works and Engineering Department and got this statement:

“The City of Houston Public Works & Engineering Department is aware of a number of reports regarding taste or odor change in our drinking water,” the release said.

“PWE water quality professionals have concluded that the change is attributable to increased levels of a naturally-occurring compound in our upstream water supplies which is known to cause earthy or musty tastes and odors.”

Nothing to worry about, according to the city. It says Houston’s water is still safe to consume by federal and state standards. The city is also looking at treatment options and monitoring the water supply.

Basically, Public Works & Engineering is keeping track of the water and says it’s still safe to drink, earthy taste or not.

We’ve reached out to the city for clarification and further details and will update if we hear back.
