I´m Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad, and the Beautiful a documentary by Jonathan Demme that delves into the Hurricane Katrina disaster unwinds Sunday night at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Producer Daniel Wolff will introduce the film. Wolff will also sign copies of his book The Fight for Home: How (Parts Of) New Orleans Came Back at the Brazos Book Store (2421 Bissonnet) that afternoon at 2 pm.
From the MFAH press release: “In 2005, Academy Award-winning director Jonathan Demme set out to document the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Katrina and the rebuilding of New Orleans´ Lower Ninth Ward. When he met Carolyn Parker, what began as a historical documentary morphed into a vibrant character study of the courage and resiliency of this fearless matriarch and civil rights activist. I´m Carolyn Parker: The Good, the Mad, and the Beautiful is Demme´s intimate account of Parker´s five-year crusade to rebuild her beloved neon-green house, her church, her community—and her life.”
Kudos to the MFAH for bringing in this film. Perhaps not ironically another current Demme doc on Neil Young has yet to play Houston even though it was screened for reviewers and has had its release date constantly changed on an off. The screening starts at 7 pm. (Film information: 713.639.751)
