This Week’s Featured Show
Thursday June 7
Back in the late 90s there were a lot of cool bands roaming the vast plains of the Houston landscape. Some were trippy like Dry Nod, some were heavy like Dead Horse, and some were just big stupid-ass grungy mothers who put on a fun ass-whoopin’ live show like Bleachbath. The band built up quite a reputation during its time and released one album on the long defunct Sound Virus label but eventually the band just, like many bands, called it quits as the members moved on to different things. I’m not sure what the other members have been doing musically but you can still hear drummer Ricky Costello behind the kit of Project Grimm and even after all these years he still evokes gasps from people. Honestly, last time I saw PG at Rudz some guy was asking me, “Where the fuck did that drummer come from?!” Surprisingly, this reunion has been a somewhat low key affair and when I tell old school folks about the reunion show they all respond with, “What? Really? When? Where?” So naturally I’m gonna try to remedy that by dropping them as the featured show this week.
Thursday, June 7
Santigold, Charli XCX @ House of Blues -I’ve been a pretty huge fan of Santi White since I heard “Lights Out” a few years ago. The new album doesn’t give me that Holy Shit! moment of hearing that debut album the first time but White and partner in crime John Hill still manage to deliver some pretty solid stuff nonetheless and it has some great pop songs. I am not a fan of House of Blues but Miss White would definitely trump that bias.
Vivian Pikkles & the Sweethearts Über Alles, Tiziano Dominico, Psychic Palms @ Fitzgerald’s – Can you be punk, bad ass, adorable, and ass kicking at the same time? Vivian Pikkles proves it is quite possible.
Mentors, Potty Mouth, Psychosomatic, Humungus, H.R.A. @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor)-The men who brought you such immortal over-the-top verses as “It’s the sandwich of Love/ One Below and One Above” and “bend down and smell my anal vapors/ Your face will be my toilet paper” return. Sure, it’s the same joke over and over again but, like , GWAR, it’s a pretty funny joke.
