Show of the Week

Periphery
Floating Man
The Circadian Effect
@
House of Creeps
(Free)

This is pretty awesome especially if you dig metal. So, what happens when ass whoopin’ Maryland metal band Periphery finds itself with a canceled show at Warehouse live? Easy, just DIY it!  Houston’s House of Creeps graciously stepped-in and lent the band a hand and put-on an all-ages free show at their lovely home (of course they will pass the hat and you should definitely pitch-in). So even with all the great shows this week, how can we not give HOC a shout-out for being so cool?  Bring your best Dio metal horns and expect that tinnitus to get a bit worse after tonight.

Now for the rest of the week

Thursday, March 3

The Walkmen, The Head & The Heart @ Fitzgerald’s – Sony may have rolled out the last walkman this year but these New York Indie Rockers are still goin’ strong.

Canned Acoustica II, featuring The Tontons, Roky Moon & BOLT, Come See My Dead Person, Southern Backtones, Finnegan, Lee Alexander, Young Girls, Poor Pilate, & Erin Rodgers @ Warehouse Live (Green Room; admission is 2 cans of food) – This is the second installment of this Warehouse Live series where local bands strip down to their acoustic skivvies.

Alejandro Escovedo @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) – To say San Antonio native Alejandro Escovido’s been around the block is putting it mildly. He opened for the Sex Pistols in the 70’s punk band The Nuns, root’s rocked it up with Rank and File, the long-gone magazine No Depression praised his solo work endlessly, and let’s not forget that his niece is even Sheila E.

Jucifer, The Midnight Ghost Train, Kairos, Dead Roses @ Super Happy Fun Land – How long has Jucifer been making loud ass sludge rock? Well when they first started, Bush Sr.was making way for Clinton, David Koresh was holed up in Waco, the original Doom was the talk of the gaming world, and, Varg Vikernes was arrested and charged with the murder of Euronymous .

Linkin Park, The Prodigy @ Toyota Center – Hey, remember when these bands were good? Yeah, me neither.

Grant Watts & the Old Family, Grizzly, The Last Cigarette, Hiss & Hum @ Echo – Americana for your Thursday night.

Trashcan Sinatras @ Fitzgerald’s – Scottish light pop band.

Turnin’ Headz @ The Mink – The Mink’s free style, hip hop, and rap showcase.

Impresario, Impresario! @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – The Moores Opera Center at the University of Houston does a short Mozart comedy at the Duck- first in the traditional format and the second with a more modern Supranos setting.

Friday, March 4

Indian Jewelry, Cave, Balaclavas, Sic Alps, DJ Chemical Mange @ Fitzgerald’s – Indian Jewelry is one of those bands that can do no wrong so just go and check it out.

Omotai, We Were Wolves @ The Mink – Omotai is to metal what Schwarzenegger is to Conan.

O’Doyle Rules, Muhammad Ali, football, etc, Assemble the Skyline @ Houston House of Creeps – Another solid line-up here as well. If you missed out on our interview with Football, etc. you should check it out.

Paul Wall @ House of Blues – Yes, I believe you can still order grills from Mr. Slayton.

Benefit for Joey, featuring skyblue72 @ Rudyard’s – Skyblue 72 put on a benefit to help their friend who lost a lot in a recent fire.

Pinhed, Bound in Flesh, Cerebral Down, The Brace, Anguish in Exile, Nintendra @ Warehouse Live – Rosenberg’s Pinhead leads a night of Metal.

St. Lawrence String Quartet @ Zilkha Hall (Hobby Center) – This would be the opposite of the show above.

Hayes Carll @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) – Hayes Carll show #1 of the week

75th Birthday of Radio Celebrity Al Caldwell, featuring Chuck Berry @ Nutty Jerry’s – World famous guitar master Chuck Berry is a Rock and Roll legend and also the man who made coprophilia a household word.

Saturday, March 5

Old 97′s, Those Darlins @ House of Blues – Olds 97’s are pretty solid but I gotta say the opening band is pretty badass too.

