There are plenty of people like you who waste valuable time and energy talking smack instead of taking action. And do a little research of your own- the Worst of is a yearly list of local's opinions on the state of the city, which should be obvious to the reader. Maybe you missed the WORST CASE OF DIARRHEA entry, which to some may be hard-hitting journalism, but it's actually just another shitty writer's opinion. @Limka- Here’s a grand idea for ya: Instead of coming here and talking shit about a writer who is obviously as passionate about the subject of human trafficking as you are, how about offering to help research the matter and contributing something positive? For it to be included on a Worst-of-the-Year list is not only representative of the Free Press' (and the the author's) passing interest in Houston's major sex trafficking industry, but it ignores the fact that sex trafficking has been going on in Houston for much longer than 2026. It's been going on for years. Worst of Houston in 2026? Sex trafficking on the same list with hamburgers? Is this a trend piece? I'm confused. Not only should this article have been a full-length feature meriting much more space, it also deserved a much more eloquent and serious writer, committed to truly investigating the issues on which she writes. This writer feels interested in this problem in a very surface way, as if sex trafficking were a hot new band or a bar topic she can sound the most informed about until everyone moves on to a new subject or a new trend. She even admits to being interested in sex trafficking in the most surface way, looking for "what's going down" in the Houston Press. She writes at a fifth grade level, her most valuable insight being, "...there is no debating that this shit is just fucked up." Oh really, invaluable journalist with startling insights about contemporary sextrade in our society? Free Press, hire real writers to write your articles. There are plenty of writers graduating from the University of Houston, Rice, and St. Thomas that could string together a first paragraph that would have avoided using "refused" and "forced" over and over, who know the difference between "resolved of all responsibility" (?) and "absolved of all responsibility," and would have devoted at least a month of research (outside of Google) to a worthy subject. Someone who knows how to use the power and beauty of the English language would be a start; a person with enough character to address the issue with respect would be even better. If the goal is to present just that side of the argument it is certainly your right to do it. Just don't try to pass it off as anything other than granting a platform for propagandists. And yes, I am aware that this is what other news outlets do - just don't think you are special somehow. It's certainly true that these views don't get a very wide audience in the U.S. and part of the function of your paper seems to be to provide alternative views. It's part of why I support KPFT, even though I don't think I've ever agreed with a single thing they've ever said on one of their political programs. Just be careful, because it's an fine line to cross between giving people a voice and allowing lunatics and racists to hijack your publication. Right now, you are Houston's Paper of Record for anti-semitic ideology. Jew hating and jew baiting are a pretty old, tired and crappy shtick and you should at least try to be a bit more subtle next time. And don't give me any of that crapola that you already posted about "it's anti-Israel not anti-Jew". I ain't buying it. The "Birthright" tours similarly bring tens of thousands of young Jews from around the world to hear the same story. These groups do not get to meet with any of the many groups, historians, or intellectuals who could present another side of the story: that Israel is a colonial project and apartheid state. These groups do not have the budget and other resources to bring tens of thousands of young people, or hundreds of prominent figures from around the world. Those invoking principles of balance (ie. "both sides do bad things") often fail to take into account the more fundamental imbalances. It is, of course, not only the difference in travel expense budgets that is significant when exploring imbalance. We must also consider the imbalance in civilians killed, children killed, right to legal resources, illegal nukes, access to clean water, ability to leave to travel or emigrate, shock and awe retaliations, etc. The conclusion is inescapable and indistinguishable from our own history in the U.S.: 'separate but equal' is a smokescreen for separate and unequal. Those who use "you're not being balanced" as a criticism of those voicing criticisms of Israel must use the same standard of balance to criticize Israel's disproportionate history of misconduct. I will make sure to add the sentence " Palestinians are bad too. " to any and all things I every write. For example: " I really liked the latest Mikey and the Drags show. Their songcraft is minimal yet striking. It reminds me of why I liked Rock and Roll in the first place. Palestinians are bad too. " Well said Harbeer. IF YOU WERE FAIR AND BALANCED YOU WOULD SAY PALESTINIANS ARE BAD (TOO)...in this article about the mayor\\\'s trip to Israel, bought and paid for by the American Jewish Committee. That\\\'s what \\"objective\\" means. You have to give \\"both\\" sides of the story, even if that means interjecting irrelevant details, even if that means excluding anything that might suggest that there are more than two sides to any given issue. Get it? Carry on.
