Show of the Week:

Daniel Johnston’s 50th Birthday Bash:

Friday 14 Janaury - Daniel Johnston, Spain Colored Orange, Roky Moon & BOLT, The Mathletes, The Bright Light Social Hour, Tax the Wolf, Electric Attitude ,The Examples ,Ceeplus Badknives , Fredster @ Fitzgerald’s

I was recently on a huge Daniel Johnston kick where, for no apparent reason, I just started playing his albums on shuffle on my MP3 player.  Well, what better way to close out my month of D.J. than a huge celebration of the Texas legend as he turns 50.  Aside from Johnston himself, he’ll be joined by some of Houston’s finest - Spain Colored Orange will do their horny bouncy pop, Roky Moon and Bolt will get all glam, The Mathletes will do that Joe Mathlete thing, Tax The Wolf…well, you get the picture:  a lot of solid bands, a brilliant songwriter, and what I predict will be a packed house.  Should be fun!

Thursday 13 January

Girl Talk @ Verizon Wireless Theater -Who said engineers are square?   Former biomedical engineer Gregg Michael Gillis has been mashing up dance floors with style for nearly a decade.  If you missed it on Wednesday, here is a link to Jacob Calle’s interrogation .

Espantapajaros, The Keypers @ Fitzgerald’s- Argentinean transplant Pablo Espantapajaros bring his Rock Classico En Español to Fitz.

Scared To Dance, featuring Mr. Castillo & Hit It or Quit It @ The Mink - Indie, Post Punk, New Wave, Glam …  that’s the kind of shit Mr. Castillo plays.

The Hightailers, Leslie Newman @ Last Concert Cafe - Oh damn, now you can finally make good use of that tie-dye shirt you found for a buck at Fiesta.

Cornmeal @ Fitzgerald’s - Chicago folk-bluegrass-Americana bring it with  banjo, violin, and the requisite foot stompin’.

Friday 14 January

Come See My Dead Person, Hilary Sloan ,Sara Van Buskirk @ Warehouse Live (Studio) -Texas City’s favorite sons are irresistible on stage.  Think high energy drunken sea shanties.

Venomus Maximus * Gypsyhawk * Green and Wood @ Rudyard’s -Venemous Maximus is hot off the heels of their Cutthroat Records 7″ release and will be hitting Rudz’s with their brand of crunchy chimpy rock.  Also, I’ll be doing an interview of Venemous  Maximus for February’s print issue.

Picturebook plays The Who @ The Continental Club (Free 7:30-9:30) - To call Chase Hamblin’s band Picturebook a mere cover band doesn’t do them justice.    Check them out at happy hour at the Continental and find out why as they take on The Who.

Saturday 15 January

Girls Rock Camp Houston Benefit, featuring Vivian Pikkles and the Sweethearts Über Alles, No Love Less, & more @ Unitatian Fellowship of Houston (1504 Wirt)- If you want to help put the sausage fest currently apprearing on Houston’s stages in check then give Girls Rock Camp your damn money!  The bands should be fun too. Super-group Vivian Pickles in particular should be a blast as it features members from Gtrs, Something Fierce, and The Busy Kids

Paris Falls (CD release), A.P. Dugas & The Religion (final show!), Young Girls ,DJ Psychedelic Sex Panther @ Fitzgerald’s- Damn but Paris Falls has to be one of Houston’s most prolific bands.  Love that keyboard sound.  Also, Dugas and the Religion’s last show?  Say it ain’t so!

The Suspects, Murder The Stout, Channel One @ The Continental Club - The Suspects they break up, they reunite.  I guess you can’t stop the Ska.

Born Liars @ Big Star Bar (free!) - Rock and Roll, Big Star, and I’m sure a whole lot of you know what!

Fat Tony, Simple Success @ The Flat - What can I say man, Fat Tony puts on one of the best, smartest, and flat-out fun rap shows you will see in this town.

Andy Bell (ex-Erasure), Alex C @ Numbers- Oh damn, talk about your wayback machine!  It’s 1/2 of Erasure at Numbers!  Someone get the Wippets!

The Dollyrockers * Automatic Thrill @ Rudyard’s- Rockabilly fans rejoice, tonight you can pair that Rudzburger and Lone Star with Dollyrockers.

Sunday 16 January

Too $hort, Devin the Dude, DJ Kid Capri @ House of Blues - Get out your finest herb folks! Honestly, if the Daniel Johnston show wasn’t happening, I’d have put this on the top of the list.  As a guy who really doesn’t like the HOB as a venue, that’s sayin’ a  lot.

Perfect Future, Sleep Bellum Sonno, Diving, football etc. @ Vinyl Junkie - Football Etc. has  a six-string bass! Awesome!

Binarium Sound Series, featuring Binary Sound Machine, brightbluebeetle (with Dug Falk), D.smith, S.ewen, D.dove, Bryerton @ The Mekong Underground (2808 Milam; 8-10PM) - I love these shows.  Lost of cool improv, Jazz, experimental music and Kohn’s is a wonderful place to take a break between sets.

HYPE!, featuring GRRRL Parts, DJ Hyro, Fredster, Panchitron, & Dr. Mudd Butt @ The Mink- DJ’s at The Mink, you get the idea.

Tuesday 18 January

Ozzy Osbourne, Slash @ Toyota Center -  My band skipped rehearsal for the Ozz.

The Murdocks, Sleeping in the Aviary, Alkari @ Jet Lounge - I was just thinking about what ever happened to SITA.  Great band with good tunes.  I’ll have to sniff around and see if they have a new release.

Miss Leslie, Mike Stinson @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) -I’ve been meaning to go to the Dosey Doe, and I can’t think of a better excuse to go than getting a Honky Tonk ass whoopin’ from Miss Leslie.
