It may seem bit odd to have a a foodie celebration as the featured event in the music section  but the quirky and charming Eat Gallery is hardly your typical place to get a meal.  When you think food, you may think of restaurants but EG is more than just another place to grab a bite to eat - it’s a Culinary Gallery that curates the works of up and coming chefs.  This week the gallery celebrates its one year anniversary with a sampling of its new menu items paired with an eclectic selection Houston’s  musicians - the spiritually charged Tyagaraja who has a new acoustic CD out, the long quiet Gretchen Schmaltz (for all you folks who recall a band by the name Western Civilization), and the Jazzy guitar and drum work of Bayuco Social.

I was interviewing general manager Marlon Hall for an upcoming article about the gallery and here is how he explained this weekend’s event, “You go back in Human history to the original home.  That home was a synergy of hush little baby songs and mother’s milk.  Music and mother’s milk - these two experiences are at the core of what it means to nurture a life.  One nurtures the mind and spirit, the other nurtures the body.  So what we’re going to do to celebrate this 52 week journey of curating dreams is bring those two synergies  together where you can taste what the music sounds like and hear what the food tastes like all in one night.  We want to confuse people to the point of infantile joy.”

Sounds pretty neat to me.  Let me just close with three words for you - “Green Chocolate smoothie.”  An organic spinach, avocado, agave nectar, vanilla, & almond milk smoothie may sound pretty weird but it’s crazy good! No seriously!

Thursday, September 6

Texas Music Night, featuring Nelo, Folk Family Revival, Mingo Fishtrap, & more @ House of Blues - Austin rock dudes who recently recorded at Willie’s Pedernales studio headline this Lone Star State bill.

Disfrutalo!, Perseph One feat. Josiah Gabriel, Devil Killing Mother, Love Horse @ Avant Garden - Jammy psych stoner rock from Pasadena

David Dondero @ Fitzgerald’s - NPR’s Robin Hilton put Dondero as #10 is a list of the Best Living Songwriters (you can see the list here at this link).  Hilton writes, “This guy is barely a blip on maps to even the remotest of musical landscapes. But I keep pushing him and hoping he’ll be recognized for the brilliant artist he is. Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst is often cited as one of the best songwriters making music today, and he’s credited David Dondero for his whole sound.

Southern Backtones @ House of Blues (Restaurant) - Good gravy the Backtones have been playing a lot of shows since last week.

Acous’mix Re*View, featuring FLCON FCKER, AVOXBLUE, & Underwater Canyons @ Notsuoh - not sure if there is a theme to this series but if FF is on the bill, I’m cool with that.

Charlie Mars @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - singer songwriter kind of in the Jason Mraz vein

Friday, September 7

Street Dogs, The Koffin Kats, Roll The Tanks, Downtown Struts @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - Back in 1998, Dropkick Murphys lead singer Mike McColgan left the Murphys to become a Boston firefighter like his uncle.  Four years later, he left the department to return to music with this band

Blackmarket Syndicate, The Hates, Dogz on Parole, Skeleton Dick @ Rudyard’s - punky punks

Akron/Family , Hello Chief @ Fitzgerald’s - The folky Portlandians return

Kelly Clarkson, The Fray, Carolina Liar @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - Clarkson may have been the first winner on American Idol but, even if you don’t care for hep pop music, you have to admit she’s shown enough independence, backbone, and spunk over the years to have earned her respect as an artist.  Telling the record label bosses she wouldn’t stoop to self promotion and sing her single during a Katrina benefit was particularly classy.

Only Beast, The Medicine Years, Grizzly, Gut Radio @ Dean’s - Local band that had the good sense to post Adventure Time clips on its Facebook.

A Fistful of Soul presents Sound & Pressure Reggae Club @ Mango’s - OH Sheeeeit!  Fistful of Soul are bringing a Reggae and Ska party to Mango’s.

The O’s @ The Continental Club - Folksy Dallas duo.  One feller on the guitar and kick drum, The other feller on the banjo (or lapsteel) and tambourine.

Crystal Vision, Pwnyboy, Beyond Zro vs. Courtney Shay, Stage 7, Nico vs. Pkle, Randy V vs. Ermak, Buda Love, Sinik vs. Faiel, Kid Kong, Damage, Lost Prophet, Funky Jesus, Seduction vs. Zombs @ Stereo Live - Electrohouse duo from Oklahoma leads this battalion of EDM folks.

Gene Watson @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - The Palastine Texas country singer who scored a few chart hits back in the day.

Ronnie Milsap, Ezra Charles @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - You could say the same thing about Milsap except he’s from North Carloina

Saturday, September 8

Ben Nichols, Buxton @ Walter’s - Ben Nichols of Lucero kicks it with Buxton at Walters

Nava’s Farewell, Tour Kickoff Party, featuring Nava (the last place you look), AThousandColours, Castle Lights, Days Drive, & Bad Luck Irish @ Dean’s - You know their kickstarter has a super high tier where Nava will shave his beard off.  I’m sure there is some millionaire out there who can take on for the team.

Carolyn Wonderland @ Last Concert Cafe - The hot shot blues guitarist returns

The Crystal Method, Sean Carnahan, Surain @ Stereo Live - long time EDM duo from the city Carrot Top calls home.

