This Week’s Featured Show

Sunday November 06

Tinariwen
with Sophie Hunger
@ Fitzgerald’s

plus early show
@ Cactus Music (3PM)

How often do you get to hear Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali play Houston?  Well, to understate it, not very often.  Normally, I’d write a little something here to explain why one show is particularly of interest but I think the short documentary below, with its very “Live at Pompeii” vibe, pretty much gives you the picture.  By the way, that’s no joke; they really did haul a bunch of gear to record the new album in the desert and yes, that’s Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe  of TV on the Radio who dropped in for a few days in the recording session.  PS, click the full screen option, it’s shot really well.

Deadman @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Southern rock dudes from Dallas.

Roy Clark @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - There’s more to Roy than just his stint at Hee Haw.  He’s a pretty bad ass guitarist.  Here’s a nice clip of him doing 12 Street Rag.  Go Roy!

Dwight Yoakam/Aaron Watson @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - Attention ladies, the bad-ass Bakersfield inspired dude who tilts his hat down and sings with that crazy twang is back in town.

Friday, November 4

M83, Active Child @ Warehouse Live - JDB did a review of the new record.  If you missed it, here is the link (link)

Mates of State, Generationals @ Fitzgerald’s - OK admittedly, I’m a sucker for the Mates of State indie pop formula.  So sue me.

Guns N’ Roses, Buckcherry @ Toyota Center - On the other hand, I have to admit that I’ve always found Guns and Roses to be one of the most overrated rock bands of all time.  there I said it.  So sue me.  Oh yeah and two words - Tommy Hilfiger.

Feast with the Beasts, featuring The B-52′s @ Houston Zoo (7-11PM) - Peter Griffin doing rock lobster still cracks me up!

Featherface, The Wheel Workers, Second Lovers @ Mango’s - Featerface teams up with The Wheel Workers and Second Lovers to fight the Legion of Doom but just this once.

J.W. Americana, Vivian Pikkles and the Sweethearts Über Alles @ Rudyard’s - Dang this is gonna be a good one.  JW and Vivian?  Nobody will be left standing!

The Tiger Lillies @ Cullen Theater (Wortham Center) -Matt Groening picked these London “Dark Cabaret” performers for All Tomorrows Parties last year.

Purity Ring @ Fitzgerald’s - Corin Roddick and Megan James of Gobble Gobble’s electronicky band.

Austra, Grimes, Cloud Nothings, Mr. Castillo @ Fitzgerald’s - Toronto synth driven new wavers.

moe., Great American Taxi @ Fitzgerald’s - If the words “jam band” give you a stiffie, then this is likely where you will be tonight.

Needtobreathe @ Minute Maid Park - Honestly, I have no clue who these guys are that they can fill up a baseball park but I guess they have their fans and more power to them I guess.   Me, after listening to a couple videos, I have to agree with the commentator on Youtube “This is what happens when musicians refuse to smoke marijuana.”

Celtic Thunder @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Sorry, but all I can think of when I hear “Celtic Thunder’ is some Welsh guys getting hammered after a football game, going to a pub, eating shitty fried food, and passing gas.  Sadly, this is nowhere near that awesome.

Spyro Gyra @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) -Not putting it down but it’s just not my thing. But if you are into fusion jazz, you might be interested to know they are in town.

Sunday, November 6

Youth Brigade, The American Heist, Blackmarket Syndicate @ Rudyard’s - There is no better American Punk rock road documentary that “Another State of Mind.”   That film chronicled Youth Brigade and Social Distortion’s 1984 tour and it’s just a perfect time capsule of that era.  Nice to see they got back together and are still rockin’.

Cinema Cinema, Greg Ginn & The Taylor Texas Corrugators @ Super Happy Fun Land -Two words, Greg Ginn.  Done!  I need say no more!

Canon Blue, Sorne, Kirby Brown @ Fitzgerald’s - Free show featuring orchestral pop solo performer Daniel James, whose Canon Blue project began as  a collaboration with Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor.
