This Week’s Featured Show

Friday, January 4
American Fangs
Bury the Crown
Sanctus Bellum
Carry the Storm
Muhammad Ali
The Dollyrockers
The Dead Rabbits
Hell City Kings
Burn The Boats
The Wrong Ones
@ Fitzgerald’s

I wrote about American Fangs a couple of months ago for the monthly music preview of FPH, and here I am again, writing about my favorite rock band in Houston.  They’re back at Fitzgerald’s on January 4 with stand out local acts Muhammad Ali and Hell City Kings, among other great Houston artists.  Fangs have been one of the bands that has kept rock music alive in this city.  Although sometimes lumped in with the Scout Bar and Buzz bands of the city, they bring something completely different to the table.  Political and conspiracy theory laced lyrics combined with an attitude of the 90s grunge explosion bands, these guys have been on a trajectory to actually change how people view radio rock.  Not only are the songs great, but the live show is absolutely killer.  If you haven’t seen this band before at one of their many shows in Houston, you’re missing out.  Do yourself a favor and go see them before they’re packing out bigger venues.

Thursday, January 3

Leftover Crack, Juicy Karkass, Crackbox @ Fitzgerald’s

Legendary mischief punks come to town to cause some trouble. Given the band’s past trouble with the law, I’d expect the cops to show up at some point.

Dante Higgins, C-Stone, Young Scotty, OT, Roy-O, Undergravity @ Warehouse Live (Studio)

Houston’s underground rap scene surfaces with 6 up and coming artists.

Friday, January 4

Adam & Eve Fashion Show, Cirque Show, and Concert Rock Party Circus Part 2, featuring American Swindle, Otenki, Shaving Z, Aramite, Downfall Rising, & Avengers Dance Crew @ House of Blues

A fashion show, cirque show, and circus all wrapped into one event.  That’s not all either – live rock bands plus a dance crew?  Yes, please.

Acous’Mix Re*View: First Friday – Obscured By Echoes, Say Girl Say, & Sydnee Jane & the Jane-ettes @ Notsuoh
Acoustic music for the emo in you.  And it’s at Notsuoh.  You can’t get much more sad than that.

Scooter Brown Band @ Firehouse Saloon

With their popularity rising, Scooter Brown Band brings their take on modern country music to town.

Earphunk @ Last Concert Cafe

Funk band kicks off their U.S. tour at no better place to kick off a funk tour – Last Concert Cafe.  Don’t be alarmed if you see a huge cloud of smoke rising from the crowd.  The venue isn’t burning down, it’s just weed.

Placid Blue and In Memory Of… @ Jet Lounge

For the blues in you.  They even have blue in their name so you know it’s good.

Saturday, January 5

The Escatones (45 release), Poor Pilate, The Linus Pauling Quartet @ Rudyard’s

The Escatones are releasing their new 45 record and they’ll be sharing the stage with one of the best local bands to come out of Houston this year – Poor Pilate.  Seeing PP at Rudyard’s is a treat.  This band is destined for big things.

Wo Fat and From Beyond @ Fitzgerald’s

A band named after a Hawaii Five-O character?  This has to be good.

Bermuda, A Past Unknown, Deserters, Those Who Fear @ Walter’s

California band Bermuda bring death metal to Houston in full force.

Sunday, January 6

Fuzzyfest featuring Troothless, Desert Ratts, Priapism, Freddie Gonorrhea and The Gunz, Small Dog Syndrome, Hoffle Stoffle Awaffogus, Braindead, Stay At Home Mom, Marissa, & B.C. Walk @ Super Happy Fun Land

After all these years living in Houston, I have still yet to see a show at Super Happy Fun Land, but booking a band with the name Freddie Gonorrhea and The Gunz, I feel like this might be the one that actually gets me there.

Monday, January 7

Akris, Rat Babies, Fera, Square and Compass, Gospel & The Wolf @ Mango’s ($5)

I saw Square and Compass a few months ago at House of Creeps and they put on a phenomenal show.  Not a band to miss. It’s only $5 and Mango’s is still a great place to see live bands.

Wednesday, January 9

Adestria, Polarization, Wrath of Vesuvius @ Walter’s

Metalcore is still alive and well.  Walter’s is still the best venue in the city to see a hardcore/metal show and the perfect place to circle pit.  Be safe in there.
