This is a crazy week – we have some tour kick-offs (Grandfather Child & Caddywhompus) , Girls Rock Camp, and a DVD release (the hyper sensitive folks of When We Ruled H-Town) but in the end I had to go with the Houston Press’ big annual round-up of local bands nominated for their annual no-prize – The Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. A ton of bands across various downtown venues is kind of a little unfair but where else can you not only find some bands you already know and love, but also have the opportunity to expand you horizons and stumble across a new favorite. OK sure, as a representative slice of the best that Houston has had to offer in the course of a year, the HPMAs aren’t perfect by a long shot but let’s face it, even at their best, they were never anything you should have taken too seriously. For some bands it’s this big recognition thing to win but the awards themselves always kind of seemed like an afterthought. To me, the HPMA’s were just a fun way to present a buffet of local talent – some that are exceptional, some that are pretty good , and a few that probably should never have made it under the sneeze guard in the first place. (And yes, even the stinkers can be kind of fun in their own way.) Bringing all that talent together is something that should be commended so kudos Houston Press.

Thursday, August 2

Grandfather Child (tour kickoff), Mikey & The Drags, Khruangbin, Hamamatsu Tom @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) – One of Houston’s most amazing bands (and criminally overlooked in the HPMAs) kicks off their tour. Highly recommended.

Caddywhompus (tour kickoff), LIMB, Moths, Featherface @ Fitzgerald’s – Former H-Town cats now living in New Orleans kick off their tour. Plus LIMB and Featherface? OK, also highly recommended.

Burned Out, featuring Sideshow Tramps, Potbelly, & Southern Backtones @ Fitzgerald’s – One of the advantages of having both a downstairs and an upstairs is being able to catch the show above and SST without having to club hop.

Ghosts Along the Brazos @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – Austin Americana, Texas Swing lads

Juicy J, Devin the Dude, OG Ron C, GO MC J Stone @ Warehouse Live – the Academy Award winning rapper and the always awesome Devin hit the east side.

Bachaco, Bending Villa, Laradio Skandalosa, Always Guilty, DJ Klandestino @ Mango’s – Reggae, dance hall, and Cumbia..Bachaco says “Sure, why not?”

Vision, featuring Glasnost DJs, Tangled Shadows, Gin Martini, Kris_C Strange, Jess The Mess, & Max Xandaux @ Numbers – you hav e to love a band whose Facebook has a link to their website that in turn links you back to Facebook. But anyhow the theme for this event is Andy Warhol’s would-be 84th birthday.

Pitbull @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion – Do you also think that if Omar put on some shades, he could pass for this Miami rapper?

Little River Band @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) – You can’t get more Yacht rock than these Australians

Friday, August 3

RACES, Saint Motel, Generation Landslide @ Rudyard’s – Double shot of LA indie pop

Kiss, Mötley Crüe @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion – Let’s face it Kiss is a cold heartless machine, but even so, they are a pretty cool one.

DJ Numark, J-Live, Planet Asia @ Numbers – I’m going out on a limb here but I’d say there’s a 99.9% chance there will be some dancing involved.

Fetal Disgorge, Scattered Remains, Sadistic Butchering @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) – I’m going out on a limb here but I’d say there’s a 99.9% chance there will be no dancing involved but there will be a lot of Dio devil signs.

Well dudes, for the most part, they still do. Sorry, not eveyone is going to like the same things but again I admire the work you put into it so here take this hankie, wipe those sad sad tears, and have fun.
