With all the stress of daily life in the city, it helps to take a moment or two to sit still and breathe. At the beginning of March, the community will draw together for an opportunity to relax and reflect with The Rothko Chapel’s 12 Moments of Spirituality and Healing. The Rothko Chapel is described by Michelle Ashton, Public Programs Director, as, “a tranquil meditative environment inspired by the mural canvases of Russian born American painter, Mark Rothko.” ”This program is part of a larger monthly series for us, which is usually very popular and well attended,” explained Ashton. This month will feature the music meditation of Lisa Harris taking place Wednesday March 6, 2013 at 12:00 p.m.
Every month the Rothko Chapel hosts an event that brings serenity and reminds the community to stop and take it easy. The presenter this month is Lisa Harris, who is a graduate of both the Mannes School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music and is part of the voice faculty at the Humphrey’s School of Musical Theatre. Harris, “will lead a call and response revisiting of traditional Hymns and Spirituals, mixed with silent reflection and communal intoning,” Ashton declared.
“The mission of the Rothko Chapel is to inspire people to action through art and contemplation, to nurture reverence for the highest aspirations of humanity, and to provide a forum for global concerns,” as stated by the mission statement of the Chapel. This event will be held for the spiritual health of the community and attendees should look forward to the relaxing rhythms and intimate reflections of this musical meditation healing.
“I am excited to have music meditation in the Rothko Chapel for the first time…” Ashton stated. The event is free and open to the public; donations are accepted. The series is co-sponsored by Ligmincha Texas Institute, The Jung Center of Houston, M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, and the Rothko Chapel. For more information, please visit the website.
