This Week’s Featured Show

Friday November 18

The Energy
Titan Blood (7″ release)
Weird Party
The Mahas

DJ sets by
Sam Ackerman
Aaron Danger
@ Rudyard’s -
This was honestly kind of a toss up between the Pauline Oliveros show over at Rice, the B L A C K I E & Limb show over at NOTSUOH, and this one.  But in the end I kind of figured this one kind of won the arm wrestling match.  I mean come on, look at that line up - four ass-whooping take no prisoners local bands is pretty awesome and they even threw in some DJ sets by Ackerman and Team Science’s Aaron Danger.  To cinch it, the show is also a record release for Titan Blood’s new 7″ which is a 5-song slab of snotty punk I am really diggin - particularly the second side where they open with this funky-ass soul thing because, damn it, why not open up a side with some soulful shit? I mean seriously, four killer bands, some solid DJs, and a Rudzburger?  How could you do better on a Friday night?

Thursday, November 17

Between the Buried and Me, TesseracT, Animals As Leaders @ House of Blues - Screamy North Carolina Metal.

Aretha Franklin @ Arena Theater - Last time Aretha came to town she canceled.  Hopefully the queen of soul can make it this time.

Sting @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Sting is pretty annoying and it’s been a long time since he’s done anything to counter that obnoxiousness but whatever.

Melt Banana, Giant Battle Monster, Mr. Castillo @ Fitzgerald’s - Japanese spazzy noisy weirdos and I mean that in the best possible way.

The Firehouse Showcase Concert Series, featuring Shawn Nelson & Sean Reefer and the Resin Valley Boys @ Firehouse Saloon - Sean Reefer country with an ummm herbal air to it.

Junior Brown @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - The Baritone lapsteel god returns to Houston.

Swingin’ Utters, Far From Finished, Radio Blackout, The Ballistics @ Fitzgerald’s - California, punk, fat wreck that should tell you all you need to know

Generation Landslide, Dead Roses, Chelsea Hotel @ Rudyard’s - that’s a lot of bands for a Thursday night, hope you plan on getting to work late.

A Fistful of Soul @ The Mink (front bar) - DJs at the mink.

Corey Taylor (mem. of Slipknot/Stone Sour) @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) - not what you would call a slipknot fan but meh, I’ll give it a mention.

Mac Miller @ Warehouse Live (sold out) - You’ll have to catch Pittsburgh rapper Malcolm McCormick elsewhere cause this one is sold out. Personally, I like his old stage name Easy Mac better.  But then I’m eating mac and cheese at black hole while I type this so there ya go.

Vision, featuring Cuba Gooding Jr., Kiyoshi, & Tangled Shadows DJs @ Numbers - DJ at numbers?  I would have never thought of that?

Friday, November 18

B L A C K I E/LIMB @ Notsuoh - Wow, so much awesomeness in this double bill that I’m just gonna have to step back and take it in.

6th Annual Winter Holiday Art Market Preview Party, featuring Yello Echo & Andrew Karnavas @ Winter Street Studios (6-10PM) - Art festival with a few bands.  Best of all it’s free.

41st Annual University of St. Thomas Shadwell’s Wake, featuring Fat Tony, Free Radicals, The Beans, & lots of bad poetry @ Malloy Hall (3815 Mt. Vernon) - Wow, OK really an event that is devoted to reading bad poetry?  I love it.  total candidate for featured show.

Rebirth Brass Band @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - The New Orleans Funk Jazz cats return.

Sting @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Man, really? TWO nights of his stinginess?

Vince Neil @ House of Blues  - I just finished reading the Ozzy Bio and when Ozzy says that touring with Motley Crew was an education.  Ya gotta give it up for people who can show Ozzy a thing or two.

Hello Kitty: Hardstyle 2011, featuring DJ Jasmine Rose, DJ Clusterphuck vs. DJ Midget, DJ Hazzard, Rokindownthehouse, DJ Wynnde, & 8eTribe @ Stereo Live - Anyone who knows me knows I love Sanrio.  So Instant mention!

Trapped Under Ice, Hundredth, Backtrack, Betrayal, Take Offense @ Mango’s - Hardcore from Baltimore.

Kuumba Freeque/Picture Book @ The Continental Club - Rock funk duo and Chase Hamblin’s 60’s tribute band

Holy Ghost!, Eli Escobar, Jessica 6 @ Fitzgerald’s - Whoah, little did I know that the label of the funky dancy Brooklyn based Holy Ghost (Green Label Sound) is owned by Mountain Dew.  Do the Dew!

Blood On The Dance Floor, New Year’s Day, Angelspit @ Fitzgerald’s- Blood On The Dance Floor is an Orlando Florida band that sounds like they get a lot of airplay on Disney Radio. Nope, not lovin’ it but maybe your pre-teens might be into it.

The Jayhawks @ House of Blues - The Minnesota country rockers are back in town.

Senses Fail, Stick To Your Guns, Make Do And Mend, The Story So Far @ Fitzgerald’s - pop punk.

Two Hoots & A Holler, Mike Stinson, The Umbrella Man @ The Continental Club - country and roots rock, you get the idea.

The Foreign Exchange @ Fitzgerald’s - well how many bands can say that they traded files via Instant Messenger to come up with their first album?

Nameless Sound, featuring Pauline Oliveros, Ricardo Arias, & Chris Cafe @ Wortham Opera Theatre/Shepherd School of Music (Rice Univ. campus; performance begins at 7PM) - Speaking of technology bringing people  in different places together to make music.  Oliveros does just that with a live performance in Houston with a fellow in California and another guy in Columbia

Destroying Texas Fest 6, featuring Impiety, Obeisance, Blaspherian, Nodens, Terrorist, Ophian, & Panteon @ The White Swan - Metal fest

you had to have left theescatonesdadamodaclockpoledocellisonspapaya out of your post about Monday 21st at Fitz on purpose. remind what it was we ever did to you?

  • joeortiz says:

nevermind i’m a dick with bad eyesight.

  • RamonLP4 says:

    Ha Ha Ha. Well played.

Man, did I accidentally delete a few days there? Kind of odd there are no Monday or Tuesday gigs mentioned. Hmmm, I’ll have to check it later fucking McAffe shit ass “virus protection” has Space City Rock listed as Red. Worst fucking sack of shit software ever - Jeremy Hart over there tried to contact the people who reported him as a bad site and one retracted their bad review while the other - the main source of the complaint never ever ever reponded. So, a perfectly legit site is blacklisted at work thanks to because some asswipe gets his jollies out of black listing sites without giving the webmasters any recourse to address the false report.

Sorry on a rant that bullshit still pisses me off. “Trusted Source” my ass!

Anyhow, I’ll look into it later when I can…or just send me the deets, yo.

  • joeortiz says:

    Blacklisted? That’s lame.

The show moved to Notsuoh on Monday and is still free. The Escatones, Dada Moda, Clockpole, Doc Ellisons, PAPAYA (performing a partial Somosuno reunion).

  • David Dove says:
