“Voices and thoughts will be expressed and it’s going to be a poetic, acoustic twist,” said Kris Smith, curator of the Poetic Park event held at Emancipation Park this Saturday February 23rd, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. “The purpose of this event is to give every poet a chance to shine, especially, those who have never performed for Counter-Crawl,” Smith explained. Counter-Crawl is a multiple venue community building event for artists that anyone can be a part of. Poetic Park is a poetry event being held in anticipation of the Counter-Crawl event held by the community every four months.

“The audience will obtain some poetic words of wisdom and inspiring words from the talented individuals I have selected to be a part of this event,” Smith continued. The event will host 18 poets, selected from various poetry collective groups in the community, performing their work in the historical Emancipation Park. “Emancipation’s a pretty laid back spot and it’s good and suitable for outdoor activities and holding performances.” Emancipation Park has a long history of speakers and events granted that the park’s origins date back to the late 1880s.

An example of some of the work being performed comes from event host Kris Smith, who describes himself as, “a free verse, spoken word kind of guy and I’ll be sharing some poetry myself. There will be a range of different topics discussed.” The poets featured include Alex Nikkhoo, Jet, Lynn Carden, Adam Lopez, Becky Van Meter, Victor B. Johnson Sr., Terrance TPWLW, Deniz Deecolonize Lopez, Matt D., Andrew Cobb, Johnny Walker, Z.M. Wise, Thay Alafitta, Mike McGuire, Jajah Gray and Diana Ventura. Acoustics provided by Thien Nguyen and Chad a.k.a Deacon Khet.

“I encourage many to attend, especially if you are a poetry fan or a poet yourself,” Smith retorted. The event is free and open to the public. For more information visit the event page.
