FFW – The Free Press Music Preview for October 11 – 17, 2012
This Week’s Featured Show
Houston can often feel like a farm team where some of our brightest talents eventually leave for the big leagues and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Jana Hunter is just one of those talents. While it’s been years since she left Houston for Baltimore, her homecomings are always met with great enthusiasm and with good reason; her work in Matty and Mossy, as a solo performer, and now with her group Lower Dens has tracked a particular narrative that is sometimes haunting and other times lighthearted but always melodic and memorable. This week she and her posse return joined by the always scrappy Wicked Poseur and newcomers Bed Moves. If Bed Moves doesn’t ring a bell their pedigree might. With members of //TENSE//, sIngs, and Balaclavas, this should be an opener you won’t want to miss.
Thursday, October 11
The Zoobombs, Karma Points @ Super Happy Fun Land –No offense intended to anyone else playing this evening (well in the case of Gotye, maybe) but I’m telling you right now, this is going to be the shit! I am so pissed this is tonight because these guys from Japan look fucking bad ass!
Gotye, Givers, Jonti @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion –It was pretty hard to escape Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” this year and now the Belgian-Australian international sensation drops into the CWMP. Did I mention that there is a bad ass Japanese band that would be much better use of your money?
Featherface, Colorfeels, Without A Face @ The Continental Club – The local indie rockers drop in on the Main St. institution
Freelance Whales, Geographer @ Fitzgerald’s –We interviewed Judah Dadone of the charming Queens based Freelance Whales last time they came to town (link). Here’s a little spot they did for NPR
The Vibrators, Weird Party, Prison Love and The Lifers, The CEO’s @ Walter’s – Classic London punks that go back to the 70s but only with drummer Eddie Edwards remaining of the original line-up. Here is that original line-up in 1978
Thursday Concerts at Discovery Green, featuring Dale Watson & The Carper Family @ Discovery Green (6PM; free!) – Did you know there were country music awards in the Netherlands, Britain, and Spain? Yup, it’s true and this Austin based star who grew up in poverty in Pasadena has won.
River City Extension, Brent Nettles, Eli @ Mango’s ($8) – Nice folk rock ensemble from Jersey supporting their sophomore album.
Bike Night, featuring Black Queen Speaks @ Mancuso Central (535 North Loop) – Nope, that’s not a new venue that’s a Harley dealership!
Bombay Bicycle Club, Tiger Waves @ Fitzgerald’s – Pleasant enough indie poppers from London
alt-J, Grouplove @ House of Blues – Thank goodness this English indie pop band is kind enough to give us the Mac shortcut for ∆.
Trampled By Turtles, Honey Honey @ House of Blues (Bronze Peacock Room) –Squidbillies approved bluegrass
Michael Schenker @ The Concert Pub North (2470 FM 1960) –If you remember Schenker in Scorpions or UFO, you are likely very very old.
Dennis DeYoung @ Stafford Centre (Stafford) –Speaking of old acts, the former Styx man behind Mr. Roboto is in town.
Accept, Fallacy, Bagheera, Saxon King @ The Scout Bar (Clear Lake) –Geez, yet another old band but this time it’s an Udo-less Accept.
Friday, October 12
Stars, California Wives, Diamond Rings @ Fitzgerald’s – the Canadian band Stars’ “Your Ex-Lover is Dead” is still a lovely tune, I only wish I found the rest of their catalog as engaging.
Andrew Bird, Here We Go Magic @ House of Blues – The violin wielding indie popper returns
Moon Duo, Hamamatsu Tom @ Rudyard’s – Fans of Wooden Shijps take note this is guitarist Ripley Johnson’s trippy side project.
Fat Tony (DJ set) @ MKT Bar (1001 Austin) –Tony drops back into town to spin some records! Yeayuss!
IWrestledABearOnce, Oceano, Vanna, Within the Ruins, The Plot in You, Surrounded by Monsters @ Warehouse Live (Studio)- Screamy metal band who get points on having a woman on vocal duties.
Gareth Emery @ Stereo Live – English EMD dude
Tennis, Wild Belle @ Fitzgerald’s – Yeah, there are some great indie pop guy-girl duos out there – Tennis is not one of them.
Fallen Empire, Bestemmia Aeternalis, Avaris, Agony Within @ White Swan Live – I can assume that this is metal but apparently I can find at least three Fallen Empires on line so which one this is that’s anyone’s guess
It’s a Trap, featuring Mayhem, DJ Pharmer, & Nekkid @ 5th Amendment (2900 Travis) – no, not Mayhem the black metal band, Mayhem the Atlanta DJ/producer.
Kenny Rogers @ Arena Theater – I never found Adam Corolla to be particularly funny but his and Norm McDonald’s break down of “Coward of The County” is a gut busting classic.
Alien Ant Farm @ Scout Bar (Clear Lake) – long time alt rock act
Saturday, October 13
Co-Pilot, Alaskan, Odessa, Omotai, Knights of the Fire Kingdom @ Houston House of Creeps – Co Pilot and Alaskan kick off their tour. Check out our interview with Co_Pilot’s Brandon Lemons here (link).
NO, The Jealous Sound, Daytrader @ Fitzgerald’s – And the winner for most idiotic band description goes to NO. Check it! “NO began as a response to the limiting idea behind the word – in an effort to reclaim it and reinterpret it as more than just an antithesis to possibility.” Jeeeez! Really? Could your write any more of a pompous, vaccuous description of your band?
A Night at Market Square, featuring Henry + the Invisibles & Royal Teeth @ Market Square Park – Mostly harmless
Datsik, Terravita, XKR, Getter @ Stereo Live –Canadian Dubstep
Mac Miller, Travis Porter, YG @ Bayou Music Center – Philly Rapper
Lil’ Scrappy @ Warehouse Live –The Head Bussin’, Scooby-Doo lovin’ Atlanta rapper
Sunday, October 14
The Skatalites, The Toasters, The Failed Attempt, LA Skandaloza, Eagger @ Mango’s – Ska Ska Ska
Mono, Chris Brokaw @ Fitzgerald’s –Japan post rockers along with Brokaw (ex-Codeine/Come) should prove to be a shoegazers wet dream.
Gardens & Villa @ Rudyard’s – Like so many acts this week, these Santa Barbara indie rockers are making a pit stop here thanks to ACL.
The Red Elvises @ McGonigel’s Mucky Duck – bring on the balalaikas!
Tony Lucca, Gabe Dixon @ Fitzgerald’s –Let’s see Mickey Mouse Club, toured with N’Sync, and was second runner up on “The Voice”. I know where I’m NOT gonna be on Sunday!
Monday, October 15
They Who Sound @ Avant Garden – No word yet on who is performing but check back and I’ll update it when I do get word.
Rufus Wainwright, Lucy Wainwright Roche @ Bayou Music Center – singer songwriter born of singer songwriters.
Metric, Half Moon Run @ House of Blues – Canadian New Wavers
Tuesday, October 16
RZA @ Warehouse Live (Studio) – OH My God, is everyone out there as excited as I am about the November 2nd release of The Man with the Iron Fists?
