This Week’s Featured Show

Friday, January 6

Wo Fat
The Grand Astoria
Project Armageddon
Sanctus Bellum
@ The Mink

OK, so I had to think hard about this one because of all that bad business a few months back when the Mink changed management and fired a lot of good people.  That was kind of an ugly transition for all involved and it left a lot of bad blood between the venue and its longtime customers.  So I’m sure my giving a Mink show the featured show slot will likely irk some folks and make me look like an asshole to others.  But I’m not here to take sides on that whole mess, I’m here the draw attention to shows that I think are kind of cool and this one is just too good to ignore.  I love good heavy stupid-ass chimp riffs and Wo Fat delivers in spades.  Someone on Hands Up Houston replied to a post about this show saying, “$10 for a band from Dallas that nobody’s ever heard of … good luck with that!”  Well, I’ll agree that most of you likely have never heard of Wo Fat but do yourself a favor and just check out some of their tracks on-line.  Sure the vocals could be better but, hell, Fu Manchu was never about the vocals either.  This band is the same thing - it’s all about the guitars.  The louder, sludgier, and stupider, the better.  So if you dig some of the local heavies like say Venomous Maximus  or Defending the Kingdom, you should seriously look into this band.  By the way, local acts Project Armageddon and Sanctus Bellum are no softies either.

Thursday, January 5

Fifteen Elephants/Fox & Cats/Robert Bradshaw Band/The PJ’s @ Mango’s - Two words for ya - Jam Band.

Friday, January 6

Elvis Night, featuring Southern Backtones & Craig Kinsey @ Fitzgerald’s - It’s Elvis birthday week.  What better time to pay tribute to the king?

Clandestine @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Celtic music with cowboy hats.

Open Mic @ The Jenner House (1619 Chapman  8-10PM) - Flautist Michelle Yom puts on an open mic.  She writes ” Anybody interested in sharing your stuff? Music/Dance/Video/Poetry/Anything…I especially encourage dance/movement and interactive video. We have a white screen and projector you can borrow. So let’s make a communal creative space together, where creativity and community are top priority. Every week until the end of May, at least”

Crizzly @ Fitzgerald’s -San Antonio DJ/ Producer will hit you with his crunkstep.

Richard Marx, Peter Cetera @ Arena Theater -I actually thought about making this the featured show just to be a dick.

Positive Disturbance, Evak-1, Babel Fishh @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) - Hip Hop show down NASA way.  While I have seen and can vouch for the first to acts’ awesomeness, I honestly can’t make hide nor hair of the headliner from their really tedious videos.  Hey, here is an idea guys; how about just playing your tracks or performing in your videos before I get so bored from watching random shots of a bar that I just give up?  Just a thought.

Saturday, January 7

Otenki, Another Run, Adelaine, Vice Verse Us, AThousandColours @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Wow, ummm Otenki.. Three words for ya - hair salon sponsorships.   The music is exactly what you would expect from those three words. Well they have a keytar…I’ll give them that.

Heights Vinyl In-Store Performance Series, featuring Sergio Trevino (mem. of Buxton) & Brent Nettles @ Heights Vinyl -Oh goddamn finally something awesome!!!!!  Buxton!  Buxton! Buxton head frontman Sergio Trevinio hits Houston’s newest vinyl shop and local folkie Brent nettles joins in.

Amplified Heat, Eric Tessmer Band @ The Continental Club - Blues rock with a mean kick from Austin.

A Room in the Body, Cozy Blankets, Asbestos, Cosmic Bug Loaf, DJ Weezar @ The Mink - Is it me or do these guys sound kind of Yach Rocky?

Josefus @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - the re-re-re -re-reunion… Actually there are a lot of more re’s in there.  Let’s just say that these classic Houston rockers have gotten together enough where it’s kind of not that unusual.  That said, the band’s 1970 album Dead Man is a Texas rock classic.

Sarah Jarosz @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck -The mandolin playin’ Jarosz album on Sugar Hill Records (not to be confused with the local studio of the same name) are nice I guess but a little too slick for my taste.  I much prefer the simple live performances with just her, her mandolin, a cello, and a fiddle.

The Blackhands @ Super Happy Fun Land - Acoustic punks from California who sing with an English accent.

Eric Hanke @ Heights Live! - Pleasant enough country singer songwriter from Austin.

Jackson Taylor @ Firehouse Saloon - There are so many questions I have after watching this band’s video but I get the feeling they are best left unanswered.

Peace News Fundraising Dinner with Clory Martin and Free Radicals -Vegetarian Indian Dinner by Jagjit (30 seats available) to help the HPN.  Seats are on a sliding scale of $10 - $40.  You can RSVP by e-mailing Nick Cooper at nickcooper@indymedia.org

thelastplaceyoulook, Faceplant @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) -  B L A C K I E is all caps with spaces while thelastplaceyoulook is all lowercase, no spaces.  Draw your own conclusions.

Willie Nelson & Family @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - WILLIE!!!!!!!

Sunday, January 8

Bright Men of Learning, Magnificent Snails, A Sundae Drive @ Rudyard’s - Oh sure, Sunday shows are a hassle given Houston is filled with working stiffs like me but despite that, I’m super psyched about seeing a BMOL show so early in the year.  So much so that I’m ready to come into work on Monday tired and cranky.  By the way.  Have you bought a copy of their last album?  If not, I am shaking my finger at you right now!!!

Monday, January 9

Creatures, Withdrawal, Vultures, Cast Away, They Lied, Nigh @ Vinyl Junkie (6:30-10:30PM; $10) -Creatures is some pretty sweet riffy stuff that reminded me of smoking a lot of weed and listening to Slayer in university.  Can’t type…must bang head!!

They, Who Sound  Chris Cogburn/David Dove/Ryan Edwards and Abel Cisneros/Jason Jackson @ Avant Garden (7-9pm) - The Impov/Jazz/Experimental series returns for a new year this Monday when Percussionist Chris Cogburn (Austin) teams up with trombonist Dave Dove and guitarist Ryan Edwards while saxophonist Jason Jackson  takes on percussionist Abel Cisneros.

Wednesday, January 11

Lukas Nelson & The Promise of the Real @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) - Blues based rock and roll from California.  OK , I guess but it’s kind of a slow week.
