OK so it was a toss up between quite a few shows and I finally whittled it down to either highlighting this one or Bummerfest and so I figured I’d pick one show to highlight based on the better poster.  Now obviously one had more of a professional look but I finally went with something even more arbitrary and shallow  - whoever had the worst band name lost (sorry Bummerfest).  But yeah, this here is one bad-ass line-up that, if I have my facts right (and I always do), will help fund some cool Buddhist Kung-Fu 36-chambers shit.  Lots of cool tests, and that freaky room with the Kung-fu you can’t handle.  Dude, it’s gonna be cool just like the Shaw Brothers film!!!!!

Thursday, August 11

The Tontons(tour kick-off) , Sun Hotel, Ancient Cat Society @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Houston’s classiest band, The Tontons, get ready to kick-off their “Oh my God are we really going to be driving around in this heat for the next month” tour.

Tax the Wolf, Zorch, Featherface, Sunrise and Ammunition @ Mango’s - Tax the Wolf killed a few weeks back at the Roky Moon and Bolt “American Honey” album release party.  See them again.

Houston Fringe Festival, featuring Carpe Geekdom, Audacity Theatre Lab, & Ryan Cockerham @ Super Happy Fun Land - Two weekends of theatre, film, dance, music and visual arts kick off tonight.

County Bucks, The Beans @ Fitzgerald’s - Heavy riffin’ band from Austin.

Merle Haggard @ Stafford Centre (Stafford) - The Okie From Muskogee himself.

Ian Moore & The Lossy Coils @ The Continental Club (Thursday 11 and Friday, August 12) - Well respected Austin guitar dude plays two nights on Main Street.

Automatic Thrill (CD release)/Bexar County Bastards/Donkey Punch @ Rudyard’s - You gotta love a band that describes themselves as Punk Rock Iron Maiden.  Well done, Automatic Thrill.

Matt Harlan, Brian Hudson @ Heights Live! - Norwegian death metal artist Matt Harlan will burn down some churches and kill somebody I’m sure….oh wait he’s a folkie?  Oh, my bad.

Satuday, August 13

The Mathletes vs. Houston Record Release Show, featuring The Mathletes, Giant Princess vs. Babyshowers, B L A C K I E vs. The Wiggins, Keith Reynolds vs. The Sparkle Ponies, Hearts of Animals vs. Christopher Cascio, & Fishboy @ Fitzgerald’s - This is also a pretty high up there show but, damnit, I already gave Joe two days of coverage.  I gotta ease back a bit and give someone else some coverage but it’s a stellar line-up and I hope to attend.

Bummerfest, featuring The Fleshlights, Burning Itch, Secret Prostitutes, Muhammad Ali, White Crime, Noguey (cassette release), The Mahas, Hamamatsu Tom & the Waugh Bridge Bat Colony, Crime Wave, Cop Warmth, Sleuth, Guwange, & Clockpole @ The Ponderosa (1503 Nance; 6PM-12AM, BYOB) - This was in the running for featured show but sorry guys blame it on Austin’s Fleshlights  (terrible name!!!)  Don’t let that bum ya out though, the Houston bands are aces!!!

Rock the Bells, featuring Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, & Mobb Deep @ House of Blues - I still want one of those Ghostface Killah dolls they made a few years back.  Those were cool!!!

Honky/Amplified Heat @ The Continental Club - Austin double dose of Pinkus and RAWK (yes, in all caps)

Dollyrockers @ Rudyard’s - Care for some Rockabilly with your rudzburger?

Stevie Nicks, Michael Grimm @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - Go Stevie!

Christopher Cross, Robert Frith @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) - In the world of Yacht Rock, Cross stands like a god!

Against The Grain, Counterfeit I, Chelsea Hotel, Dead Roses, The Wrong Ones @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar - Detroit and Chicago punks are joined by a triumvirate of local punks.

Harold Borup, Rivers, The Dead Revolt, Giant Battle Monster @ The Mink - Alvin’s Harold Borup sounds like a lot of fun with its garagey organ,  jangley guitars, and “off key” singing.  Thumbs up!

World Club @ Super Happy Fun Land (11:30PM) - After Fringefest at SHFL you have these guys…lots of dots and loops.

Sunday, August 14

Qwazaar, He.llsent, Major Rayne, Infidelix, Lacy Lippz @ The Mink - Hip Hop on the lord’s day? Sure, god’s cool like that.

Robert Bradshaw Band, Rivers, HeadMINE, The PJs @ The Mink - “Check us out on the 17th before our drummer goes off to college for an edumacation” With a pitch like that, how can I not mention this show?!!!

You, Me and Us, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Arcane Alchemy @ Super Happy Fun Land - You, Me, and Us is some pretty damn endearing garage pop from California.  High to the high recommended.
