Algernon Cadwallader play Vinyl Junkie Wednesday

Wednesday May 25th
7pm

Algernon Cadwallader
Snowing
1994!
Football Etc.
@ Vinyl Junkie

OK I know there are a lot of good shows out there this week that are ‘bigger” but one of the nice things about this column is stumbling upon a lot of nifty stuff you’d otherwise overlook and shine a light on it for people - Algernon Cadwallader is one of those things. Sure you can go see a bunch of over-produced Brits this same night but for my money Philadelphia, PA’s Algernon Cadwallader just sound like a hell of a lot more fun with their rambling limber guitars, just about to go out of tune vocals, and upbeat style.  Whatever the case, I’m totally loving on this 6-song EP from the band I just downloaded (and paid with real monies too).  Rock!

Now the rest of the week….

Thursday, May 19

Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven @ Fitzgerald’s - The CVP play their original swan song Key Lime Pie in its entirety while the other band with David Lowery in it, Cracker, play Kerosene Hat.  Make sure to check out our interview with CVB bassist Victor Krummenacher.

The Human Abstract, Scale The Summit, letlive, Across the Sun, Carry The Storm @ Numbers - THA will bring some heavy ass metal shit.  I hope you are properly prepared.

Cultured Cocktails Benefit for The Music Therapy Center of Houston, featuring Benjamin Wesley, Chase Hamblin, File Under Jeff, & Melissa Savcic @ Bar Boheme (307 Fairview; 5-9PM)  - Hyper talented Benjamin Wesley and the gifted Chase Hamblin lead of this solid night of music for a good cause.

Empress Hotel, Dangerous Ponies, Featherface, Harold Borup, DJ Hell Chaos @ Mango’s - Sweet melodic pop.  I’ve been on a Beatles kick lately and Empress Hotel hits that sweet spot perfectly.  If you like that Elephant Six stuff, you may dig this too.

LIGRE, The Escatones, Darwin’s Finches, Art Institute @ The Mink - I dunno much about LIGRE, but I can say the Escatones and Darwin’s Finches put on a hell of a show.

Changoman @ The Continental Club - Everyone’s favorite cumbia weirdos play the Continental.  Bring your dancing shoes.

Birdlips @ Super Happy Fun Land - Low key folky duo from Virginia and DC play the quite not low key SHFL.

Yanni @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Attention Saturday night PBS viewing audience the Greek one has returned.

DJ Lund/ZKent @ The Mink (front bar) - thar be DJs

Shotgun Party @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Fun Austin trio playin’ some excellent whoopin’ old timey music that touches on bluegrass, depression-era swing, and country.

Shotgun Party @ Cactus Music (5:30PM) - Preview the trio before the show at the Duck at Cactus with free St. Arnold’s refreshments.

Beau Hinze and the Backporch Shufflers (CD release)/Michael Wren @ Firehouse Saloon - Well now… lookee thar, local Country boys Beau Hinze and the Backporch Shufflers done gone and made themselves a CD.

Friday May 20

Fired For Walking, Dead Mineral (split-7″ release) @ Rudyard’s - two great bands, one 7″

Yo’ Jeans, featuring Glasnlost, DJ Linh Nguyen, DJ Mike C, & more @ Fox Hollow (4617 Nett St.) - Glasnost and some DJ’s Yo.

A Fistful of Soul @ The Mink - Mo DJs yo.

A Night of Brutality, featuring Spectral Manifest, Sculpting Atrocity, Injurious Physical Violence, The Nephilim Terror, & Venomous Supremacy @ Cains Ashes (2628 FM 1960 Rd. E) - Damn, so much sweet metal you may not live to see another day.

The Octanes (CD release), The Taildraggers, Zwee @ The Continental Club - Rockabilly CD release what what?

My Chemical Romance @ House of Blues (sold out) - Yuck

Steve Krase & The In Crowd @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - My girl took me to see Steve Krase and his bluesy harmonica led band the other day and it was a lot of fun…I was wasted as shit but it was fun.

The Avett Brothers, Langhorne Slim @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Concorde, North Carolina’s Scott and Seth Avett play some sweet folky music…you may have heard of them.
Commie Hilfiger, Antique Scream @ Fitzgerald’s - Is it sad that I find the whole Commie Hilfiger shtick funny.

Monte Montgomery, John Brewer @ Firehouse Saloon - Yeah yeah yeah I guess he’s a good guitar player but what the hell is with the hair here?????

Ronny Cox @ Anderson Fair - He played the villain in Robocop.  Now he does acoustic music.

Sonu Nigaam @ Arena Theatre - Nigaam is an Indian Playback Singer.  I know what you are asking - what the hell is that.  Well, you know those Bollywood films?  Yeah, well Nigaam does the singing while the actors lip sync.  Anyhow, hes like a big deal in Indian pop music and Indian cinema.

