This Week’s Featured Show

The return of Lance Higdon!

They, Who Sound
@ Avant Garden

Monday, June 13
David Dove, Alauna Rubin

Sandy Ewen, George Heathco,
Lance Higdon, Damon Smith

Don’t get me wrong, the first set with David Dove on trombone and Alauna Rubin on voice and clarinet is pretty cool but the second set will be an extra treat because it will feature Houston Ex-pat (now Atlantean) Lance Higdon on drums. Higdon was one of Houston’s most exciting and challenging drummers and if you had a chance to see him play in Tamerbersauro, Lance In The Pants, or a myriad of other projects, you know how much fun it was to see him in action. Monday night he’ll be joined by Sandy Ewen on guitar, George Heathco on guitar, and Damon Smith on bass. Let me give you an example of some of his work.

OK, now for the rest of the week.

Thursday, June 9

Twin Sister, Young Mammals @ Fitzgerald’s - Long Island’s Twin Sister runs the chilled out gamut from spacey atmospheres to some groovy disco beats so I’ll let you figure out what recreationals you should bring.  Plus Young Mammals - Woop!

Houston Hip-Hop Music Fest 2, featuring Dante “H.I.G.” Higgins, B New, Dice, OverDose, UnderGravity, Doughbeezy, Tawn P, Authentic Snoopy, Pook P, Coyo, KAB Tha Don, Young Scotty, Eskabel, O.N.E., Seano, & Yung Truth @ Midtown Lounge - I’m just gonna say that Pook is an awesome name.

2011 Swishahouse Reunion Concert, featuring Slim Thug, Lil Keke, Mike Watts, JDawg, Lil Flip, & DJ Michael Watts @ House of Blues - OH damn!  This may be worth those f*&@ing $8 Lone Stars!

Titan’s Eve, Legion, Kleos, Witness To The Fallen, Soul Skard @ The White Swan - OH Hell Yes!  Titan’s Eve - Fuckin’ Vancouver Metal Representing!

The Bassturd, Rival Wife, Joe Jack Talcum, The Killafornianz @ Super Happy Fun Land - What is Bassturd? I’ll let Iowa Public Radio’s John Premble explain, “a LoFi style [that] uses simple synths & accordions to accompany politically charged lyrics. His humor is often blue which means he swears, like a lot. Really… a lot.”

Hamilton Loomis @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Loomis. You know, he’s that Galveston Blues rocker dude.

Friday, June 10

Paul Collins’ Beat, Bad Sports, Something Fierce, DJ Black Slacks, Psychedelic Sex Panther @ The Big Top - Power Pop god Paul Collins of the Nerves and The Beat hits main street.  Check out Our interview with him here.

The Thermals, The Wild Moccasins @ Fitzgerald’s - Speaking of Poppy sounds.  If you want Indie Pop, I suggest you check out the line up of Portland’s The Thermals (check out our interview here) and Houston’s Wild Moccasins.  That’s a pretty sweet bill.  I love this mellow version of Xylophones they did in Vienna.

The Bexar County Bastards (LP release), Hell City Kings, Southbound Saints @ Rudyard’s - Cutthroat Records releases its  newest 12 inches of rowdy Mother Fucker Rock and Roll.  $10 gets you and and a free album.  Sweet!  Plus Bill Fool and Christian Larson have birthdays this week so make sure to kick them in the groin.

Craig Kinsey, Benjamin Wesley, Sara Van Buskirk @ Heights Live! - Sideshow Tramp’s Craig Kinsey kicks back with the hyper talented Benjamin Wesley and folkie Sara Van Buskirk. Should be schweet.

Heartless Bastards, The Bright Light Social Hour, The Wheeler Bros. @ Warehouse Live -Guitarist/Vocalist Erika Wennerstrom kicks some might bluesy rock and roll ass.  Just sayin’.

The Dread Lair Showcase, featuring Humut Tabal, Spectral Manifest, Mhinotahn, Bound In Flesh, Vacillation, & Pariah Messiah @ Walter’s - This show should kick some ass.  How could it not with Austin’s Black Thrash Metal band Humut Tabal leading the charge.  Unlike Your band they have cool song names like “Denizens of Eternal Light” and “Wielder of the Daemon Blade.”  That is fucking awesome!

Mötley Crüe, Poison, The New York Dolls @ Toyota Center - I know someone who crashed a car to “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn.”  That is pretty embarrassing.

Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine @ House of Blues - Lounge Versions of Rock, Rap and Pop songs?  I guess it cute (and I do applaud anybody who can combine Rage Against the Machine and dick jokes) but this is kind of like the joke you’ve heard a million times.

