FFW – The Free Press Music Preview for July 5 – July 11, 2012
This Week’s Featured Show(s)
Fat Tony & Tom Cruz (mixtape release)
DJ iPod Ammo
@ Warehouse Live (Green Room)
Friday, July 6
The crazy music release shows just keep comin’, this time we have two great ones on the same night because the forces of the universe are against you. Maybe if you put your mind to it you can somehow manage to to do that thing electrons do but on a larger scale and be at both places at once but I doubt it. So, fate will make it so that you’re just going to decide between the awesomeness of Fat Tony and the awesomeness of Young Mammals and I’m telling you that’s such a hard call that I’m almost glad that my schedule is such that I can’t get out on Friday nights because my head would do that Star Trek robot thing where smoke starts coming from my neck and my head would explode when given some paradox. So you guys are on your own on figuring which one to attend.
Thursday, July 5
Robert Ellis @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck- I am still shocked and stunned that the public didn’t vote to nominate Ellis in the best guitarist category for the Houston Press Music Awards. Open nominations suck.
Benjamin Wesley, Bernal-Sherrill, Lacy Rose @ Notsuoh - If there was a category for “Best I can play any fucking intrument you throw at me and I will play it better than you can award,” Ben Wesley would be an easy winner.
And So I Watch You From Afar, Zechs Marquise, Zorch @ Fitzgerald’s – Oh there is some good instrumental action here from these Belfast folks too bad the camera operator is too drunk to hold the camera still in their videos.
Chase Hamblin Band, Nathan Quick @ Avant Garden – By now if you haven’t caught the poppy psychedelia of Hamblin, you really need to get with it.
Morgue City, After Party, Dead Man’s Ransom @ Rudyard’s – Man Spike and Raul sure are playing out a lot as of late.
Bulletboys, Faster Pussycat @ The Concert Pub North (2470 FM 1960) – Even by Hair Metal Standards, these bands sucked.
Crazy and The Brains, The Disconnects @ The White Swan – Awfully cute poppy indie rock you can sing along to. I’m honestly kind of shocked to see a non hardcore show at TWS.
Butch Hancock @ Anderson Fair – Alone or as a member of the Flatlander, Hancock is someone every Texan should see once.
Elle Acoustique featuring Sarah Golden, Victoria Love, Connor Zswetch, Will Golden@ House of Blues (Foundation Room) – A series meant to highlight women in music but I don’t even know what "The Voice" is. I assume it’s some kind of TV show but I’m too lazy to look it up. But if you do know what it is, Golden and Zswetch both appeared on it.
Eric Benét, Ledisi @ Arena Theater – Get your R&B on, yo.
Friday, July 6
The Eastern Sea, New York City Queens, Vox and the Hound @ Mango’s - I feel really bad here because The Eastern Sea are a great band and I really would have liked to have done a nice preview of this show – an interview or something – but vacation and tour stuff kind of kept me busy. Sorry guys. But you guys should try to swing by here ot at their show at Cactus. Here they are so cool, they will show you how to brew beer.
Brown Whornet, Lick Lick, Muzak John, Re:Action, Nonsense Music Band @ Super Happy Fun Land - Super awesome weirdness for Austin X2.
Ready Rocksteady!, featuring The Suffers, The Bandulus, & DJ Moonstomp @ Rudyard’s - The Ska, Reggae, etc. super group is a must see.
Kirk Whalum, Kevin Whalum, Nicole Henry @ Miller Outdoor Theatre (free!) - Smoove Jazz on the hill.
Come See My Dead Person @ Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe (Galveston) - Rowdy Irish rock for the island
Saturday, July 7
Nava’s Beardy B-Day Bash, featuring the last place you look, Nothingmore, & Recovery Room @ Warehouse Live (Studio) – thelastplaceyoulook lead singer celebrates his birthday.
Winter Wallace, Knights of the Fire Kingdom, Frants @ Fitzgerald’s – pleasant and mostly harmless. Winter Wallace that is. The Knights are pretty dangerous rock and roll.
Southern Backtones @ Time Out #1 (10928 Fuqua) – Attn SB fans.
MC Homeless, J E double F, Greenlander, Babelfishh @ East Side Social Center (4202 Canal) - Cleveland Hip Hop in the East End.
Mammoth Grinder, War Master, Turbokrieg, Wasted Saviour, Ass @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - Sweet, brutal metal from Austin.
[wp_bandcamp_player type=”album” id=”1565422796″ size=”grande” bg_color=”#FFFFFF” link_color=”#4285BB”]
Blaggards, The Clarkes, Brad Boyer & Country Store Buffalo @ The Continental Club – The Blaggards and Come See My Dead Person should really have a battle to the death.
Keyshia Cole, Luke James @ Arena Theater - Hip-Hop soul princess and former reality TV star hits the round
Dan Sartain, Teenage Bedroom @ Fitzgerald’s – FYI due to a family emergency, Sartian had to cancel his tour.
Underworld, featuring DJ Mina & DJ vvJames @ Numbers - Thar be DJs
Sunday, July 8
FLCON FCKER, Treasure Mammal @ Mango’s – FF showed me a live video where his gear crashed to the floor. It still pained him to watch it but if you are a bad ass like he is, you can afford to laugh a little bit at your misfortune.
Crimson ProjeKct, Adrian Belew Power Trio, Stickmen (feat. Tony Levin & Pat Mastelotto) @ Warehouse Live – I’m not sure how to feel about this. I love Belew and Levin but I’m not sure I want to see them rehash past KC glory though on the other hand Belew’s solo work is horribly spotty.
Glen Campbell @ The Grand 1894 Opera House (Galveston) - The Rhinestone cowboy returns and I’m sure he will bsinging this one
Monday, July 9
War of Ages, Onward to Olympas, The Overseer, Leaders, Letter to the Exiles @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Christian Metal because you know Jesus probably could shred if they made BC Rich guitars back in his day.
Tuesday, July 10
Ydinphere, Haistelijat, H.R.A., Turbokrieg, Peasant @ Walter’s – Helsinki kids doiong it old school hardcore punk style
White Crime, No Reply, Spastic Fit, Serenghetto @ Mango’s - While in the Montrose White Crime does the hardcore punk thing Houston style.
Wednesday, July 11
Rockstar Mayhem Festival, featuring Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, As I Lay Dying, Whitechapel, & High on Fire @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion - Just the word “Slayer” should be enough for you.
