Summerfest week is a rough week for bands playing venues around town so we want to try to give at least a little coverage to some shows happening this week that won’t be taking place along the Bayou. One that stands out to me is this one. For fans of Doom Metal this one is a treat. First off the local cats playing are all pretty bad ass - Venomous Maximus are kind of THE go to band when you want something heavy and relative newcomers From Beyond (who we feature in the June issue) are having an EP release tonight – but the headliner for this show, St. Vitus is brutal and pummeling classic metal that goes back to 1978 and the crazy thing is that this is 3/4th of the classic line up playing. Plus, this gives me a chance to share this video from the mid 80′s of the band playing the Palm Springs Community Center. Yeahyus!!!!!
Thursday, May 31
Nameless Sound, featuring John Butcher, Thomas Lehn, & Gino Robair @ 14 Pews (800 Aurora) – If you missed last night’s performance, here is your second chance to catch this excellent Jazz show.
Daughn Gibson, Hamamatsu Tom, The Wiggins @ Walter’s – Gibson went from Stoner metal drummer (Pearl and Brass) to dark country singer.
Two Tons of Steel, Mike Stinson @ Discovery Green - Part of the Houston Press’ free music series at the Green
Brave Combo @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - You don’t have to drive all the way to Denton to see these classic Texas Polka rockers, Just up to the Woodlands.
Friday, June 1
Black Tusk, Ghost Town Electric, Defending the Kingdom, Peloton @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) – More heavy music for your week.
Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - The rootsy former member of the Blasters, X, and The Knitters hits the duck.
Wednesday, June 6
Gillian Welch @ Cullen Theater – The celebrated grammy winning country, bluegrass, Americana singer would have been a nice add to Summerfest but Cullen Theatre is likely a less sweaty venue in which to see her.
