What is with the freaky bunny on the poster this year?  Man, I feel like I’m on bad drugs just looking at that!  Anyhow aside from getting some bad nightmares from that freaky bunny, this year looks to be a pretty solid line up and to be honest this is the first one in a while with a line up that I find engaging.  Slim Thug, Chairlift, Titus Andronicus, Lower Dens, Wild Moccasins, The Energy… and I don’t know who The Demonic Hen is but goddang that is a great fucking band name!  So if yr sitting out SXSW this year, this is a pretty good way to spend your Saturday.  Nice thing fro me is it’s right across the street from my apartment! So, HA!

Thursday, March 15

High on Fire, MonstrO, Venomous Maximus @ Fitzgerald’s - ROCK. Hard and Heavy just like you like it.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring JP & the Gilberts, My Amends, The Weekend Pilots, Take One Car, Clapperclaw, Harold Honey, & Great 85 @ Super Happy Fun Land - We spotlighted this last week and here is week two of the marathon overflow event.

Michael Schenker Group @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - 70’s stadium rock vet.

Kasabian @ Fitzgerald’s - Lancaster England Rock band. Not my thing to be honest.

Romeo Santos @ Toyota Center - singer specializing in the Dominican Republic’s genre of Bachata

Reckless Kelly @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (outside) - The duck will be rolling out a Big Top Tent for this one.

Linda McRae @ Anderson Fair - Canadian multi-instrumentalist ( she plays clawhammer banjo, acoustic guitar, accordion and porchboard stompbox to name a few) singer songwriter folkie now residing in Nashville but don’t hold that against her, she keeps her music as gritty as an Okie dustbowl.

Friday, March 16

Band Of Skulls, We Are Augustines @ Fitzgerald’s - English sometimes blues rock sometime just rock trio.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Hyena, Teen Girl Scientist Monthly, Starlight Girls, Ghost & Goblin, Great Valley, Katie Grace Henlow, & Screamin Eagle @ Super Happy Fun Land - more unrelenting overflow!!!!

SpokFrevo Orquestra @ Cullen Theater (Wortham Center) - OK OK I totally read that as Spork Fever but now it’s  SpokFrevo - Bag Band from from Brazil.

Michael Troy @ Anderson Fair - Massachusetts folkie

Friday - Saturday, March 16-17 – World Music 4 World Peace Festival, featuring LAGITAGIDA, Japanese Gum, Mr. Bleat, Panorama, The Freakouts, Daphne, I Am the Architect, Sunday Never Came, Peloton, & more @ The Cornerstone (1819 FM 565; Baytown) - OK you’ve got a prog metal band from Japan, an electronic band as well as an indie pop from Columbia playing a peace festival in Baytown.  Why is that so weird to me?

Friday - Sunday, March 16-18 – 2nd Annual Spring Break Music Unity Freedom Festival, featuring a bunch of bands @ Porretto Beach (Galveston) - Congratulations, you win the most cumbersome music festival name award. Not only that, they will have - I shit you not - sunrise drum circles.

Saturday, March 17

St. Patty’s Day at Fitz, featuring Crocodiles, Miniature Tigers, The Chain Gang Of 1974, The Watermarks, Geographer, Pretty & Nice, New York City Queens, Wails, Vipers, Pelviq Thrust, & DJ G-Wizz @ Fitzgerald’s - St. Patty’s day mayhem at Fitz

Neon Indian, Purity Ring @ House of Blues - Denton electronic rockers

Beans Barton & The Bi-Peds @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - The dude with the funny fish drawrings.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Caustic Casanova, The Prescription, Moonlight Bride, Kali Mutsa, & Hillfolk Noir @ Super Happy Fun Land - I told you SHFL wasn’t messing around with this overflow thing.

St. Patricks Day Drunk, featuring The Recently Deceased, Candy, The Ghost Storys, & Elyse @ Mango’s - Celebrate St. Patty’s with an arbitrary noise ordinance ticket.

Texas Massacre, featuring Bahimiron, Teratism, Adumus, Spectral Manifest, Cronophage, & Droomstygg @ The White Swan - For those needing something a bit more heady on their St. Patty’s day weekend.

Wendy Colonna @ Anderson Fair - Louisiana lass who plays old school soul with a Belgian backing band. There’s a lot of mileage in there.

Jagged Edge, Dru Hill, Next @ Arena Theater - Wow somebody is getting laid tonight!!  If this smoove R&B band won’t help you score, don’t worry because Jagged Edge’s got your back because they also sell a Love Remedy Kit!!! No seriously, check it, it’s described as  “The essential tools for love from Jagged Edge. Pure Soy Chocolate Candle in a Heart Shaped Tin. Hand Poured, Lead free cotton wick, Chocolate Massage Oil, Infused with pure organic cocoa powder, anti-oxidant, skin softening-paint on body with brush. Lavender Mocha Latte Bath Tea, made with all natural and organic ingredients.” DAMN!!!!!  Yes, that’s right - just check out the kit on the right there and weep because no matter what you do, your band now sucks - permanent!

Guy Clark, Chuck Allen Floyd @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - Guy Clark has been around so long that the cities he’s lived in alone are exhausting much less all the folks he’s worked with over the decades.

Wayne Toups @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - Cajun singer with a mullet that is registered a s a deadly weapon in his home state.

Sunday, March 18

Andrew W.K. @ Fitzgerald’s - You know that scene in The Jerk where Steve Martin is excited about the phone book?  That’s what Jacob Calle did when he heard AWK was coming to town.

Deafheaven, Odessa, Sleeping Ancient, Defending the Kingdom @ Mango’s - Here is a bad combination:  Awesome Heavy Metal and assholes who love calling the cops to abuse a poorly written and overly broad ordinance!

Youth Lagoon, Dana Buoy @ Fitzgerald’s - Erie, pretty, and dreamy stuff from one twenty-two year old Trevor Powers. I really dig it.

Asking Alexandria, We Came As Romans, Emmure, Dir En Grey, For Today, A Skylit Drive, blessthefall, Motionless In White, Trivium, I See Stars, The Amity Affliction @ Verizon Wireless Theater - I get a PR person telling me about WCAR.  I can’t stand the band but damn I’ve gotten so many e-mails that I rightly can’t ignore them.  Maybe if I mention it it will make them go away.  I guess score one for persistence.

HotChaCha, Electric Eel Shock @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - All ladies band with that 80’s flanged out new wave guitar sound.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring The Photo Atlas, The Shivas, The Gallery, Tamarin, Vio, Miré, Fenster, Eric Jennings, Glory Days, & Marvin and the Cloud Wall @ Super Happy Fun Land - yup, it is still going on.

The Violet Lights @ Mango’s - Mostly Harmless

The Black Belles, The Strange Boys, The Black Tabs @ Warehouse Live - All Girl Garage Goth band?  Someone get Jef with One F on the horn this instant!!!

Nneka, Bajah, The Dry Eye Crew @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) - Ya gotta laugh a bit when someone’s press release has corny lines like “When your heart is as big as your Afro” or even better “Afro-German warrior princess.”  Pretty silly copy to be sure but she’s actually pretty solid so don’t let that put you off.

Monday, March 19

They Who Sound featuring Jaap Blonk (Holland),  Jack Wright (Easton, Pennsylvania), David Dove, Sandy Ewen, Damon Smith (Houston) @ Avant Garden - Three words to describe Jaap Blonk “Dada sound poetry” err maybe this video might help explain it (By the way, if you miss him tonight Blonk will also be at Rice University on Tuesday)
