This Week’s Featured Show

Thursday June 16

Bootsy Collins @
Warehouse Live

Need I say any more?  It’s fuckin’ Bootsy!!  Bootsy is so badass that all you have to say is Bootsy and people will bow their heads in severe funky reverence.  This man has done more for the god-given American right to shake that ass, than anyone.  Seriously, that is what this entire country is about - “shakin’ that ass” was something the Anti-Federalists sought when they demanded a bill of rights.  They got their bill of rights but Madison was notoriously unskilled on the dance floor and blocked this inalienable right from being included.  Hell, the whole cold war was all about who had the better dance moves and the Apollo Program was all about taking the funk to outer space… OK, I don’t know what the fuck I’m talking about….the point is it’s Bootsy Collins and he will kick ass.  I mean GOOD GOD, just look at that picture!!!

Thursday June 16

Peter Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - Despite Gabriel ruining world music for some a whole generation and the likelihood that he’s years away from his most engaging years, it’s still nice to see that Gabriel is still out there trying new things with his old repertoire.

Cedric Burnside Project @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar- The grandson of the late RL Burnside.  I heard a track of his on KPFT on Sunday and it was pretty solid stuff.

Nicole Atkins, The Black Sea, Second Lovers @ Fitzgerald’s - I dunno I guess a lot of people like her stuff, but that video for Vultures from Nicole Atkins’ newest album bored me to tears.

Ninjasonik, Fat Tony, B L A C K I E, Simple Success @ Fitzgerald’s - Now for my money, if I were going to Fitzgerald’s on Thursday, this is the the show I’d be attending!!!

Crimewave, Secret Prostitutes, No Talk @ The Mink -Crimewave’s new record is pretty fucking bad-ass.  I meant to do an interview of them a while back but got totally sidetracked.  I need to follow up on that.  Anyhow, check them out.  The rest of this bill isn’t so bad either.

Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock) - I often give Dallas shit just for giggles but I don’t really mean it.  On the other hand, bands like Jonathan Tyler & The Northern Lights though make me kind of mean it.  Note to self: A song title like “Gypsy Woman” is a dead giveaway that crap will follow.

TheGoodLook Concert, featuring 2-Twenty, Doughbeezy, Ahead of Class, Cameron Wallace, Travis and Jason, & AC Gutta @ Mango’s - Hip hop business at Mango’s.

Anais Mitchell @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck -Vermont folkie from Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe label.

Gary Clark, Jr., The Bourgeois Gospels @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Austin Blues dude should do a nice job of ripping up Warehouse

Friday, June 17

The Dead Revolt, Featherface, Infinite Apaches @ The Mink - The Dead Revolt sound like they really dig that first Rush album.  You can take from that what you wish.

DJ Qbert, The Krackernuttz, Simple Success @ Fitzgerald’s -The legendary Filipino-American turntabelist should have you hoppin’ on a Friday night.

Runaway Sun, Bright Men of Learning @ Rudyard’s - If there is a textbook Americana show happening tonight, this is likely it.

Palestine Youth Cultural Tour, featuring The Palestine Strings & Danadeesh Dance Group @ Cullen Performance Hall (UH campus; 7PM) - Kind of self-explanatory really.

Really Old Airplanes, The Julys, Marx De Lux, Harold Borup @ Super Happy Fun Land - Really Old Airplanes are a lovely indie folk group from New York state on their first tour.

Joe King Carrasco & The Original Crowns, The Allen Oldies Band @ The Continental Club - Party Party Weekend.  Man that song was annoying.  If yr not familiar with it, check out the video below and you’ll understand.

YouTube Preview Image

Chango Man @ Cactus Music (5:30PM) -Free St. Arnold’s and Chango.

Like Moths to Flames, The Browning, Delusions @ Warehouse Live - LMF, Metal From Dayton, O-HI-O

Conflikto @ The White Swan - OK OK I have to admit there is something charming about this video….Not sure if it’s “good” but charming in its earnestness, sure.  http://youtu.be/-ZlSsl2wOIg

John Fullbright @ Heights Live! -Folikie Okie from Okemah armed with a solid voice and solid songcraft.

2Face Idibia, NCS Live Band, DJ SM95 @ Club Riddims (8220 W. Bellfort) - 2Face Idibia is Nigerian singer-songwriter, producer, actor, and all around Nigerian bad ass.

