This Week’s Featured Show

Anarchitex
CD Release
@ Cactus Music
(5PM free)

Is it me or has Punk Rock been reduced to hardcore and Pop-Punk?  Sometimes it seems that way but back in the 80’s bands like Really Red, The Party Owls, Mydolls, The Pain Teens, Happy Fingers Institute, and Culturecide (to name a few) constantly played outside the sandbox of many today consider Punk.  Maybe they just called it Punk back then because there were no other labels at the time but the gamut was wide and the music was definitely uncompromising.

The Anarchitex are one such band.  They made some great music, tossed out at least one cassette I can recall, and disappeared like so many other bands of the era but, curiously enough, the band reunited a few years ago .  Thankfully, it wasn’t some lame case of some old dudes reliving their past but instead it was a band that reunited because they had something to say.   As a result, not only is it a thrill to see great players like Scott Ayers (phenomenal guitarist), John Reen Davis (less a singer than a writer with a sneering sense of social commentary), and Bob Weber (as punk a drummer as you can get) performing on stage but the new material is just as searing, smart-ass, and fun as anything they’d done years ago.   So do yourself a favor, get a couple cups of St. Arnold’s at Cactus and check them out Saturday afternoon.  You’ll see then why your application to receive a punk rock card was rejected.

Destry, Communipaw, Wails, Holy Fiction @ The Mink - Destry is (a) an  indie folk musician (b) A city in Northern France, or (c) Jimmy Stewart’s title character from the 1939 western.  Trick questions it’s all the above.

A Flock of Seagulls, Bad Manners, Vertigo Blue, Mr. Hands Revenge @ Numbers -They used “Space Age Love Song” in Symbiotic Titan which reminds me how lame it is that Cartoon Network decided that canceling that Genndy Tartakovsky’s series after one season was a good idea while signing on hacky Adult Swim crap like “The Problem Solvers” was a good one.  FAIL!  Thank god, Regular Show and Adventure Time are still around or I’d be really irked.
