Robert Ellis
The Energy

Fat Tony
& Courier
@ Fitzgerald’s

Bernard James Freeman is a professor at Rice University but don’t let that fool you . Freeman also known as Bun B was half of the trillest shit to have ever come out of Port Arthur, Texas - UGK. Sure, it’s been years since the late great Pimp C left this world for the next but the duo’s impact is felt no less along the Gulf Coast and the rest of Rapdom and Bun B’s skills behind the mic are no less sharp and witty. That alone should be good enough to perk your ears but hell look at the rest of the line up! I mean not to toot our own horn but Grandfather Child, Propain, Rocky Moon, Giant Princess, B L A C K I E, Robert Ellis, The Energy, Simple Success, Thundercunt, Fat Tony, and Courier? I mean really do we know how to throw an anniversary party or what?

Now for the rest of your week

Thursday 27 January

Peter Wolf Crier, Retribution Gospel Choir @ Fitzgerald’s -Minneapolis low-fi indie-pop guitar and drum duo keep it simple, melodic, and pretty.

Art + Music + Zine Party, featuring ms. Sandy & ms. YET, Stephanie Saint Sanchez, Another Run, GoREALah Soul, Ceeplus Bad Knives, & more @ Khon’s (2808 Milam; 6:30-9:30PM) - Weird Weeds guitarist Sandy Ewen pairs off with dancer Yet Torres to lead a night of art, music, and writing.

Friday 28 January

Fired For Walking, Side Arms, Bright Men of Learning @ Fitzgerald’s -Bright Men of Learning’s Fired was a pretty sweet 12” of awesomeness last year. Catch them as they open for the Post-Sharks&Sailors band Side Arms and scene stalwarts Fired For Walking.

Freedom of Movement, featuring Free Radicals, Cypher, Havikoro, Kalunga N’Golo, & more @ Fitzgerald’s -Break dancing meets the funky Free Radicals

Asylum!, featuring Provision, Art Institute, Ceeplus Bad Knives, Mr. Castillo, & Jeffrey Thames The King of Grief @ The Mink -“an Industrial, Synth Wave, Mutant Disco,Post Punk, Robot Bass Party! “ OK works for me.

The Happen-Ins, The Preservation, Picture Book @ The Continental Club - The Happen-ins do classic R&B with an Americana bent while Picture Book’s does the 60’s rock tribute in a manner that seems effortless. Good stuff.

Young Empires, OK Sweetheart, The Manichean @ Groundhall The Manichean just released a remix album which is appropriate given the electronic pop of Canada’s Young Empires.

The Ballistics, No Resistance, Roots of Exile, All At Sea @ The White Swan - 1-2 1-2 Oi Oi Oi! Punk it up with the Ballistics on Friday!

D.R.E.A.M. , Will Schorre, Ben & Ciaran @ Super Happy Fun Land -If you dream of drums this may be a show for you.

Blaggards @ Brian O’Neill’s - Drink it up with Houston’s finest Irish Rock band.

The Escatones, Jimmy Lee Deen @ Last Concert Cafe -60’s jangly band the Escatones are supposed to do a split with Galveston’s Darwin’s Finches soon. Should be interesting.

Lisa Morales (CD release) @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - ½ of the renowned formerly Houston based Sister Morales, Lisa celebrates the release of her new solo album.

Paul Geremia @ Anderson Fair -Finger-pickin’ folkie from Rhode Island whose been at it since before you were born.

A Thousand Cranes, Thou Shall Not Kill…Except, Dead Roses, The Lady Jung/Julia Wallace @ The Mink - Weird, Etherial, Surreal, Good to smoke a bowl to. those are all things that would describe why A Thousand Cranes is worth your attention.

Carolyn Wonderland, Super Pancho Combo @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar -Former Houstonian Carolyn Wonderland is still singing the blues in Austin, TX.

Nameless Sound, featuring Dennis Gonzalez Yells at Eels @ Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex (6PM) -Founder of the Dallas Association for Avant-Garde and Neo Impressionistic Music, Gonzalez’s Trumpet is a must for Houston fans who haven’t heard him perform in this city in over a decade

Elder Gods, H.R.A., Cronophage, Nemontemi @ Walter’s - Metal!!!

Lisa Morales @ Cactus Music (3PM) - If you missed her on Friday here is your second chance.

Rockin’ Lloyd Tripp @ The Continental Club - Rockabilly it up fools.

Ethan Bortnick @ Stude Concert Hall - You know the really crappy middling Saturday night pandering-to-old-people-with-deep-pockets programming that local PBS affiliate KUHT drags out every week.  ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz-5HHaMWwg ) Well now you can experience that brain cell killing experience at Rice University’s Shepherd School of music and add in the weirdo carny element a child prodigy ( the bourgeois parenting equivalent of child beauty pageants ).  Yeah it’s creepy and wrong and you know it.  If you go to this I will never speak to you again.

Sunday 30 January

Sick Of It All, Bitter End, Outbreak, Alpha & Omega, Will to Live @ Walter’s - Not dead yet old school New York punkers from the 80’s hit up Walter’s.

Fishnet Stalkers, Flash Boys, Wrong Ones, bator @ Rudyard’s - By the numbers punky glammy barroom rock and roll.

Rodney Crowell @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (Sun. and Mon., January 30-31 ) - Grammy winning Houston based singer songwriter seems to have been around for ever and worked with people as diverse as Rosanne cash, Bob Seger, and Booker T.  He sits in for two night at the Mucky Duck.

Monday 31 January

The Black Dragon Cirkus, Icarius The Owl, Lights Out Dancing, This Years Fashion @ Super Happy Fun Land- I can’t find any info on Black Dragon Cirkus but the rest of the bands sound like the kind of teen rock you’d hear on Nickelodeon on any given day.  if you like that kind of thing this may be your show.

Glover Gill Tango @ The Continental Club - For those who care for something a bit more South American for your Monday.

Tuesday 01 February

Cradle of Filth, Nachtmystium, Turisas, Daniel Lioneye @ Warehouse Live- This year Marks COF’s 20th year of Black Metal.

Idiginis @ Fitzgerald’s - Or how about some Reggae for your Tuesday night.

Wednesday 02 February

Robert Ellis & The Boys @ Fitzgerald’s - Oh so good with a Lone Star or a Shiner!

The Umbrella Man @ The Continental Club -Nick Gaitan is kind of an institution and his stints at the Continental are, like Robert Ellis shows at Fitz, a must for any Houstonian.
