This Week’s Featured Show

Saturday, May 5
The Wild Moccasins (tour kickoff)
@ Fitzgerald’s

OK, OK I am a shitty typist!  I know that so let me apologize for Wild Moccasins being spelled as “Wild Moccains” in the title of this week’s interview (link) until it was pointed out (kudos to Adrienne M. Owen for the correction).

My bad typing and copy editing laziness aside, the Wild Moccasins are one of Houston’s best and brightest so why the hell would one of their tour Kick-Offs not be featured.  The thing is this band continues to charm and engage us even after all these years. If the new single they are showing off this week (“Gag Reflections”) is any indication, the band’s first album of new material on New West should prove to be a killer collection and I myself can’t wait for that album to drop.  From Zahira Gutierrez’s sweet and sunny voice to Peter Lee’s shimmering melodic guitar lines, the song is another perfectly crafted slice of bright, giddy indie pop that is as joyous as a summer drive down to the beach.  But don’t take my word for it, head down to Fitz and see for yourself.  The band puts on a great show and I guarantee, you won’t be disappointed.

La Catrin, Gin Martini, Glasnost, Tangled Shadows, Max Xanadu @ Numbers - One woman dance music party .

Gipsy Kings @ Bayou Music Center (formerly Verizon Wireless Theater) - I bought a Spanish classical guitar last year.  It’s a pretty fuckin’ sweet sound.  Sadly my guitar skills aren’t even close to what these cats do.

Todd Snider, Kevin Kinney @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Oh sure,I know singer songwriter Snider is all big on his more adult work but sorry dude you do a guest spot on Farmer Jason’s album  and sing about a moose on the loose and I’m all hell yeayussss!

Grupo Fantasma, Patricia Vonne @ Discovery Green - Latin Funk from Austin

Milkdrive @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Austin folkies return to the duck.  Man their name bugs me.. I have no idea why.

YouTube Preview Image

Social Distortion, Riverboat Gamblers, Lindi Ortega @ House of Blues - Old School punkers keeping that flame lit.

Poor Pilate, Tiziano Dominico, Tyagaraja (solo) @ Rudyard’s - Poor Pilate plays some lovely piano and guitar driven rock.  Kind of at times reminds me of the Delta Spirit.

Chamillionaire, Z-Ro, Paul Wall, The Niceguys @ Warehouse Live - Kiss has their army Chamillionaire has the Chamilitary.  Together they could take over the world!

Jesse Dayton, Mike Stinson, Picture Book @ The Continental Club - The Hillbilly Zombie king

Blood On the Dance Floor, Brokencyde, Hayley Rose, New Years Day, The Bunny The Bear, William Control, Polkadot Cadavor, Deuce @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Wow umm wow.  Ever just click on a band’s website and just do the whole slap your hand on your forehead in disbelief?  Florida, J’Accuse!!!

The Knux @ House of Blues - Every Hip-hopper needs a good nickname, right?  Well, Kentrell Lindsey goes by the nickname “Krispy.” OK, simple but not bad.  His brother Alvin’s nickname? “Joey!”

Sister Crayon @ Fitzgerald’s (free!) - Sacramento electroniky band

Susan Gibson @ Heights Live! - Pleasant enough Wimberly, TX singer-songwriter

Kailash Kher @ Arena Theater - Indian Pop singer who’s sung in over 200 Bollywood films and in enough languages to make you feel like the lazy bum you are.

Bowling For Soup, Patten Pending, Freshmen 15, Junior Doctor, Sandlot Heroes @ Fitzgerald’s - Wow, I’d always blamed Canada for this innocuous band but it turns out they are from Texas.  Go figure.

Erick Morillo @ Stereo Live - Columbian DJ

Saturday, May 5

Hot 95.7 Cinco De Mayo Bomb, featuring T-Pain & Neon Hitch @ House of Blues - The King of the Auto-Tune?  I think we have our Cinco De Mayo winner right here!

Active Child, Balam Acab, Superhumanoids @ Fitzgerald’s - Electronic Musician Pat Grossi’s Active Child is pretty good but I think it’s best when he’s in shoegaze-o-rama mode. Just sayin’

Los Skarnales @ The Continental Club - Cinco De Ska, Yo!

The Bad Plus @ Da Camera (1427 Branard) - You are a Jazz trio that’s reworked Iron Man and Smells Like Teen Spirit…Hey let’s do Stravinsky’s Rites of Spring,  I mean why the fuck not?!

Casting Crowns, Matthew West, Royal Tailor, Lindsay McCaul @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - Jesus Rock

Hod, Vore, Blaspherian, Spectral Manifest, H.R.A. @ The 19th Hole (The Woodlands) - In case you were wondering, the name Hod is not from the Kabbalah as I thought, but from the English version of the Norse god Höðr.  Now, don’t get me wrong Norse mythology is a pretty Metal source for a band name but a dude who shoots mistletoe arrows?  Mistletoe?!!  Just not a very metal material for a weapon.

Sunday, May 6

Hanni El Khatib, Sundelles @ Fitzgerald’s - Avid skateboarder and a solid bluesy garage rocker.

Hoodie Allen @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) - Certified Kosher Hip Hop from New York

Monday, May 7

Nick Lowe, The Autumn Defense @ The Continental Club - The Jesus of Cool is back!.

They, Who Sound featuring Marco Donnarumma and Selcoe/Cisneros/Dove/Smith @ Avant Garden - This week Birmingham, England’s Marco Donnarumma play the Xth Sense which is described as “biophysical, wearable technology for music performance.” OK that sounds pretty canned and sterile. It’s much cooler than that so here is a video to give you an idea of what it is…

Enter Shikari, At the Skylines, Letlive @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Meh, Buzz Band.

Tuesday, May 8

Ruben Studdard @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - R&B at the Dosey Doe?  Go figure.

Wednesday, May 9

Jane’s Addiction @ Bayou Music Center (formerly Verizon Wireless Theater) - Nothing’s shocking was a classic but honestly I never got into the rest of this band’s catalog.  I guess it’s nice to see them still kicking around.

Electric Guest @ Fitzgerald’s - If you hate guys singing falsetto with heavy dosed up indie pop and soul, this is not going to be your thing but I for one think this LA duo  knocks it out of the ball park.  Of course, having Danger Mouse behind the controls of your album can’t hurt.

Anders Osborne @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - Dude, you’re a singer songwriter that came all the way from Sweden, how can we not give you a mention.