Pepper Rabbit, The TonTons, Second Lovers and Empress Hotel @ Mango’s - There’s something very sweet about this duo’s music but then again I’m a sucker for Ukes.

Saturday, June 11

Noah and the Whale, Bahamas @ Fitzgerald’s - Maybe I’m missing it here. London’s Noah and the Whale may play some lovely baroque indie pop that uses some rustic instruments but Bluegrass?  What up with that Wikipedia?

The Unzipped, Idiginis, The Ghost Storys, Ryan Scroggins and the Trenchtown Texas, The Bandulus @ Mango’s - Psychobilly rockers Unzipped and everyone’s favorite musical mutt of ska, reggae, country, folk, jazz, swamp, roots, etc., Ryan Scroggins, should make this a pretty awesome bill.

Houston Beer Fest 2011, featuring Disfrutalo, DJ Snow White, Plump, John Stoll, The Lotus Effect, Beau Hinze and the Backporch Shufflers, DJ Sparks, The American Heist, DJ Tantrum, & more @ Hermann Square Park (downtown; 2-10:30PM) - YES Beerfest.  I like the sound of that!

This Will Destroy You, John Lamonica, Equals @ Fitzgerald’s - Bring some good drugs; this will indeed destroy you

Free Radicals, Zwee, Zin @ The Continental Club - You may not like Right Wing provocateur Nick Cooper’s abrasive politics but his books like “Guilty: Liberal ‘Victims’ and Their Assault on America” and “Godless: The Church of Liberalism” have sold millions. Despite that we have to admit  he does also play some funky-ass beats.

Joel Gregoire (CD release), Ground Zero, Epic @ The Mink - OK I never cared for guitar stuff like Joe Satriani and all that kind of jazz but I have to admit I love the fact that someone like Joel Gregoire is keeping that flame lit.

Shaan @ Arena Theatre - Oh damn, Indian Playback singers again!

Underworld, featuring DJ Mina & DJ vvJames @ Numbers - This just in…contrary to prior reports, DJ Mina & DJ vvJames will NOT be playing Skiffle tracks all night.

Suzanna Choffel @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Well, I gotta give it up to Austin Singer Songwriter Suzanna Choffel.  Usually the words “Austin Singer Songwriter” convey a folkie with a guitar but she brings in a lot of jazzy and pop elements which are a pretty nice break from what you’d expect.

WNBR @ Super Happy Fun Land -
WNBR?  Actually, it’s not a band but we’re gonna mention it because it’s the World Naked Bike Ride.  They explain it thusly;  The international event celebrates “cycling and the human body. The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists on the road and is a protest against oil dependency.”  Blah Blah Blah Yeah whatever, let’s just admit it’s a great excuse to ride naked and wave our naked tushies at drivers!  Woo!

Stalley, Mookie Jones, Doughbeezy, Uzoy @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) - Ohio Hip Hop fans I give you Stalley.

Sammy Kershaw, Daryle Singletary @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - Point of Fact: Sammy Kershaw country videos are pretty painful.

Sunday, June 12

Robert Ellis @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - The man who makes you want to put away your guitar in shame himself hits the duck.

Long Long Long, Come See My Dead Person, Urizen, Triskadekaphilia, Peter Piek @ Super Happy Fun Land - Long Long Long has some nice that lovely chiming African guitar sound mixed with some nice psych vocals.  Good stuff.

All The Way To The Bank, The Nephilim Terror, Carry Your Ghost, Artifacts, Hematidrosis, Rise From Your Grave, 1972, When Men Became Gods @ Numbers - and on the 7th day God made made Metal!  Oh Yaaaayess!

Life Erased, Embolization @ The Ponderosa - God also made hardcore on the seventh day because if you’re God you can do cool stuff like that!

The Doobie Brothers @ House of Blues - Three words “What’s Happening Episode”

Earth, Wind & Fire @ Verizon Wireless Theater - OH FUCKING SHIT!  I LOVED THIS COMMERCIAL WHEN I WAS A KID!!!! Yes, I’m that old!

Tuesday, June 14

Aretha Franklin @ Arena Theater - If there is anyone, and I mean anyone, who does not appreciate Aretha, kill them!  Seriously, that’s how you can tell the pod people from the humans!

Funeral Party @ Cactus Music (5PM) - Upbeat LA indie rockers Funeral Party and St. Arnold’s Beer.  Sounds like fun.

Willis Alan Ramsey, Alison Rogers @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - I’m not going to tell you what Texas Singer Songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey is most famous for.  Instead I’m going to direct you here and let you experience it in its full glory!

Sadly, it looks like the Aretha Franklin show may not be happening; it’s not listed at all now on the Arena Theater site, and Live Nation’s showing no Aretha dates anywhere around here… :(
