Austin rock outfit Brother Sports recently released their latest singles, “oh baby” and its b-side, “clutch city.” The group consists of five members, Anthony and Zach — the two main members — alongside Evan, Cobi, and Robert, and refer to themselves as “5 guys from Austin loudly playing psychedelic garage pop songs until we run out of time.” These two singles succeed their last one, “i’ll wait for you,” which was a quite good lo-fi pop song. Their sound, to me, is best described as instrumentation from Rex Orange County plus Julian Casablancas on vocals. The singles can be streamed/purchased here.

The former opens up with a bubbly synth intro accompanied with some lo-fi vox and drum beats. Once the chorus is in full-swing the guitar goes through a dip while the vocalist repeats “it’s over again.”

“Clutch city” opens up with “you know that I want you,” and “I need you more than you need me.” This song, a nod to Houston, is a very kind gesture coming from an out-of-town band. It is also substantially faster and more “upbeat” than the former. However, my personal favorite part of the track is the subtle complexity of it, for example, the way the phone dial-up noises effortlessly blend in somewhere between the vocals and guitars. I feel as if this song could have served as its own single.

Brother Sports will also be making a stop at Satellite Bar on Aug. 16 alongside Anchor, the Mammoth and Indigo Youth.
