Indian author Pankaj Mishra‘s new book, From the Ruins of Empire: The Intellectuals Who Remade Asia, profiles Liang Qichao, Rabindranath Tagore, and Jamal Al-Din Al-Afghani, three men whose writings and political activism helped revive nationalism in China, India, and the Muslim world, setting the stage for today’s rise of the East.
