A lot of people bitch about SXSW and are really cynical about it but I myself am a fan; personally I’ve had some great life-changing moments because of it and, in a broader less personal sense, both Houston and the state reap a lot of benefits from the event so kudos to the organizers.  One benefit we reap here in Houston is the spill-over shows and no place does it up as crazy as Super Happy Funland.   I mean look at that list!  Did you get all that?  That’s just the first week!!!  So, much appreciation to SXSW and some kudos to the people at SHFL for bringing some of these acts here.

Thursday, March 8

Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash @ The Continental Club - California alt-country band who actually got the OK from Johnny himself to use his name.

Earth, Wind and Fire @ Jones Hall - OK what instrument created by Phil Cohran was used by both Sun Ra and EWF?  If you guessed the Space Harp.  You win a no-prize.

Friday, March 9

ZenHill Night, featuring Roky Moon & BOLT!, Sideshow Tramps, The Wheel Workers, Winter Wallace, Craig Kinsey Band, & Southern Backtones @ Fitzgerald’s - It’s a ZenHill Hootenanny

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic @ House of Blues -Funkadelic AND Earth Wind and Fire in the same week? Damn that is funky!

Jack Topht, Fucks, PAPAYA, B L A C K I E @ Notsuoh (9PM; $3) -Silly tongue-in-cheek Low-fi dude from Buffalo (with the always good Papaya and B L A C K I E)

Crizzly, Kids at the Bar, Ghosteffects @ Fitzgerald’s -
Apparently Crizzly has some good weed because why else would you post ten minuted of Patrick Star doing this on your blog?

California Guitar Trio @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck -Three guys, three acoustic guitars, and they do a mean version of Bohemian Rhapsody

Fri. - Mon. March 9 - 12 - South By Due East @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar.  Marlo Blue & Guy Schwartz annual showcase.  Details can be found at http://www.southbydueeast.com/

Fri.-Sun., March 9-11 – Bowfire @ Jones Hall -I love bowed instruments which is why I will avoid this horrible dumbed-down pandering roadshow of PBS Saturday Night fundraiser fare like the plague.  No, really, check out their webpage -  it’s really jaw-dropping awful.. I’d rather watch Patrick Star deedle for another hour.

Saturday, March 10

Art Institute, Bright Men of Learning, Jealous Creatures, A Sundae Drive, Ornery Little Darlings, Flying Cars @ Vinyl Junkie (4202 Canal; 3-10PM, $5) -BMOL will soon be no more as their glorious leader goes the way of Kim Jong Il….Oh wait…sorry King Jon Il died…Marhsall Preddy is just moving to Austin.

They will be performing with Black Rock family band, Kool & Together, also founded in 1970.”  (This description comes from LuckE.Dog.  I erroneously identified a different band with the same name as playing.  Thanks, man. )

Bobby Womack @ Arena Theater - Old school R&B fellow

Heart, Erick Baker @ House of Blues - The Wilson sisters and the HOB.

Imagination Movers @ Verizon Wireless Theater - If you are going to this show you either are a parent, a kid, or are on some really really bad drugs.

The Apache Relay, Aunt Martha @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) - Umm yeah, OK got it.  You guys like to post videos on your website where you talk about yourselves.  Less talk boys, more rock.

Built To Spill, Lucero, Dinosaur Feathers @ Fitzgerald’s - Man I love me some Built To Spill.

Heart, Erick Baker @ House of Blues - Dang, the Seattle girls are playing two shows. Go Girls!

Titus Andronicus, Screaming Females, Diarrhea Planet @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - First off, they are named after a Shakespeare play with some damn good gratuitous violence and second they did a whole album with a civil war theme.  Good enough for me!

Black Flamingo, Courtesy Tier, DJ Dave Wrangler @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - Kinda psych pop band

White Rabbits, The War On Drugs @ Fitzgerald’s -Dancy indie pop from New York via Missouri

Burning Itch, White Crime, Ritz Riot, Yearning Bitch @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - Low fi punks from Tennessee

Kaiser Chiefs @ House of Blues -Long standing British Post Punkers

Lights, Ambassadors @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Candian electronic musician Lights Valerie Poxleitner if you want to be more exact.

Talking to Turtles, Adam Arcuragi @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) -I’m kind of confused here as the band’s website doesn’t mention these dates so I’ll mention it just so you can be as confused at I am.  By the way it’s nice folky and baraque indie pop.

    Done, Thanks for the update.

  • Ramon LP4 says:

Whoops, wrong relatives then. I saw the website for the band you mentioned but I didn’t see any tour dates on this website http://heavylightrecords.com/the-relatives/ so I assumed that band was no more.

I’ll update accordingly and steal your description.

Thanks, deciphering bands with generic names can be tricky sometimes any help in clearing that up is always appreciated.

  • Lucke.E.Dog says:

Thanks for being quick on the draw!