Tycho, The Album Leaf @ Fitzgerald’s - ambient music producer who also does some neat design work as ISO50

Southbound Drive, The Beans, Handsome Ransom @ Mango’s - Austin Southbound Drive are actually not a bad band but they have the painful misfortune of making a really bad bad bad “in the studio” video that is so clueless that this should stand as a model for how NOT to make a video.   I can’t help but cringe at all the thumbs ups and all the shots of the band and the engineer nodding their heads in that “Dude, every note of what we are doing is so awesome!” kind of way.  It’s so utterly off-key and dude-bro self-important that they bring in a voice over to tell you how fucking awesome they really are, “When you hear it, it just has gravity and oozes cool..”  No really!!  I’m not making this up!!!!  Someone interrupts the song to say that!!!  You know the filter that keeps most bands in check; clearly it’s out to lunch here.  So, here is a suggestion to this bands management - yes, I am calling you out Sean Krenek and Chase Imbert - bands that “ooze cool” don’t have to jump up and down and say “I’m cool!  See?!!  See?!”  This let the music do the talking.  Anyhow, here is the video in question.  I encourage you to MST3K it as much as I did.

Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Espantapajaros @ Rudyard’s - San Francisco based Americana act on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label.

The Infamous Stringdusters, Days N’ Daze @ Fitzgerald’s - Acclaimed Nashville via Boston Bluegrassers

Wayne “The Train” Hancock @ Goode’s Armadillo Palace - Country, Rockabilly, Western Swing are just a few things the Train is known for.

The Stooges Brass Band @ The Continental Club - OH god please tell me it’s a brass band playing “funhouse”!!!  Please please please!!!!  You know I’m not even going to look because even though I can imagine this being a really cool New Orleans Brass band, I know I’ve now set my expectations too high.

Eyes Behind The Wall 3 Fest, featuring Red Light Girls, I Like You Go Home, Painful Vigil, Hard, Heraghty, Shining Sex, Death.Sick.Cu*t, Tutti i Colori del Buio, Grusom Dod, Folter, Blood Sacriifice, & Tellurian Fields @ Super Happy Fun Land - A festival of harsh noise wall artists hosted by Richard Ramirez and Sean E. Matzus.

Tyga, Kirko Bangz, Iggy Azalea, Sterling Simms, Jinsu @ Bayou Music Center - Hey, Tyga you just played here.  You gotta spread that stuff out a bit.

George Jones @ Arena Theater - Holy Moley! You can get yourself a $65 George Jones throw blanket that looks like that image on the right!!!  That is freakin’ awesome!  There is so much awesomeness going on there I can’t even begin to address it!!!

Enanitos Verdes @ House of Blues - Argentine Rock trio

Southern Backtones @ Belle’s Landing (West Columbia) - See what I mean?

Ray Benson @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - The front man for Austin’s Asleep at the Wheel does it solo this time around.

Zoya Shuhatovich @ The Clarion (Brazosport) - Russian born, Gorky State Conservatory pianist who immigrated to Houston back in 94, did some time at the Moores School, and even played for President Clinton

Sunday, September 9

Two Gallants, Papa @ Fitzgerald’s - The Two Gallants most infamous encounter with Houston police came at Walter’s on Washington years ago.  Jeez and that’s when the noise ordinance was at least reasonable.  I wonder how that would have gone down had we had the newer draconian noise ordinances  in place.

Summer La Voz Concert Series, featuring Grupo Fantasma & Girl In A Coma @ Discovery Green - Latin festival featuring two favorites from Austin and San Antonio

Slash, Myles Kenedy and The Conspirators, Foxy Shazam @ House of Blues - Forgive me but I am the only person on this planet who found Guns and Roses to be a competent but utterly unremarkable rock band.  Sorry.  Still I give Slash his props - he’s a good guitarist and all that.

Dash Rip Rock @ The Continental Club - The New Orleans “Hellbillies” return

Kat Edmonson @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Austin singer songwriter with a jazzy undercurrent

The Temptations @ Arena Theater - This ain’t your granddaddy’s Temptations.  No, ’cause they have pretty much gone to the big gig in the sky and only Otis Williams has remained of the original line up.

Monday, September 10

Keith Rowe,  Sandy Ewen, Damon Smith @ 14 Pews (8pm) - Whoah, I just just Just got an e-mail about promoting this show!!!!  Zoinks Free Imrov manna from the sky!!!! Dig it!

Featherface, Pile, The Escatones @ Mango’s - Featherface just dropped their new album and it’s a doozy!

Wicked Poseur, Hume, LIMB @ Rudyard’s - Triple bill of awesomeness so schweeeet that your head will spin like a top, blast off your head, achieve Earth orbit, then explode into some really really neat fireworks. No really!

Tuesday, September 11

Mikey & The Drags, War Party, Sealion, Rebel Beach @ Walter’s - local  reverb drenched garage pop

Katatonia, Devin Townsend, Paradise Lost @ Warehouse Live - So I was reading on Slate recently and found out that (despite some solid metal coming from Sweden like Katationia) Swedish Metal is not one of the top three things people ask Swedes about - that would be The Swedish Chef, Abba, and Ikea.

Rosie Flores @ The Continental Club - Rockabilly/ Country lass from Austin via San Antonio

Lord North, The Living Glory @ Super Happy Fun Land - Oklahoma Garage Rockers

Dirty River Boys @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Austin Americana dudes

Wednesday, September 12

Otep, Butcher Babies, One-Eyed Doll, Adamantium @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) - There was a friend of mine from university who was rEEEEEally into Otep.  Really Really.  I just thought they were alright.
