FFW – The Free Press Preview for March 01 – 07, 2012
This Week’s Featured Show
B L A C K I E
Oh Shit! We are pushing close to one decade of bad grammar, sloppy typos, and atrocious spelling! YeahYUSSSSS!!!!! And what better way to celebrate than to feature poet Saul Williams. Yes, that’s right, bask in the irony of that for a minute! Here is a guy whose skills with words have led him beyond the realm of poetry and into the world of film and music. Yeah, he’s a Renaissance bad-ass no doubt while our rudimentary language skills here merely have the power to make elementary school teachers cringe. OK but enough self-deprecating humor. Honestly, thanks to you readers for your support and thanks to the great bands, artists, and collection of weirdos out there who make my job easier. This should be a lot of fun and we have a great line-up. So come on out and celebrate with us.
Now for the rest of the week. (Note that we added separate sections at the end for in-stores, record releases, and the Rodeo. )
Thursday, March 1
Fotofest 2012 Biennial, featuring Tatsuya Nakatani, Astrogenic Hallucinauting, Thomas Helton, & Dave Dove @ Super Happy Fun Land - This should be a phenomenal show. Percussion fans should get a kick out of Japan’s Nakatani as well as AH, and Jazz fans will get a kick out of bassist Helton and Trombonies Dove.
Tity Boi/2 Chainz/Paul Wall/Propain/MC Kane/DJ Young Samm @ Warehouse Live - one half of the Playaz Circle leads this night of hip-hop.
The Ghost Wolves @ The Continental Club - Austin Texas Blues inspired Rock
Sweet Colleens/Brizeus @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - fiddles and accordions, accordions and fiddles
Vagabond Swing @ Mango’s - These Louisiana guys were at Rudz but she show moved to Mango’s. FYI.
Friday, March 2
Megadeth, Mötörhead, Lacuna Coil, Volbeat @ Verizon Wireless Theater - Conservatives can rock too, as Dave Mustane clearly shows. Also on the bill is the unstoppable Lemmy Killmeister driven Motorhead.
29-95.com Presents, featuring Danneurysm (Nirvana tribute), The Energy, Muhammad Ali, & Picture Book @ The Continental Club - Wait, is the Kinks lovin’ Picture Book doing Nirvana too? Now that I’d like to see.
The 5 With 1, featuring Mantis, K-Rino, The Niceguys, Franchise & Yung, Lee Lonn, Nathan Quick, DJ Charlee Brown, Cory Wilson, Twenty Eleven, & Thurogood Wordsmith @ Villains - Hey ummm Villains, you may want to update your website. Just sayin’
Big Head Todd and The Monsters/Drag the River @ House of Blues - Never got into this band but a lot of people did, so I figured I’d mention it.
Bare Wires/Mikey & The Drags/Purple/Gutterworld/Guilt Party/Jim and the Toms @ Nak Productions (4121 Bartlett) - California Garge Pop dudes return.
William Fitzsimmons/Noah Gundersen @ Fitzgerald’s - Though he’s a sensitive/whispery singer-songwriter Fitzsimmons has a beard that would kill.
Susanne Abbott @ Heights Live! ($12) - Houston Expat singer songwriter who now lives in Austin.
Jimmy LaFave @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck - Man, we have a lot of singer songwriters this Friday, aren’t there?
Saturday, March 3
Radiohead/Other Lives @ Toyota Center (sold out!) - What part of Sold Out do you not understand?!
Cop Warmth/The Riffs/Dada Moda/Garbage Dump @ Mango’s - Oh don’t get me start6ed on the Noise Ordinance and the endless harassment of venues like Mango’s… Just go and support these folks, OK?
Shearwater/Marmalakes/Dana Falconberry @ Fitzgerald’s - Overkill River’s Will Sheff’s other band. Kind of similar territory as The Mountain Goats and Frightened Rabbit.
Flogging Molly/Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears/The Devil Makes Three @ House of Blues - Sure Celtic Punkers Flogging Molly is headlining but BJL is much more fun.
First Saturday Arts Market, featuring Westbound @ 548 W. 19th St. (11AM-6PM) - country folks Westbound at the Height’s art market.
Jetspeed Music Showcase, featuring Savage Evolution, IDR, South, Brompton, Blackout X, & Sea of Wolves @ Warehouse Live (Studio) - Ever click on a promoter’s website and there is something strikes you as iffy? Jetspeed is one of those. Maybe it’s the bad phtoshop skills, the jack -of-all-trades management (Models, DJ, Party Bands), or maybe it’s the vague wording they use under “National Acts” thatseems off. Normally, if you click National Acts you’d expect to see who they manage or maybe who they have booked but there is no roster of artists listed yet they say they have “worked with” (note they don’t say the managed or booked) “Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Santana and Andy Vargas, Prince, Ice Cube, Hank III, Extreme, Tracy Lawrence, Kevin Fowler, Pat Green, Blue October, Tone Loc and Coolio.” Now, call me crazy but if you worked with those acts on a meaningful level, wouldn’t you brag about what you did for them to bring in business?
‘Poke-Bass @ Super Happy Fun Land - lots and lots and lots of DJs.
Hank Schyma/Craig Kinsey @ Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe (Galveston) - Mr. Southern Backtones and Sideshow Tramps’ Reverend hit the island.
Klassical Kids @ The Clarion (Brazosport College campus; Lake Jackson) - I guess it’s kids playin’ classical unless Klassical is some new subgenre of Death Metal.
Sunday, March 4
Frankenstein Brothers (Buckethead & That 1 Guy) @ Warehouse Live - For me,d’s - Cool Midwest psychedelia inspired band.
The Casualties/Toxic Holocaust/Legion @ Walter’s (1120 Naylor) - New York Street Punks
Monday, March 5
They Who Sound featuring Forbes Graham, Bryan Eubanks, Chris Cogburn, David Dove @ Avant Garden - Boston trumpet player Forbes Graham easily wins the award for coolest looking promo shot (I mean, look at that!) Hell, it’s so cool that, had it not been our Birthday week, I’d have given this one the Featured Show spot just on the pic alone. But awesome pics aside, the music will be most definitely worth your time.
The Underhill Family Orchestra @ Super Happy Fun Land - Indie Folk ensemble from Mobile, AL.
Wednesday, March 7
Leslie and The Lys/Pennyhawk/Ramona and the Swimsuits @ Fitzgerald’s - I find the headliner less funny than annoying but maybe that’s the idea.
The Great Sabatini @ Super Happy Fun Land - Some good metal shit coming down from the Great White North.