George Ensle @ Anderson Fair - This Texas Folkie has been around so long that Townes Van Zandt was droppin’ his name.

Eddie Money @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - I once saw this thing on TV with Eddie Money where he was in his house with some reporter where Eddie Money was not only hilarious and droll but it also had his daughter in the background rolling her eyes saying “Oh, GOD…Dad, really?!!!”  It doesn’t make me like Money’s music more or less but it did make me think that New York dude who sings out of the side of his mouth all the time is a pretty alright guy.

Saturday, June 18

Dollyrockers, A Thousand Cranes, Los Area 51, @ Lee & Joe Jamail Skatepark (7-9pm) - I love the skatepark just west of downtown.  It’s a really neat place and if you’ve not been, this may be a good way to introduce yourself to it.  Good bands, the weather won’t be so hot at this time, and it’s free.  Dig it!

The Elected, Featherface, Wails @ Fitzgerald’s - When they aren’t playing with Rilo Kiley, Blake Sennett and Daniel Brummel are part of LA indie poppers The Elected.  Cute stuff.

Tombs, Venomous Maximus, Omotai, Defending the Kingdom @ Mango’s - Holy crap this is gonna be fucking HEAVY as shit!  New York’s Tombs fucking kills and the rest of the line up gives no quarter either.  Solid shit from Opener to headliner!

Marcia Ball @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - Marcia Ball has been around with her whole Louisiana/Texas blues thing so long that it’s easy to take for granted but she is one musician who can claim to be a treasure of two states.

Poor Dumb Bastards, The Hot Things, Kansas City Faggots @ Rudyard’s - Poor Dumb Bastards…I mean that kind of says it all doesn’t it.

Billy Joe Shaver @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - Outlaw Country legend and apparently not a very good marksman, BJS returns.

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Guy Clark @ Crighton Theatre (Conroe) -Legendary folk musician Ramblin’ Jack Elliot is one very damn good reason to make the haul to Conroe.

Sunday, June 19

Tyagaraja @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) -I didn’t care for Tyagaraja Welch’s last band but his solo work does a much better job of showcasing his strengths as a vocalist and songwriter.

The Paperhead, The Mahas, The Examples @ The Mink -Psych pop from Nashville paired up with the Mahas?  Sign me Up!

Verbal Abuse, H.R.A., El Desmadre, Landfill @ Fitzgerald’s  - Along with bands like MDC, DRI, Really Red, and The Dicks, Verbal Abuse helped define Texas Punk…even if they did leave for the greener pastures of San Francisco early in their career.

The Red Elvises @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Rockabilly surf rockers with with a balalaika.  It’s gimmicky sure but kind of cute.

The Temptations @ Arena Theater - OK so Otis Wilson is the only original member remaining but still, it’s the fucking Temptations, man.  The fact that Wilson is still kicking that shit is awesome.

Monday, June 20

Khora, Nick Kuepfer, Lumens, SLTM, Christopher Cascio, Fiskadoro @ Super Happy Fun Land - Canadian experimental music exports Khora and Nick Keupfer bring their business to the happiest of lands.  Check out our interview with Nick Kuepfer if you haven’t done so already.

They Who Sound @ Avant Garden-This week’s imrpov/experimental showcase features Kyle Evans on electronics and Jason Jackson and Seth Paynter on saxophone.

Tuesday, June 21

Circa Paleo @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - “World Music” with a Capitol W.

Rebekah Todd, Tony Neurotic, Robin Kirby @ Super Happy Fun Land - Benson North Carolina Folk in the house.

Ramblin’ Jack Elliott @ Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe (Galveston)  -If you couldn’t make it out to Conroe for the show on Saturday, this is your second chance to check RJE.

Wednesday, June 22

Emmylou Harris @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Harris may be hitting her mid-60’s but she is still as bad ass as she was when she was kicking around with Graham Parsons.

Abolishment of Flesh, Insidious Decrepancy, Venomous Supremacy, Architects of the Unworthy, Sever The Silence @ Walter’s - Amarillo may not be the first place you think of when you think of metal but AOF from that city with the funny name can crush you with awesome riffs and hold their own with the best of them.

Gantez Warrior, El Mixicano, Common Spy @ Super Happy Fun Land - Gantez Warrior….OK, that song Chocolate Covered Ecstasy on their facebook?  Awesomely weird!
