This Week’s Featured Show:

Thee OhSees
Bare Wires
Surf City
Thursday March 10th
@ Fitzgerald’s

OK so SXSW is making it a really tough week to highlight just one show but I gotta go with The OhSees. My favorite description of The OhSees came from Steve Leggett at AllMusic who decribed them as “the Mamas & the Papas run through a seriously bent garage blender“. That sums it up just perfectly. If you love poppy garage rock with just enough weirdsies sprinkled on top to make it interesting then this is your show this week. And Oakland’s Bare Wires
not only shamelessly cop from early 70’s glam like Slade and Gary Glitter but they also hot tubbed with Jay Reatard.

Thursday 10 March

The Future In Stereo, featuring The Manichean, Fat Tony, Zeale, The Black & White Years, Glasnost, The Live Lights, Gatlin Elms, Young Girls, Satin Hooks, Amorette, Hollywood F.L.O.S.S., iLL Liad, DJ A&A, Invisible Friends, & Modern Touch @ Stereo Live – Houston and Austin indie rock and hip-hop come together for an exhaustive night of music.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring What Cheer? Brigade, Vockah Redu, & The C-4 Band @ Super Happy Fun Land – I love the New York Times blurb for What Cheer? Brigade – “Thrillingly competent” . Wow! Well, I guess that is one way to sum up a 19-piece brass band from Providence, Rhode Island Our that mixes Bollywood, The Balkans, New Orleans, Samba and Hip-Hop.

General Bye Bye, Megafauna, Electric Attitude @ Rudyard’s – With a name like General Bye Bye you know this band’s first language isn’t English. They’re actually French and they mix a little psych a little krautrock and some indie pop which is perfect if you are ADD.

Scared To Dance, featuring Mr. Castillo & Hit It or Quit It! @ The Mink – DJ. The Mink. It’s kind of self-explanatory

Marty Stuart @ Dose Doe Coffee Company – Holy shit check out Marty Stewart’s hair!!!!

Friday 11 March

Ryan Scroggins and the Trenchtown Texans, Picture Book @ The Continental Club – Ska meets 60’s tribute band.

Delicious Milk, Commie Hillfiger, ThunderkunT, Vincent Priceless, Skeleton Dick @ Fitzgerald’s (free!) - Don’t go to this!  Omar Afra is Delicious Milk – he will warp your mind and kill your first born! Run! Run!

South By Due East, featuring Plump, Free Radicals, Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies, Don Sanders, Neal Ford, Fondue Monks, Muzak, Mr. Blacc Sheep, Bigga Starr, Six Gun Sound, Alligator Assassins, Spunky & The Wankers, & more @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar (5PM-1AM; free!) Guy Schwartz & MArlo Blue’s SXDE tries to shine a little light on the Houston scene. Given the paltry showing we’ve had this year (you know it’s bad when the Houston lists going around pad the list with ex-pats).

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Ugly Elephant & Shut Up Sidney @ Super Happy Fun Land – Ugly Elephant = Funk Jazz from Austin

Saturday 12 March

Spring Forward Music Festival, featuring What Made Milwaukee Famous, Ume, Bright Light Social Hour, Absolute Pistol, Alkari, Another Run, Autumn Owls, Covington, Dirty Dishes, Electric Attitude, Frank Smith, Grandfather, Grass Is Green, The Journey Agents, Lights Of Attica, Mobley, The Murdocks, Ozeal, The Rocketboys, Supervolcano, Viva Viva, Winter Wallace, Rivers, The Dead Revolt, & more @ Groundhall/ECHO – Ume is on this bill – that is good enough for me.

South By Due East, featuring Chango Man, Eric Demmer & The Sax Dawgs, Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies, Poopy Lungstuffing/Blue Peterschnitzel, Wasi, Zin, & Ilya, Jambolism, Chase Hamblin, Kinetic, The Lotus Effect, The Texcentrics, Mojofromopolis, E. Nicole Band, Larry Sepulvado, The Rapture, Kid Red, & more @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar (3PM-1AM; free!) – See Above.

Los Skarnales @ Fitzgerald’s – Ska!!!!!

Soja @ Fitzgerald’s – Reggae from Washington DC.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Meg and Jean & The KFB, Joe and the Jungle, & 28 North @ Super Happy Fun Land – If you’ve been hankerin’ for some banjo and washboard music, Meg and Jean will sate your craving.

James McMurtry @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – Larry’s acclaimed Texas Folk singer son.

Randy Travis @ Nutty Jerry’s– While famous for his role of Billy Wheeler in Matlock – The Big Payoff, Travis also has a little known but promising career in country music.

Sunday 13 March

Music for Silent Films, featuring Chris Becker @ FrenetiCore (5102 Navigation; 7PM, $7) – Becker improvises to silent filmsmade by friends and colleages. Caroline Sessions debuted many of the films that you will see here tonight but since it is improvised each show is different.

Hugo, Pearl and The Beard, Joe Mathlete @ The Mink – OK I really can’t recommend either Hugo or Pearl and the Beard but Joe Mathlete – that’s another story. He’s a Houston institution and his shows are always a blast.

South By Due East, featuring Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies, Overeasy, Dane Sonnier, Orange Is In, Petesimple, Zwee, Yokomono, Lani Ford, Rozz Zamorano Trio, Willie B, Patrice Pike, The Scars Heal In Time, Myrna Sanders, Tyagaraja, Texas Johnny Brown, & Crown @ Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar (3PM-12AM; free!) – See above.

