This week in Houston brings in a number of unique events and opening receptions, including an exhibition by Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter at Project Row Houses and three new exhibitions at Art League Houston.

Jade Collins, “Trever”

Poetry Slam + Catalogue Release Party at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

From 6:30 to 7:30 pm, the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (5216 Montrose) is hosting the release of the catalogue for the museum’s current show Origins of the Self, a group exhibition featuring work by teen artists from the Houston-area that focuses on questions of personal identity. The event will also serve as the backdrop for young poets to read

Opening Reception — Prince Varughese Thomas: The Space Between Grief and Morning at Art League Houston

From 6 to 9 pm, Art League Houston (1953 Montrose) presents the opening reception for an exhibition by Houston-based artist Prince Varughese Thomas, The Space Between Grief and Morning. The exhibition explores the process of personal and communal grief and mourning through a series of interdisciplinary works, combining drawing, video and photography. The exhibition will be on view in the main gallery through May 6.

 

Opening Reception — How Do I Say Her Name? at Art League Houston

From 6 to 9 pm, Art League Houston presents the opening reception for How Do I Say Her Name?, a group exhibition organized by Houston-based artist Ann Johnson. The exhibition features multidisciplinary work by nine female artists of color, including Regina Agu, Rabéa Ballin, Ann Johnson, Lauren Kelley, Rosine Kouamen, Autumn Knight, Lovie Olivia, Kaneem Smith, and Monica Villarreal. The works are made in response to the violence committed against women of color and are indicative of the broader demand of social justice. The exhibition will be on view in the front gallery through May 6.

 

J. Pouwels, “Dysfunctional Systems 014”

Opening Reception — J. Pouwels: Dysfunctional Systems at Art League Houston

From 6 to 9 pm, Art League Houston presents the opening reception for an exhibition by New Zealand-born and California-based artist J. Pouwels, Dysfunctional Systems. The exhibition explores the issues related to water resource mismanagement in the artist’s home of Chico, considered one of the agricultural heartlands of California. The exhibition will be on view in the hallway space through May 6.

Conversation — Robert Proctor at Galveston Arts Center

At 2 pm, join the Galveston Arts Center (2127 Strand) for a conversation with art conservator Robert Proctor as part of their ongoing series Conversations @ The Center. As the co-owner of Whitten and Proctor Fine Art Conservation company in Houston, he will discuss the intersection of art, science and technology.

 

Round 46 Opening + Community Market at Project Row Houses

From 4 to 7 pm, Project Row Houses (2521 Holman) hosts the opening reception and market for Round 46 of their exhibition series. The seven artists houses will feature a collection of objects, ephemera, performance, digital and installation works by the women of Black Women Artists for Black Lives Matter, a collective of Black women, queer and gender non-conforming artists who stand in solidarity with the movement. The exhibition will be on view through June 4.

 

Opening Reception — Fetish at Rudolph Blume Fine Art | Artscan Gallery

From 6 to 8 pm, Rudolph Blume Fine Art | Artscan Gallery (1836 Richmond) will host the opening reception for the group exhibition Fetish. Featuring work by Les Christensen, Jo Ann Fleischhauer, Joe Mancuso, Mari Omori, John Runnels and John Salvest, the exhibition explores the transition from an ordinary object to a complex work of art through the obsessive or repetitive work of the artist.

 

Opening Reception — 4 Seasoned at Winter Street Studios

From 6:30 to 10 pm, Winter Street Studios (2101 Winter) will host the opening reception for 4 Seasoned, a group exhibition featuring works by Ron Gordon, Alan Roedwald, Page Piland and Albert Goldreich. The exhibition will include contemporary abstracts, surrealism, realism, fine art ceramics and glass work and also features a closing reception on Monday, March 27 from 6 to 9 pm.
