It’s hard to believe what gets sold to the public under the guise of country music today.  So many times I’m wondering if just a pair of boots and a hat is all that the music industry needs for an act to be called country music.  I mean, we are in a world where Taylor Swift was originally sold as a country music artist.  I think that makes you appreciate when a band like Houston’s Grand Old Grizzly actually plays country music.  After being on all sorts of festivals and getting on many of the right shows, this year the band dropped the beautifully crafted and honky tonk gem of “Cosmonada.”  On it, the four piece stood with their convictions and kept the honk behind the tonk, while adding plenty of hooks and keeping things fresh.

One of the things that stood out to me about the album, is that there are more than enough tracks that are strong enough to become singles or videos.  One of the strongest, “Travelin’,” keeps all of the country elements that the band has become known for while adding a really pretty and catchy chorus.  So, when the band hit FPH up about debuting a video for the song, we were more than thrilled to offer it up.

The video, found here, showcases a mixture of the band performing on the floor at Continental Club and playing live at Fitzgerald’s.  It gives you an idea of what I’m sure a practice from the band versus a live show is like.  There’s also hints of a possible love theme within the video that stays in the background alongside imagery of the band hanging out, while the band’s performance is at the forefront of the footage that clocks in a little under the five minute mark.  All in all, it’s a nice glimpse into a band that plays a mixture of alt country and traditional country, yet does so with well crafted songs and with ease.

A band that writes songs like this makes me proud that they’re from Houston, and that good country music still exists.  If for some strange reason you’ve never seen Grand Old Grizzly perform, then you can catch them this Thursday November 12th at Continental Club.  The 21 & up show gets going around 10:00 and has a TBA cover.
