This Week’s Featured Show

Super Happy Leo Party and Ukulele Festival 2011
featuring Poopy Lungstuffing
Cowboy Indian Bear
The Grass Skirts,
Organ Failure
The Annoysters
Jacob Kibler
@ Super Happy Fun Land
- I am being utterly sincere when I say I love ukes.  Sure these Hawaiian instruments are often seen as kitschy and goofy.  Hell, look at this dude; he’s kind of both of those things but you know what? That dude looks like he’s sincerely having fun and that’s the thing about ukes - they have this sweet and innocent sound that completely disarms all cynicism.  Seriously, if you hate ukuleles, you really need to reassess your soul.  The show is free so, check your irony at the door and enjoy our 50th state’s finest gift to music.

Thursday, August 18

Dead Prez @ Fitzgerald’s - The classic politically charged hip-hoppers have a new album on the way and, by they way,  Stic.man and M-1 hit the 15 year mark as a duo.

The Chop Tops, The Rocketz, The Strikers, The Ghost Storys @ Mango’s - Rockabilly from Santa Cruz, Cali

El Ten Eleven, The Globes, Searching for Signal @ Fitzgerald’s - Fans of Double-necked guitars…El Ten Eleven is your kind of band.

Houston Fringe Festival, featuring Sobers & Godley, Tina Mullone, & Milo & Shyla @ Super Happy Fun Land - The Second Weekend of this festival kicks off at SHFL.

Maximus @ Warehouse Live - Normally I won’t bother with cover bands but their face book has a cover of Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets to Paradise” that made me snarf.

Friday, August 19

The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, Darkest Hour, Six Feet Under, Dying Fetus, Powerglove, As Blood Runs Black, Oceano, Fleshgod Apocalypse @ House of Blues - This is like a listing of good band names, bad band names.  The Black Dahlia Murder and Oceano are kind of lame while Dying Fetus and Fleshgod Apocalypse are pretty good names but, for Nintendo fans, Powerglove for the win!

Venomous Maximus (EP release), The Energy, A dream Asleep, Eagle Claw, Maleveller, Turbokrieg, Tornadho, Carry The Storm, TeXXXas, Legion @ Fitzgerald’s (upstairs & downstairs) - The next stage in Venomous Maximus’ plan for world domination takes place tonight!

Tyagaraja, Mason Lankford @ Khon’s -If VM is too heavy for you, Tyagaraja at everyone’s favorite wine and dart pad on Milam may be more your speed.

Summer Soul Jam, featuring Mexican Stepgrandfather, The Journey Agents, Electric Attitude, Ozeal, & DJ Comp-1 @ The Mink
- Summer is always a good time for a soul jam.

Brad Boyer, Jimmy Pizzitola, Johnathon Ross, Hilary Sloan @ Heights Live! - folkies, country dude, and the in her own league Hilary Sloan.

The Carpettes, The Anarchitex @ Mangos -Dude, Mangos has the shittiest website. This show isn’t even listed on their crappy calendar.  Seriously Mangos, that’s weak!  If I hadn’t gotten an e-mail from Tory Mercer I would never have know this was happening.   Anyhow, Old school punks for across the pond and our own Anarchitex will be a solid bill.

The Judds @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - Holy crap, did you see Wynonna and Naomi’s hair back in the day?  It is epic!!!

Olive Juice @ Super Happy Fun Land - Ukes  “awesome!”,   Stand Up Bass  “That’s cool too!”,  Creedence - “Yea, I’m with that!”,   What if you put them in a canoe?   “OH HELL YES!!!!!!”

Mikey & The Drags, Bang Bangz, Second Lovers and Papaya@ Mango’s - Man I really hate the Mango’s “website.”  Yes, I put “website” in quotes.  Can I really just express what a worthless sack of digital shit that page is?  Here is the second example of a good show you wouldn’t know about from visiting their “website” - Miguel Ponce of The McKenzies has a new band and are they even mentioned?  No.  Is there a link or anything telling you anythign useful about who is playing?  No.  Suck suck suck.  the show on the other hand does not and deserves a venue that will do better by it’s artists.  Two words for Mango’s - Word Press.

The Ex-Optimists, Muhammad Ali @ Notsuoh - College Station boys celebrate a CD release by going in the ring with the formidable Ali.

Prince Paul, G.wizz, La Katrin, Brandon West & The Black Hats @ Fitzgerald’s - Somethign you may not know about Prince Paul is he’s from Yugoslavia and also known as Paul Karađorđević (Serbo-Croatian: Pavle Karađorđević, Serbian Cyrillic alphabet: Павле Карађорђевић, Slovene: Pavel Karadjordjević, English transliteration: Paul Karageorgevich; 27 April 1893 – 14 September 1976). He was Regent of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia during the minority of King Peter II and Peter was the eldest son of his first cousin Alexander I. His title in Yugoslavia was Knez (Knez Pavle Karađorđević), which translates best as “Prince”. Dude, Wikipedia is awesome!

Rock & Roll Portraits Official Afterparty, featuring Sara Van Buskirk, Kuumba Freeque, Cody Jasper, The 71′s, Knifight, & Benjamin Wesley @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) - Imagine you are 11 year old Jackson Potts. You are the photographer with the exhibit but do you get any booze?  No!  Yr fucked.  You get sodas!

Changoman, La Skaretas, Triple @ The Continental Club - Chango…that pretty much sums it up.

Jetspeed Music Showcase, featuring Ethreal, Metavenge, South, Good Job Underground, Stone Decent, & Downfall Rising @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - OK I have to admit, the Metavenge press pic of them in front of a mausoleum and with band name photoshopped above the the Mausoleum is pretty fucking awesome!

Bilal Oliver, N’dambi @ Undeground Live (ex-Groundhall) -Bilal’s sign, soulquarian, the smoothest of all constellations.

Asleep at the Wheel, Junior Gordon @ Firehouse Saloon - Yeeeehaw!

Sunday, August 21

We Are The Willows, Tigerparty, Bright Men of Learning @ The Mink -WATW folkie indie stuff is pretty and sweet, Tiger Party’s jangly rock is solid too, and of course BMOL can’t be touched.  Jeez this is just as good as the Rudz show.  Decisions decisions…

The Appleseed Cast, Hospital Ships @ Fitzgerald’s - Kansas post rockers vie for your time on a very busy Sunday of good shows.

Evil Entourage, Sculpting Atrocity, Mhinotahn, Venomous Supremacy, Chronophage, Chironex @ Feedback (11045 Fuqua) - Brutal metal for your humpday.  I only have one question for Sculpting Atrocity.  Does the name mean that you are sculpting some atrocity or does it mean a sculpture so bad that it is an atrocity to the craft?  Just wondering.
