This Week’s Featured Show

Friday April, 20

Marcel Khalife & Al-Mayadine Ensemble
@ Jones Hall

There is a hell of a lot of music coming in from all parts of the world this week with the International Festival and even a Flamenco Festival yet I gotta give this week to singer, composer, and oud player Marcel Khalife.  First off the Oud is a cool-ass instrument.  Second, the dude has had to put up with foolish opposition to his art from facing criminal prosecution from religious extremists to being banned in Tunisia for his support of political activists. But none of that would matter if the dude couldn’t write some damn good tunes to back it up and Khalife has been doing that for 30 years.  So how could we not give him a thumbs up at the home office?

Plus, dude, Omar here is so psyched about this show that his skull cracked open and a rainbow shot out, showering cookies and ice cream on passers by!  You know how awesome that is?  Free Cookies and Ice Cream!  Here is how Omar described Khalife in a recent interview; “Most artists offer commentary on the world that surrounds them as a spectator. They are mirrors of their environment yet abstain from jumping head first into participation. However, there is a rare few artists who both serve as a mouthpiece for their environment and actually perform as active participants in their world. Few embody this direct engagement like world-renowned Lebanese artist Marcel Khalife.  His powerful song craft has captured more than 3 decades of joy and turmoil in the world’s most delicately complex region and he has done so at his own personal risk.”  If you missed it, you can read the interview here (link).

Thursday, April 19

Curren$y, Smoke DZA, Fiend 4 Da Money, Corner Boy P, Trademark, Young Roddy @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - OK I’m over the “$” being used as an “S” – everyone please stop this now!

Collin Raye, Imaj Thomas @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) -Pop Country balladeer (ewwww)

Friday, April 20

Melvins, Unsane @ Warehouse Live (Studio) -Oh crap speaking of skulls cracking open!!!  The Melvins are playing!!! The Melvins are playing!!!

Mustard Plug, Left Alone @ Fitzgerald’s - Ska Punk guys from Michigan with a really gross name.

Sight, Sound, Space, featuring Charlie Ebersbaker, Paul Connolly, Jonathan Jindra, Steve Jansen, John Pitale, & Baltazar Canales @ The Temple (2300 McKinney, 4th Floor; 8-11PM) -Imagine a carpeted room where you lie down in the middle while a band of improvisers play quiet, improvised ambient music for you to chill out to.  that is what this is.

The Ting Tings, MNDR @ Fitzgerald’s - Cute UK pop band

The Invincible Czars, Glass the Sky, Young Girls @ Rudyard’s -The always entertaining Austin instrumental ensemble returns.

The Boxing Lesson, Jealous Creatures, PuraPharm, Residual Kid @ Mango’s -The publicist describes Austin’s TBL as a “psychedelic space rock band” so I’m thinking Hawkwind or Spacemen 3 or SubArachnoid Space or something like that but, yeah… this I kind of just cringed when the vocalist tried a bit too hard.

House Of Creeps Benefit Show with New York City Queens, Square and Compass, Deep Cuts, Lisa’s Sons, Feather Face. Last 2 Weeks, Sunrise and Ammunition @ House of Creeps - Fundraiser for new PA.

Disfrutalo!, InZurgo, Handsomebeast, Fuska, Bayuco Social, Mad Joy, Zoofelia, Cassette Tape, Downer, Meta The Man, PAPAYA @ Super Happy Fun Land - Groovy Psychedelic kids from Pasadena head this line up.

Garbage @ House of Blues - Garbage was  ranked, #60 on VH1s “100 Sexiest Artists”  My reaction to this was  “I’m so glad people are over the whole list thing” and “Is VH1 still around and if so who cares?”

Eilen Jewell @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Boise, Idaho’s folk/country “queen fo the minor key” returns.

Kevin Higgins @ Heights Live! -(mock surprise) A singer songwriter from Austin?  Noooooooo!

T-Lady @ Jet Lounge - Any rapper who drops lyrics about gumbo is OK in my book

Cory Morrow @ Sam Houston Race Park - Houston expat now living in Austin doing the singer songwriter thing.

Seth Walker @ Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe (Galveston) - Though he was originally from Austin, this rootsy, bluesy musician now calls from Nashville home.

Ted Nugent @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) -I will give him “Stranglehold” with the Amboy Dukes but outside of that one track, if you want to know why I abhor 70s arena rock,  look no further than this man’s 70’s music catalog.  “Cat Scratch Fever” and “Wango Tango” alone have to be some of the most dull and lazy rock songs ever committed to vinyl.  Oh and this just in from the Atlantic Magazine’s Blog; Nugent was quoted as saying at a St. Luis NRA Convention, “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will be either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”  Oh God, really Ted? Do you promise?  OK, April of 2013 it is, don’t let me down, Ted.

Putrid Pile, Ingurgitate, Beaten and Butchered, Diminished, Sadistic Butchering, Human Chunks @ Walter’s - Here is a challenge for all you readers out there.  Take all the metal band listings for the rest of the year, then write a poem or prose piece using all the band names.  Get to work!  I’m serious!

DevilDriver, The Faceless, Dying Fetus, Job For A Cowboy, 3 Inches of Blood, Impending Doom, Wretched @ House of Blues - OK let me make a modification to that challenge.  You can only use Metal bands that play smaller venues.  Sorry but Job for a Cowboy is really not that good a metal name.

Project Grimm, From Beyond @ Rudyard’s -Cranky McCrankster guitarist John Cramer (of the Mike Gunn) heads Project Grimm and the ever heavy From Beyond open.

Kristy Lee @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - American Idol fans (do people still watch this show?) likely know Lee who placed 7th on the show one season.

Mark Halata & Texavia @ The Continental Club (3-6PM) - OK let’s get this out of the way right now – Polka is bad ass, Polka with a Tuba player in the band is even more bad ass.  No arguments.

Tuesday, April 24
