Mixed Media Music Series events at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFAH) began in 2005 with Beats of Basquiat, in honor of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Eric Castillo, aka Ceeplus Bad Knives, was brought in to curate music in representation and reflection of the art. After Basquiat, the musical parties were continuous and ever changing as different exhibits rotated in and out of the museum. Featured artists over the years have included Grandmaster Flash, DJ Spooky, Shepard Fairey, Glass Candy, Chromeo, Breakestra, Peanut Butter Wolf, Cibo Matto, Kid Koala, I Am The World Trade Center, Juan Maclean, Frankie Chan, Flosstadamus, James Pants, and many more.
Despite the successful outcomes and popularity of the events, the last Mixed Media event was back in November 2008, until NOW. There have been some changes made– the new MFAH Mixed Media is designed and sponsored by IKEA; and the music no longer has to be directly related to one specific exhibit.
These come-back events will be hosted on select Fridays, once a month from 8pm to midnight. There will be cocktails, music, dancing, and plenty of entertainment for all. Stella Artois is the official beer of MFAH Mixed Media Designed by IKEA. Anyone and everyone is invited to this MFAH house party, and bringing friends is encouraged. The dates are July 27, August 24, September 21, October 26, November 16, and December 21.
The event tonight, July 27, will feature a performance by Soft Metals, a Portland-born electronic duo that now resides in LA. Also performing will be DJ Ceeplus Bad Knives, Bobby DJ, and Dave Wrangler. The first 100 guests in the door tonight will receive a complimentary limited-edition tote bag designed by local designer, Ali Rapp.
The event will be held in the Caroline Wiess Law Building of the MFAH, 1001 Bissonnet at Main. Guests must be 18 or older, and only 21+ may purchase drinks, so bring your photo ID.
