FFW – The Free Press Music Preview for September 20 – 26, 2012

Nameless Sound & Aurora Picture Show present
Text of Light, featuring Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, Ulrich Krieger, & Tim Barnes
@ Barnevelder Movement (7:30PM)
It’s not everyday someone gets up and says, “You know what? I should put together a group to play improvisational music to the non-narrative cinema of Stan Brakhage and other avant-garde filmmakers!” But that’s what Lee Renaldo of Sonic Youth and his cohorts did and the result is Text of Light. As a person who plinks on the six string, this one kills me because I will be out of town this weekend and Lee Renaldo and Alan Licht are two dudes whose work I have always looked up to and this is a rare opportunity to see them do their improv thing in Houston. I can’t think of a better way for Nameless Sound to kick off it’s season and kudos as well to Aurora Picture show who is co-presenting this as part of their 9th annual Media Archaeology Festival. Here is a sample of what to expect:
Thursday, September 20
Rise Against, The Gaslight Anthem, Hot Water Music @ Bayou Music Center - Chicago Punk’s playing the decidedly not punk Bayou Center.
OFF!, Negative Approach, Power Trip @ Warehouse Live (Studio) -Off! isn’t just a bug spray, it’s also an amalgamation of members of bands such as Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Redd Kross, Burning Brides, Rocket from the Crypt, and others delivering no-holds-barred hardcore punk.
Thursday Concerts at Discovery Green, featuring Grandfather Child & Folk Family Revival @ Discovery Green (6PM; free!) - Smoothest effin’ band in the Bayou City!
CoogRadio One Year Anniversary Show, featuring Female Demand, FLCON FCKER, Josiah Gabriel, The Roosevelt House Band, & Agent Ribbons @ Mango’s (free!) -The University Of Houston’s answer to KTRU celebrates its first year. Sadly, it’s Internet only so you will have to wait to hear it when you get near a Wi-fi signal. Which coincidentally is about what you need to hear KUHF’s classical station. Has anyone tuned into 91.7fm lately to hear it? I was always able to hear 91.7fm when Rice owned it and now, if I try to tune-in, I get squat from the University of Houston. No matter where I am in the effin city, I can never pick up the station. I hope that makes it perfectly clear that, from the UH side, the buyout of KTRU was not about the classical fans in any way, shape, or form but really about dumping a less profitable genre. Classy.
Darrin Love, Elaine Greer and Friends, Without a Face @ Fitzgerald’s - local singer songwriter teams up with ex-pat singer-songwriter Greer and her pals

Fiona Apple @ Bayou Music Center - Did you grab Apple’s latest release? I got it months ago and it’s crazy good. Just sayin’.
Tiziano Dominico, Featherface, Deep Cuts @ Rudyard’s -Dunno much about Deep Cuts but Domenico and Featherface are definitely worth checking out.
Heart Chamber Orchestra @ Barnevelder Movement, Arts Complex -attention fans of Two Star Symphony, members of 2 star are in HCO. But I’ll let Michael Bergeron explain this one as he already did a nice preview of this here: http://www.freepresshouston.com/film/semiconductor-heart-chamber-orchestra/
MFAH Mixed Media: Designed by IKEA, featuring Drop the Lime, Ceeplus Bad Knives, Damon Allen, & Reverberation DJs @ MFAH (1001 Bissonnet; 8PM-12AM) – I have to say I’m not that thrilled with this week’s Mixed Media offering which features Drop the Lime, a DJ/ electronic producer who’s take on Rockabilly is nothing short of pedestrian.
The Psychedelic Furs @ House of Blues –They may be olds now but the P-furs made some great music back in the day.
Chase Hamblin & The Roustabouts, Kevin Kendrick, Nathan Quick, George Mitchell Trio @ Warehouse Live (Green Room) – Houston’s favorite the 60’s psychedelic worshiper.

The Menil Collection 25th Birthday, featuring Kashmere Reunion Stage Band & TSU Jazz Ensemble @ The Menil Collection (1533 Sul Ross; 3PM) -The new Fitz is just a wee baby compared to the Menil and accordingly they are celebrating in style.
Bela Fleck @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) - Banjo wielding mother….I’m just talkin’ ’bout Bela.

Fitzgerald’s 2ndGrandReopening Anniversary Weekend, featuring Fishbone, Los Skarnales, American Fangs, Mac Demarco @ Fitzgerald’s – The last day of the three day celebration is the biggest of the three. Expect to go to work very, very, very sleepy and hungover on Monday.
Pretty Lights @ Bayou Music Center -that electronic music dude from Colorado returns
Monday, September 24
Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, Larry and His Flask, Jenny Owen Youngs @ Fitzgerald’s -Hey so maybe Fitz isn’t as big as playing for 80,000 people at the opening of the summer Olympics but I’m sure that won’t be an issue for Mr. Turner
The Go-Go’s @ House of Blues - One of the all time classic girl groups returns.
Tuesday, September 25
