Well the Continental Club is back at it with this year’s edition of their annual Rockabilly fest. They promise Rockabilly in all its flavors and some country bands too, DJs, dance contests, burlesque, BBQ, pin up contest, and car show because why the hell not, ya know?  The genre still has its raving devoted fans and for Houston fans this is kind of their Rockabilly Hajj and accordingly the Continental Club tends to go all out when they do these.  So if you have $40 in your pocket and three days (though there are tickets for individual days),  you can get more than your share of reverb drenched guitars, double basses and dudes with pompadours.

Thursday, July 19

Spain Colored Orange, Handsome Ransom, The Anthemeers, Old Old Jesus @ Fitzgerald’s – Houston’s Horniest psychedelic band at Fitz.

The Pinkerton Thugs, The Scarred, Violent Affair, The Ballistics @ Mango’s –Why mention that these punks are from Kennebunkport, Maine punk because Kennebunkport is just fun to say aloud.

Michale Graves, Spastic Fit, The Bad Drugs, Mike Terror @ Walter’s –For folks like me, there is only one Misfits and that’s the one with Danzig but ya know, if Graves’ stint works for you, I’m cool with that.

Percy Sledge & Band @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) – By now, When a Man Loves a Woman is so played out by Romantic Comedies that it’s easy to forget what a bad ass Percy really is.

Friday, July 20

The Toadies, Helmet, Ume @ House of Blues –Toadies are OK, I’m cool with the first Helmet album, but Ume.. now that is the shit!

The Ex-Optimists, The Busy Kids, The Wrong Ones, Mike the Engineer @ Mango’s ($5) – College Station kids with a huge 80’s college rock fixation that actually is pretty solid

MNWA, Moths, Old Yeller, Neptunes Explode @ Notsuoh – Screamy emo dudes from Maryland

Flo Rida, Cee Lo, Kirko Bangz, B.O.B. @ Toyota Center – No dis to Tramar Dillard, but that has to be the laziest stage name in rap.

Barenaked Ladies, Blues Traveler, Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Cracker @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion – Cracker cool but the rest of this I can’t quite get with.

We Were Wolves, Purple, The Dead Revolt @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor; $6) – Rockin’ kids from Beaumont

Giant Fight, The Young Leaves, Penny Arcade @ Rudyard’s –Fun silly rockin’ stuff that falls between the garagey and the punky

Champions Kids Camp Benefit, featuring Jimmy Nash @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) –Benefit for a kids camp that focuses on kids with traumatic injuries. For more visit http://championskidscamp.org/

Friday - Sunday, July 20-22 – Fever Art Festival, featuring Purple, Space Villians, We Are Wolves, Kentucky Dirty, Tiziano Dominico, DJ Francis , Purple People, Swimsuit Edition, Flcon Fcker @ Sarita Ackerman Modern Art (7320 Ashcroft Dr., Suite 209) - I’m a little confused on this event but it seems to be some kind of thing with Art, Fashion, and Music event thing goin’ on in the East End.  Some good folks in the music line up so sure why not, ya know?

Saturday, July 21

Giant Battle Monster, Female Demand, Feuding Fathers, Zoofeelia, P.L.X.T.X. @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) – GBM returns and they really wish there were more places to flier in Houston.

Eagle Claw, From Beyond @ Rudyard’s – Heavy ass music from to heavy ass bands. So bummed that Richard Beeman is so smart he’s going to move to California to do that University thing. Go see FB while you still can.

Watson Gallery 3-Year Anniversary Party, featuring Robin Kirby Band @ Watson Gallery (1302 Nance) – Happy birthday.

Joe Cocker, Huey Lewis and The News @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion – 60’s era British belter and an and a 80’s San Francisco pop phenomenon – why does that bill strike me as really weird? Still, I gotta give it up to Joe and Huey for hangin’ in there and still being able to play a big venue like CWMP.