White Mystery @ Mango’s – This chicago duo play garage rock with huge tufts of red hair. Oh crap I gotta send them some questions for that interview.

Belphegor, Blackguard, Gigan, Neuraxis, Venomous Supremacy @ Numbers – Black metal from Salzburg leads the pack here. This should fucking own!

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Standing Shadows & MiniBoone @ Super Happy Fun Land – Mostly Harmless.

Hadag Nahash @ Warehouse Live (Studio) – Israeli Hip/Hop funk.

Monday 14 March

Parts & Labor, Pterodactyl, Prince Rama, Amen Dunes @ Fitzgerald’s – Holy crap there’s a new Part And Labor album that comes out on March 8th (that’s the day I’m write this). Neat! I haven’t heard anything from these guys since 2008 but I saw them during the Mapmaker tour and they were awesomely noisy and fun.

Davila 666, The Mahas, Funboys @ Rudyard’s – Fucking awesome garage shot from Puerto Rico. Highly recommended.

Eloe Omoe (Tim Leanse and Sam Rowell), David Dove/Sandy Ewen @ Avant Garden - The They, Who Sound series brings you some of the best improv Jazz, experimental, psychedelic…well they kind of cover a lot of stuff. It’s just cool and intimate goodness.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring The Demon Beat, Blastoids, The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, Janka Nabay, Rich Aucoin, Aficiondo, Lost Coves, & The Fireship @ Super Happy Fun Land – OK let me just say right now The terror Pigeon is a great band name!

The World We Knew, It Prevails, Betrayal, Sovereign Strength, 1972 @ Numbers – More metal!!!

Xray Eyeballs @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) – Noisy garage pop

Adam Arcuragi, Giant Cloud @ The Mink – Really really lovely Americana stuff.

Toro Y Moi, Cloud Nothings, Reading Rainbow @ Fitzgerald’s - Funky South Carolina chillwave.

Tuesday 15 March

Now, Now Every Children, Santah, Walking Oceans @ The Mink – If you haven’t heard Now, Now Every Children’s album Cars a few years ago I highly recommend checking out. Just solid good femme fronted indie rock! I’d totally go to this if I wasn’t going to KISS.

Small Black, Sun Airway, Eternal Summers, Teletextile @ Fitzgerald’s – Oh old school Casio keyboard sounds, you are so awesome. Small Black do you right.

White Hills, Birds of Avalon, The Diamond Center @ The Continental Club – I’m gonna guess, given the stoner baiting guitar solos on White Hill’s newest record, that there was a lot of herb burning in the studio. We may have to ask them that when we do that interview next week.

Franz Nicolay @ Cactus Music – Former keyboard accordionist of the Hold Steady at cactus.

Bramble, Cory Derden, Kim Champion, Tim Banjo @ Sedition Books (901 Richmond; 7-11:30PM) – Bramble..ya gots yr accordion, ya got’s yer accordion, ya gots yer harmonies, and ya gots yer anarchy! WOO!

My Cousin The Emperor, The Small Ponds @ Big Star Bar – Nice country and folk inspired indie rock from MCTE perfect for a firepit and some beers.

The Ready Set, Allstar Weekend, The Downtown Fiction, We Are The In Crowd, You, Me, and Everyone We Know @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - OK so the Ready Set are pretty awful if you are over I’m guessing Nickelodeon ‘s target market but hey when was the last tiem your band had a fan write “im soo pumped! xD Jordan is sooo hott!” on your blog? I thought so.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Rooftop Vigilantes, SCHOOL, Greg Smith and The Broken English, Chris Bathgate, Country Mice, Joel Streeter, Secret Mountains, Lands & Peoples, Boats, & Small Houses @ Super Happy Fun Land – Seroegum’s indie pop gets nods from both NPR and Steroegum.

Sugar and Gold, Yip Receiver, Sun Hotel @ Fitzgerald’s – Sugar and Gold’s Disco makes me want to insert some kind of cocaine joke here.

Drawn From Bees @ Cactus Music (5:30PM) – Can’t say I’m particularly blown away by these Aussies but hey free St. Arnold’s beer!

Beppe Gambetta @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – Nice acoustic finger picking di Italia.

Wednesday 16 March

Damien Jurado, Viva Voce, David Dondero, Franz Nicolay @ The Mink – Seattle’s Damien Jurado has been making lovely intimate folky music for years. It’s a long way from his cassette releases and Sunny Day Real Estate’s Jeremy Enigk nudged Sub Pop to release his first recordings but his music stil resonates with a a lovely humanity that is just as fresh today as it was back then.

Say Hi, Blair, Yellow Ostrich @ Fitzgerald’s – Is it me or does Eric Elbogen (aka Say Hi) look like the perfect guy to take Max Von Sydow’s role if they ever make a Black Hole remake?

OMD @ House of Blues – The 80’s English synth poppers and Molly Ringwald background music return.

The Fleshtones, Ivan Jillian @ The Continental Club – The Fleshtones have been doing garage goodness for so long that I remember when singer Zaremba used to host MTV’s Cutting Edge.

Uh Huh Her, Diamonds Under Fire @ Fitzgerald’s –Uh Huh Her…unicorns in their videos??? Fucking righteous!

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Secret Society In Smaller Lies, Naked Gods, Invisible Hand, Greymarket, Luster, Columboid, & Spirit Family Reunion @ Super Happy Fun Land – Still more bands coming through Houston on their way to/from SXSW.

Scaphe, Gnawed, PLF @ Vinyl Junkie – This should be a brutal set. Get the hell out to this east end for this.