By the End of Tonight, B L A C K I E, Young Mammals, Caddywhompus @ Fitzgerald’s – Phenomenal line-up with newly reunited BTEOT leading the pack.

Digable Planets, t.h.e. Misfit Crazy8 @ Numbers – Step back to the 90’s at numbers.

Rwake, Defending the Kingdom, The Roller, Big Fiction, Odessa, The Burden, Turbo Krieg, Peloton, Co-Pilot, Cavernous, Ghost Town Electric, and American Sharks @ The Mink – Jeez them is a lot of bands. This starts at 7:30 so don’t dilly-dally.

Benefit for Zain Oliver, featuring The Abyss, The Hates, Harem Fest, & more @ BFE Rock Club – Zain Oliver has a pretty awesome picture of his broken arm - he’s all smiling and cool looking with his arm all zig zaggy – which makes you kind of admire his spunk. Unfortunately, a break like that ain’t cheap and so a few bands are getting together to help out him and his family with the financial burden.

Orange Is In, Lee Alexander, Sheila Swift @ Rudyard’s – Orange Is In? OK, I gotta say Rudzburger. And John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist Lee Alexander? I’m guessing fish and chips.

D.R.U.M., Spoonfed Tribe @ The Continental Club – Percussion gods D.R.U.M. bang it out at the CC.

Hayes Carll @ Cactus Music (4:30PM) - Hayes Carll show number 2 for the week.

Young The Giant, Kitten @ Fitzgerald’s – Young The Giant – a nice indie pop band with direct article issues

Hayes Carll (CD release), Shovels and Rope @ Firehouse Saloon - Hayes Carll show number 3 for the week.

Ray Wylie Hubbard @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – Jerry Jeff Walker may have made it famous but it was Hubbard who penned the classic “Up Against the wall, Redneck Mother”

Bobby Womack @ Arena Theatre – You may have heard of Mr. Womack. The Valentinos, Sam Cooke’s guitarist, and some smoove-ass 70’s R&B and Funk…any of that ring any bells with you?

Sunday, March 6

The Slackers, Ryan Scroggins & The Trenchtown Texans @ Fitzgerald’s - Jamaican ska/reggae inspired The Slackers share the stage with Houston’s own Ryan Scroggins.

Down, Cavalcade, Warbeast @ Warehouse Live- Louisiana Stoner/Doom Metalheads unite!

nmperign, Jason Lescalleet @ Labotanica (2316 Elgin; 8PM) – OK I’m pretty stoked about this because horn duo nmperign teaming up with loop master Jason Lescalleet is just a recipe for some fucking cool ass ant music.

The Caroline Sessions, featuring Alicia Marie Gianni & Melissa Savcic @ Caroline Collective (2-5PM) – kick back with some nice weather and music at Caroline Collective.

Anthony David @ Numbers – President Obama as a fan of neo-soul man Anthony David.

Yes @ House of Blues – I have to admit I like some of the earlier yes stuff but yeah there is a lot of crap out there from these guys too.

Tuesday, March 8

Sideshow Tramps @ Fitzgerald’s – One of the most knock-down best bands you can see live in Houston.

Wednesday, March 9

Robert Ellis & The Boys, Orgone @ Fitzgerald’s – Robert Ellis…I mean, do I have to explain anything further?

Deadhorse (PA), William James, Lights of Attica @ The Mink – I know I was psyched out at first that this was THE Dead Horse too.

SXSW Overflow Fest, featuring Driftless Pony Club, Only on Tuesdays, & Heresy Theory @ Super Happy Fun Land – SHFL kicks-off its annual SXSW overflow shows tonight.

Rodeo Houston This Week

Thursday, March 3 – Sugarland @ Reliant Stadium / Cody Johnson @ The Hideout
Friday, March 4 – Janet Jackson @ Reliant Stadium / Keith Frank @ The Hideout
Saturday, March 5 – Billy Currington @ Reliant Stadium / Jarrod Birmingham @ The Hideout
