FFW – The Free Press Music Preview for June 13 – 20, 2012
This Week’s Featured Show
Saturday June 16
w/ Soular Grooves
Samba Soul, Havikoro H.I.S.D.
Funky, Jazzy, and Politically prickly would be three good ways to describe this 16-year-old instrumental ensemble that has become a Houston institution. If there is an anti-authoritarian protest or some social justice issue in need of a funky backing band, odds are the The Free Radicals are there to help make it all a little more bootie shaking and certainly a lot more fun. (People who find drum circles annoying couldn’t be any more grateful. ) Their regular gigs at Avant Garden are something everyone should try to catch at least once and their albums do a great job of capturing the energy of their live shows. This Saturday they bring you a new one and we couldn’t be more excited.
A little funny sideline about the album involves the HPMAs. Now head honcho, Nick Cooper isn’t above a little shameless pimping of his stuff either and so he’s pitching for folks to vote for this album as Album of the year in the Houston Press Music Awards even though the album comes out a few days after the nomination window closes. How does he do this? By effectively pre-releasing it on-line to squeeze into the deadline. Well, ya gotta admire his gumption. Anyhow, here is his pitch:
Not only is Free Radicals asking you to nominate us for “Best Jazz” but also to nominate our new CD “The Freedom Fence” for best CD, and you can nominate “Ben Taub Blues” for best song if you like that one This is a weird request because the CD comes out two days after the nominations end on June 14th, but what else are we supposed to do, try to get it nominated next year when it is a year old? Dang! You don’t have to take our word for it. Here are some new songs and videos here for you to check out to confirm that this CD is definitely the best! Check these samples out:

Cruxiter, Tailgunner, Valgud, Mhinotahn, Black Hole Caravan, Bag of Tricks, Seal The Abyss @ The White Swan – C’mon guys. Cruxiter? I mean you’re a pretty good old school metal band from Austin but Cruxiter?
Bald Eagle Burger, Ken Jones’ Subpoena, The Anarchitex @ Super Happy Fun Land – For people who think that punk is merely pop-punk or hardcore, consider the Anarchitex, a local band of old school veterans that show that there is a lot more to punk.
A Special Benefit Show for Nancy Moynihan, featuring Raging Apathy & Hounds of Jezebel @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) – I can’t seem to find details on the reason for the benefit but I do love that it’s a benefit featuring a band called raging apathy.

BOARS, Unmothered, Sleeping Ancient, From Beyond @ Mango’s – Some heavy bidness metal from Austin.
TV Girl @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) - indie pop duo from San Diego with a nice mixtape but I dunno how well it would work live.
Monday, June 18
Page CXVI @ Fitzgerald’s – Kind of intriguing duo here who takes hymns and tries to make them accessible. Most definitely unusual stuff to hear outside of church but kind of neat.
Tuesday, June 19
The Cult, Against Me!, The Icarus Line @ House of Blues – Some bands should just let it go. The Cult did one decent (if dated) album where they knocked off AC/DC riffs. They should have let it go after that.
Dr. Ralph Stanley @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) – Bad ass Bluegrass dude comes to town and well worth the trip to the Woodlands.
Wednesday, June 20
Scale The Summit @ Fitzgerald’s – Instrumental Prog Metal, not something we see a lot of around these parts but these guys really kick some serious ass when they put their minds to it but then of course, I also like Rush, so you can take that with a grain of salt.
Severance, Parental Advisory, Funeral Rites @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) – I think this is the McCallen TX metal band.
Commie Hilfiger vs. Capitalist Kids, The Sellouts, Black Tuesday @ Fitzgerald’s – Political science/ Economics students take note, it’s Marx Rock vs Smith Rock settling once and for all which system is best.
Possessed By Paul James, Delaney Davidson @ Rudyard’s - solid Austin folkie