Satuday, May 21

Wanda Jackson, Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs @ Fitzgerald’s - Seriously this is an amazing pair up.  Jackson, the first lady of Rockabilly, and Holly Golightly and the Brokeoffs!!  I mean how cool is that?

Portugal. The Man, Telekinesis, Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ Fitzgerald’s - If that’s not your style and you want something a little more psych maybe upstairs at Fitz will be more your speed.  Check our own Paula Mejia’s interview of  PTM’s Zach Carothers.

Zine Fest Houston 2011 @ Khon’s Rooftop (4pm - 10pm) - music by Rotten Piece, Infant Mortality Rate, Organ Failure, Carlos Pozo, The Grass Skirts, and Muzak John. We interviewed Festival organizer Lindsey Simard too.

Amplified Heat, The Happen-Ins, The Ripe @ The Continental Club - You can’t beat Amplified Heat’s Hendrixed out 70’s arena rockin’ dudes from Austin.  Hell Big Daddy’s Assburn done named a hot sauce after them!

Kenny and the Spider, The Blue Hit, Days N Daze @ Last Concert Cafe - Kenny and the Spider…I’ll say serviceable Blues rock.

Clandestine @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Avast! They be from Texas but they play Celtic music.  ARRR!  (whops sorry about the pirate talk there)

Erykah Badu @ Arena Theatre - Dallas’ Neo-Soul Queen returns.

RAWWWR! Dance Party @ The Mink - I’ll see your RAWWWR! and raise you a MEOW!!

Liquid Casing @ Mango’s - Proggy dudes with a horn.

Super Diamond @ House of Blues - A Neil Diamond cover band?  Bah, boring!  Shut up and listen to me - a King Neil Diamond cover band would be awesome.  Dudes do the whole King Diamond thing - clothes, makeup, musical style-  but they do Neil Diamond songs!  Now that would be awesome.

Sean McConnell, Neil Austin Imber @ Firehouse Saloon - Texas rootsy dude who proudly points out that he worked with Meatloaf…The Meatloaf!

Texas Hippie Coalition, Souls of Agony, Crank Case, Fallacy @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Someone at the Houston Press was talking about beard rock.  This is grungy beard rock with one big fat ass lead singer.  Kind of over the top ridiculous in a good way.

Ray Bonneville @ Anderson Fair - Great voice with lovely guitar style.  Check out his 2008 album Goin’ by Feel - there’s some good stuff in there.

Owen Temple @ Cactus Music (1PM) - West Texas singer songwriter and St. Arnold’s Beer - now that’s a good pairing.

Sunday, May 22

The Death Set, WIN WIN @ Fitzgerald’s - to sum-up The Death Set in four words “Electronic Weirdos from Australia”.  I mean that in the best possible way.

The Kracker Nuttz @ House of Blues - The exiled 97.9 DJs take a spin at the House of Blues.

Silly Hat Night, featuring Blaggards @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - Oh great the drunken rousing Irish rock of the Blaggards is bad enough but now they add silly hats to the mix?  That’s going too far!

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Paul Wall @ Arena Theatre -
Wow, it’s been over 15 years since this Cleveland, Ohio band got signed by Eazy-E to Ruthless records.  I honestly didn’t know they were still around.

Dan Dyer @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Austin based singer songwriter with a soulful style.

Payton Rae @ Cactus Music (3PM) - 15 year old Hanna Montana wannabe who sounds like any other 15 year old girl with a karaoke machine except she has a gift - parents who have the money to indulge her dreams with Nashville hack writers and a management company.  It has the same creeper value you get from beauty pageants with under-age girls.  My suggestion to HPD - grab any male at Cactus who is not a parent and over the age of 18 and arrest them on the spot.

Monday, May 23

They Who Sound @ Avant Garden - This week TWS bring you a rare and never (ever) before screened video of Borbetomagus with Zhameela, William Hooker, Masahiko Kono, and Frank Balesteri at the “New Directions Festival” in Piermont, New York, 1986. There will also be live duo performances by David Dove/Y.E. Torres (ms. YET) and Ryan Edwards/Ayanna Jolivet Mccloud.

Here We Go Magic, Caveman @ Fitzgerald’s - Here We Go Magic is poppy indie rock that’s as cute as the name.

Caddywhompus @ Mango’s - These Houston expats are always so much fun.  Lot’s of energy and they always keep you on your toes.  Fun Fun Fun.

Primus, Dirtfoot @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Primus…so so many notes!

Tuesday, May 24

Stan Ridgway @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - I’m not gonna say it because it’s so obvious.  You know who he is and I’ll leave it at that.

Cola Freaks, Landfill @ The Mink - Denmark 70’s style punkers, Cola Freaks, drop in on the Mink.

Wednesday, May 25

White Lies, Asobi Seksu @ Fitzgerald’s - British indie rock. Meh, it’s OK I guess but like I said, I think Algernon Cadwallader sounds a  lot more fun.
