This Week’s Featured Show

Saturday, December 3

Big Daddy’s Hot Sauce Extravaganza
featuring
Venomous Maximus
&
From Beyond
@ The Orange Show
(7-10PM; $10)

OK, it’s a busy week but I gotta give it to this show here.  See, just last week I was just thinking that with all this lovely cool and crisp weather, seeing some bands at the Orange Show would be badass.  It’s like Big Daddy’s Assburn read my mind!  Freaky man!  You’ve got the heavy ass masters of metal Venomous Maximus… wait I mean heavy-ass masters of Metal not Heavy ass-masters…look, you know what I meant… the point is they play some heavy shit - the kind that is punishing and brutal.  That would be cool in and of itself but From Beyond is opening too and those guys don’t jack around either.  Jeez, seriously check out the mass of cabinets that back Robert McCarthy - it’s unreal!!!  So, recap -  at this point you’ve got great weather, two schweet bands, and the Orange show but no, wait, there’s more.  As Venomous Maximus Bassist and Big Daddy mastermind Trevi Biles explains it on his facebook page, “The $10 entry fee includes unlimited Lone Star Beer. Also tastings from Big Daddy’s Hot Sauces including the Orange Show Fire Blossom Special BBQ Sauce. Also Ladybird Gastrobus will be serving food including special Orange Show Fire Blossom BBQ dishes. VM guitarist Christian Larson will being DJ’ing metal all eve.” Oh sheeeeit!  Really, that’s obscene!   Four words - See you guys there!

The Tontons (tour kickoff), Equals, Holy Fiction @ Warehouse Live - The always classy Tontons get ready to hit the road again. Jazz Hands, Woo!

Dent-de-Lion, Steve Steele, Chairs @ Super Happy Fun Land - French dude who does a lot of stuff involving abstract percussive vocals sounds, bells, and other incidental sounds that can range from the chill to the noisy.

Will Hoge, Josh Hoge @ Fitzgerald’s - Will Hoge folky rock took a sideline after he found himself holed up for month in a hospital from a pretty brutal accident.  His new album is appropriately titled The Wreckage.

Turnin’ Headz: Blank Canvas, featuring Twank Star, Educated Minds, Young G Da Beast, & Wayword @ Check Other Outfitters - The monthly hip hop series gives you one last present before the end of the year.

Joe Bonamassa @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Guitar nerds, unite!

Monte Pittman, Dawn Over Zero @ House of Blues - Who is Monte Pittman?  Why Madonna’s longtime guitarist.  I know, I shrugged too.

Defending the Kingdom/——-/Dead Mineral @ Rudyard’s - Defending the Kingdom with heavy ass riffs.

A dream Asleep, American Fangs, Born Again Virgins @ Big Star Bar (free!) - Free Rock!  It’s kindo f like all that illegal downloading you do but without the guilt.

Centro-Matic, Spooky Folk @ Fitzgerald’s - Denton Alt Country side project from Will Johnson who you may recall from Monsters of Folk

Mojo Nixon & The Toadliquors/Dash Rip Rock @ The Continental Club - I would so vote for Mojo if he were running for president.  Just sayin;

Coffin Case/Jetspeed Live Holiday Fashion Show and Concert, featuring Rainchild, Downfall 2012, EraseTheVirus, Sol 34, Eliza Reign, & Knocturnal Maddness @ Warehouse Live - I’m only posting this because the poster was so corny that it made me snarf.

Ashleigh and Raven’s Metal Zone Showcase, featuring Shaving Susie, Downfall Rising, Strait Laced Scarlet, Wolfeblitzer, Swinging Teresa, & Sky Lounge @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Wow, Shaving Suzie.  Metal?  What kind of a name is that?  and for a metal band…OK, I gotta check this out.  Yeah umm OK just checked out their facebook page.  Doesn’t look very metal to me just a bunch of guys who look like the cast of Eastbound and Down.  But OK let’s see what the music sounds like….Oh wait I have to “like” it before I hear it?  Oh fuck you guys!  Weak.  OK I guess I gotta go on the terrible name and the bad glamour shot of your band - verdict?  Fail!  as metal?  Epic Fail!!

