This Friday, the Houston Film Critics Society presents its Tenth Annual Film Awards Show.

The Houston Film Critics Society is composed of media professionals that promote and review films in print, online, on television and on the radio. The organization also promotes filmmaking in the greater Houston area.

In addition to mainstream titles – La La Land, Arrival, Moonlight, The Handmaiden, Hell or High Water, Lion, Jackie, The Nice Guys, Nocturnal Animals, Manchester by the Sea – being heralded, the HFCS also honors regional filmmaking. Additional awards are given out for categories as diverse as Best Actor/Actress, Best Song, Best Poster, Technical Achievement as well as Worst Film of the Year.

This year’s TIFA, or Texas Independent Film Award, celebrates five productions that were made in Texas. The films include the amazing documentary about the 1966 University of Texas sniper shooting told from the point of view of the victims, Tower, which is also nominated in the Documentary category.

Tower director Keith Maitland also has a doc on the Austin music scene titled A Song For You: The Austin City Limits Story in the running for a TIFA.

Other Texas productions being feted include: the family drama Krisha; a documentary about wrongfully convicted women Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four; and the fan-fiction-turned-teen-rom-com Slash.

Clay Lifford, writer/director of Slash and Tower animation director Craig Swaggs are scheduled to attend.

The Houston Film Critics Society Tenth Annual Awards Show unwinds at 7 pm on Friday, January 6 at MATCH (Auditorium 4, 3400 Main Street). Tickets are available here.
