This Week’s Featured Show

Marilyn Crispell

Friday, February 17
Nameless Sound, featuring
Marilyn Crispell & Henry Grimes
@ Cullen Hall (Univ. of St. Thomas campus; 8PM)

Saturday, February 18
They, Who Sound, featuring
Marilyn Crispell / Chris Cogburn / David Dove
& Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten’s Young Mothers
@ MECA (1900 Kane; 8-10PM)

This week Nameless Sound and They, Who Sound (stepping out of its Avant Garden home base) bring us a double shot of Jazz Pianist Marilyn Crispell.  Those of you who follow Jazz are likely already familiar with her work.  For those of you not familiar with her work I suggest a quick glance at her resume over the decades which includes her stint as a member of Anthony Braxton’s Quartet,  the Reggie Workman Ensemble,  Barry Guy’s New Orchestra,  the Henry Grimes Trio, the Europea Quartet Noir, and Anders Jormin’s BortomQuintet.  She’s also worked with composers such as composers John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Robert Cogan, Pozzi Escot, Manfred Niehaus and Anthony Davis.   Phew, and that little quick skip through her Wikipedia entry [1] only scratches the surface but sometimes it’s better to let folks hear the music rather than to try to convey why her work is so impressive so here is a solo performance of John Coltrane’s”Dear Lord”,  another of her with David Rothenberg, and one last one of her performing in the Anthony Braxton Quartet to do the explaining for me.

Cronophage, Peasantm, Sleuth, Noguey @ Vinyl Junkie (4202 E. Canal; 7PM, $4) - Again, sometimes it’s better to just let You Tube explain it

Blondes Make Better Victims, 23 Shades @ The Mink - Maybe you are right but I’d hope they’d make better bands! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Hounds of Jezebel, VerseCity, The Trends @ Fitzgerald’s - Sometimes a band’s bio is best read in “Serious Actor” mode and HOJ has a pretty good one for that.  Here, try reading this all dramatic like (remember to add lots of heady pauses) , “it’s their chemistry, even having only been together for a short time, that draws you to them. Their ability to connect. To Play. To Rock.  Is the undeniable……Hounds of Jezebel.”  Where is William Shatner when you need him?

Wolfgang Gartner @ House of Blues - House DJ at the House of Blues

Michael Fracasso @ Heights Live! ($12) - Austin singer songwriter.  What?  You were expecting Deicide?

Saturday, February 18

Handsome Ransom, Rivers, ST-37, Pleasure Shapes, Mellow Riot @ Fitzgerald’s - Local Venture Brothers fans are joined by Austin Psych rock gods, ST37 at Fitz.  Oh and it’s free.

Southern Backtones @ Cactus Music (1PM) - Backtones hot off the heels of their new release play at Cactus.

Silence on Hold, Soup, Only Beast, Journey Agents @ Fitzgerald’s -Silence on Hold umm well they don’t have much in the way of a facebook page and the website linked on that page is a google calendar, so your guess is as good as mine.

Disfrutalo!, Footpie, Cassette Tape @ Avant Garden - Proggy kids from Pasadena, Houston, and ….Baranoa?  Where is Baranoa?

3rd Annual Texas Yoga Conference, featuring Desert Dwellers @ University of Houston Recreation Center - Day 2 of the Yoga Conference.

The Swamps @ Avant Garden -sloppy punkers (and that’s not a dis)

Kelly Willis @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - the (now Austin based) longtime country music singer takes it a lot more easy these days but that kind of comes with having four kids to keep tabs on.

Susan Gibson @ Anderson Fair - The Wimberly Texas singer is likely best known for penning The Dixe Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.”

A Flock of Seagulls @ Cullen’s Live (Clear Lake) - Wow! Just wow!

Jucifer, Omotai @ Super Happy Fun Land -Holy crap.  One girl, one guitar, and so many amps!  Jucifer isn’t over the top when it comes to loud, they are over the top of over the top.

Hate Eternal, Goatwhore, Fallujah, Cerebral Bore, War Master, Christ Malformation @ Warehouse Live (Studio) -With band names like this, I think that this may be an Easy Listening show featuring Bread and Little River Band tribute bands.  Then again, I could be wrong.

Your 33 Black Angels @ Notsuoh - Psychedelic lads from Brooklyn. Good stuff.

Jimmy Webb @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - Webb is best know for writing hits for folks like Glen Campbell ( “Wichita Lineman”, “Galveston”), the 5th Dimension (“Up, Up and Away”), ” and Richard Harris (“MacArthur Park”). Those names should tell you the dude has been around a long time.

Tuesday, February 21

Agent Orange @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Long time surf punks for Cali.

Children Of Bodom, Eluveitie, Revocation, Threat Signal @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Yeah, yeah, I know COB has a hot-shot guitar player and they get all this love as a metal band but, I dunno the second those keyboards burst-in, it kind of messes the whole thing for me - admittedly, I’ve got a bias here.

Shinyribs @ Under The Volcano (2349 Bissonnet) -I beleive this is Shinyribs Russell of the Gourds. If I am wrong, please feel free to make fun of me in the comments.
