FFW – The Free Press Preview for December 15 – 21, 2011
This Week’s Featured Show
Alicia Plaza & Joe Ortiz
featuring Muhammad Ali
Giant Battle Monster
@ Super Happy Fun Land ($5)
Joe Ortiz. You may know him as the man with a message, “Hug Me.” If you attended summerfest or the now retired Block Party, you likely saw Joe walking around with a hand written sign saying just that. The funny thing is he would walk from person to person giving a receiving hugs and it wasn’t creeper at all but just the perfect walking personification of all the good vibes of those events. If you missed out on that, maybe you know him for his modesty-challenged band Clockpole who, besides putting on a fun show, are best known for being a bunch of pasty guys playing their instruments naked. I have to admit, the first time I saw them, I was like, “Ewww no thank you Joe, I don’t need to see that.” But soon after I was just kind of “Oh it’s just Clockpole” and was more shocked anytime they kept their clothes on.
Anyhow, perhaps we’re corny here at the FPH but we’re all just a little “awwwwwwww” about the union of Joe and Alicia. Oooooh, they are just so cute you could punch them and you too can share in the fairy tale romance with a rock and roll matrimony at Super Happy Funland. Not only will the aforementioned Clockpole play but fellow islanders Darwin’s Finches will be there along with Giant Battle Monster, Muhammadali, The Annoysters, Cop Warmth, and Papaya. Plus Peter Lee will be Barbecuing and there will be a big pot luck dinner. I for one think that is superawesomecool. Just bring a barf bag cause it’s just that adorable.
Congratulations Joe and Alicia.
Much love and best wishes to two very good people.
Thursday, December 15
Man Or Astroman, The Flaming Hellcats @ Fitzgeralds – Holey moley. At nearly 20 years in their deep space mission, MOA has surely logged in enough surf riffs to make and old school Star Trek robot smoke and collapse.

Christmas in the South, featuring Charlie Daniels, Trapper Joe & Trigger Tommy, & The Swamp People @ Nutty Jerry’s (Winnie) – Charlie Daniels is like that cranky old relative who sits at the dinner table and goes on about how “Darwinism will be looked upon as we now look upon the flat earth theory” and how he’s more afraid of Harry Reid and their ilk than he is of the terrorists. But you can’t deny the devil Went Down To Georgia is a classic tune.
Saturday, December 17
Jandek @ Menil Collection (ATTENTION: due to inclement weather the time is now 7PM and this will be held indoors in the foyer) this was a close call as this week’s featured show but just missed by thaaat much. Jandek’s “outsider” music was already divisive amongst music fans but a few years back he famously flicked his finger at pretension and played a fun and goofy funk jam at Rudyard’s that left music nerds around the world so furious and hurt that you’d have thought he’d killed their mom in cold blood. But leave your dancing shoes home this week because this weekend’s show will no doubt return to more familiar territory. The Menil Collection will present a two-part program of live and recorded Outsider Music in conjunction with the current museum exhibition Seeing Stars: Visionary Drawing From the Collection. The first part actually begins earlier when, preceding Jandek’s performance, at 4 pm, Houston record collector Jeff Williams will be in the exhibition gallery playing selections from his extensive library of recorded visionary and outsider music. That will be followed at 7:15pm by a solo performance by Jandek.

Carolyn Wonderland @ Dosey Doe Coffee Company (The Woodlands) – Houston (now Austin) blues guitar wiz Carolyn Wonderland returns to her hometown. Well just north of it at least.
Sunday, December 18