Nemontemi, Bagheera, Gods Of Death Screw, Chronicles (Rush tribute) @ The White Swan - YES, NOW THIS IS METAL!!!  Metal in spanish at that!!!  They even have a Rush Tribute band playing????? Yeah Yes!!

Tom Russell @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Tom Russell isn’t only a singer songwriter but also and artist and an author because you know some people are just dicks that way.

Dir en Grey, The Birthday Massacre @ House of Blues - Japanese Metal!!!

Red Fang, Ghost Town Electric @ Fitzgerald’s - if relapse records means anything to you, you will know what to expect from Red Fang.

Hits from the Hill CD Release, featuring Allen Oldies Band, Roy Head, Don Sanders, Champion Sisters, Chet Daniels, Kenny Cordray’s Love Street, John Evans, Glenna Bell, & Row Zero @ The Continental Club (2-6PM) - nice little event being thrown together by Sugar Hill to benefit the Musicians’ Benevolent Society.  The show itself is free but sales of the Hits from the Hill CD will go to the charity.  Pretty cool.

Koffin Kats @ Mango’s - psycho billy band.

Big Sean, Cyhi the Prince, Shawn Christopher, DJ Mr. Rogers @ Warehouse Live - Ya gotta love Big Sean’s gumption.  Kanye West was being interviewed at a radio station so he just got up and headed over to freestyle for him.  West at first was reluctant but gave in. By the end of it West was bobbin’ his head and two years later he gets signed by West.

Underground Hip Hop Show 5, featuring Analyst, PHT & Arch Angel, Majick, T-Slim, Ch3vy, Big Joe, iAmHead, Dez & Swoe, J Mak The Monster, t.h.e. MisFit Crazy 8, NY Gee, Anjo, Texas Heat, Certifly, J. Bronson, & Shock Tha World Ent. @ Jet Lounge - More underground hip hop for your week.

Pat Martino @ The Continental Club - You know it’s hard enough to learn the guitar and be as good as jazz dude Martino but it’s quite another thing to have to re-learn your instrument after suffering amnesia from a brain aneurysm as Martino did in the 80s.  Happily Martino did just that and has been non stop since.

The Wood Brothers, Carsie Blanton @ Fitzgerald’s - Chris Wood of Medenski, Martin, & Wood’s little side project with his brother Oliver.

Hadden Sayers @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - long time local blues dude at the duck

Monday, December 5

The Throne (Jay-Z & Kanye West) @ Toyota Center - Who are these guys?  Never heard of them.  I think they are a polka act from Winnapeg.  But I could be wrong.  Maybe you guys have heard of them in some underground magazine or something.

Mayhem/Keep of Kalessin/Hate/Abigail Williams/Venomous Supremacy @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) - Man, the whole Mayhem story is just nutters.  First off you get a guy that goes by the name Dead who offs himself and a band member who goes off and takes pictures of the dead corpse.  Add in rumors of brain stew and bones made from the dead Dead and well, it’s wack.  If you’ve never read “Lords of Chaos”, I highly recommend it.  Pretty crazy stuff but hey it’s Metal.  Pretty awesome metal at that so if there is a reason to head down to see a show near where I grew up to see a show, this is likely it.

Tuesday, December 6

Noise For Toys: A Musical Fundraiser for the USMC Toys for Tots Program, featuring Patrice Pike, Jack Saunders, Paige Lewis, Mike Stinson, Kimberly M’Carver, Libby Koch, John Evans, & Men of Moores @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck (6:30PM) - Sweet cause and some good folkies.

Wednesday, December 7

Cave, Balaclavas, Wicked Poseur, Weird Party @ Fitzgerald’s - Oh shit this is such an amazing line up.  Cave’s droney krautrock shit, Balaclavas’ gothic coolness, Wicked Poseur’s epic cool, and Weird Party who is just unrivaled in the live arena.  It’s like the justice league of line-ups this week!
