This Week’s Featured Show

Saturday, January 12
Deseret
Poor Pilate
Ashley Franklin
Lisa’s Sons
@ The Continental Club

In the past year, I’ve been seriously astounded at how much great music is coming out of our city.  At the forefront of the resurgence in our scene is Poor Pilate.  Led by local virtuoso David Lascoe, the band’s popularity has risen pretty quickly and for good reason.  They put out one of the best local albums last year.  Reminiscent of bands like Delta Spirit, their songs are well-crafted, catchy, and wildly fun.  Not only that, but Lascoe probably has the best beard in Houston.  Joining them will be Deseret and Lisa’s Sons, both impressive locals in their own right.  If you can’t catch the band at Continental Club, they will also be playing an in-store at Cactus Music the same day.  3pm.  I recommend seeing both shows - watching Poor Pilate in two different settings shows their diversity as a live band.  Pick up the album, you won’t be disappointed.

Thursday, January 10

Only Beast, Beetle @ The Continental Club - The Beatles cover band Beetle continues their weekly residency.

Friday, January 11

B.B. King @ House of Blues - The undisputed blues king AT House of Blues.  Doesn’t get much better.

Emmure, Whitechapel, Unearth, Obey The Brave, The Plot In You @ Fitzgerald’s - Unearth is the diamond in the rough here.  They wrote one of the best breakdowns in heavy music of all time in “Endless” and they’re still going strong.

Los Skarnales, Jungle Rockers, Mikey & The Drags, Little Joe Washington @ The Continental Club - The undisputed champions of ska and Little Joe Washington take over Continental Club.

Down, Warbeast, Honky @ Warehouse Live - Down is a great band, but this show is also worth it just to hear frontman Phil Anselmo’s ridiculous rants.  It’s like a stand up comedy and metal show mixed into one.

Ex-Girlfriends, Key Bumpz, Midwives, Kill Your Friends Club, Latin Amore and the Heartbreakers, Swervy and the Nutsacks @ The Big Top - I’ve heard great things about new band Key Bumpz.  And with a band called Swervy and the Nutsacks, who would want to miss this?

The Growlers, The Vacant Lots @ Fitzgerald’s - Self proclaimed Beach Goth band brings their unique take on California psychedelic rock.

Saturday, January 12

Roky Moon & The Kiss Goodnight, Young Girls, A Giant Dog, Psychic Palms @ Fitzgerald’s - Any time Roky Moon has a new project, it’s time to get excited.  Along with the great Psychic Palms, this should be marked on your calendar as “Do Not Miss”

New York Night Train Soul Clap & Dance-Off featuring DJ Jonathan Toubin @ Fitzgerald’s - DANCE OFF

Gnar World Order, ComeXClean, Mt. Cruiser, Black Coffee @ Notsuoh - Appropriately named Black Coffee plays at late night hang out Notsuoh.

Black Veil Brides, William Control @ House of Blues - Hot Topic metal for those that are still into that sort of thing.

Tyler Hilton, Ryan Cabrera, Teddy Geiger @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room)  - Does anyone remember Ryan Cabrera?  I’d love to forget, but can’t.

Mixology V.2, featuring DJ/VJ Rob, DJ Xcess, DJ Mina, & DJ Breye 7x @ Numbers -  A bunch of DJs no one knows at Numbers.  Fitting.

Cooder Graw @ Firehouse Saloon - On the same night Ray Price is in town, modern country band Cooder Graw plays.   Choose your generation of country music.

Phantom-X, Siren, Judith Priest (Judas Priest tribute), WolfeBlitzer @ Acadia Bar & Grill - A Judas Priest tribute AND a band named after everyone’s favorite CNN host?  Yes, please.

Ray Price @ Stafford Centre (Stafford) - Country legend comes back to Houston.

Sunday, January 13

Pam Jam Benefit, featuring Carolyn Wonderland, The Hightailers, Fondue Monks, Beans Barton & the Bi-Peds, Guy Schwartz and the New Jack Hippies, Little Big Rock, Kenny Cordray and Love Street, Opie Hendrix and the Texas Tallboys, & Blowtorch Repair @ Last Concert Cafe (4PM) - Lots of hippie music for the peace & love inside you.  It’s impossible to leave this place not high.

Neil Hamburger, Tim Heidecker, DJ Douggpound, The Kenny “K-Strass” Strasser Yo-Yo Extravaganza @ Walter’s ($16) - This truly a great time for comedy in America.  2 of this country’s up and coming comedians plus the DJ from the great Neal Brennan’s podcast.  Don’t miss this one.

Tuesday, January 15

The Helio Sequence, Young Girls, Showers @ Walter’s  - Houston continues to impress with more good local music.

X-XV featuring Deep Cuts, Modrag, Pharaohs, & Starma @ Mango’s ($5) - A great local band in Deep Cuts for only 5 bucks.
